    Elk at 688 yards with a 243

To me, who close the distance will always be a better hunter than the one who shots from far away. I'm much more impressed by a shot from 50 yrds than 500. Less distance = more fun, more ethics, more respect of the animal. AND more skills. In my opinion.

    My favourite all-arround rifle

Mine is my Sauer 8x68S - hard hitting, flat shooting, easy on the shoulder, can load heavy bullets. Can't ask any better.

Just finished Green Hills of Africa

EH is my favourite ever. A friend, more than a writer. When I was a boy, I've been so involved in reading him, that I collected every first edition translated in Italian. Luckily, wonderfully translated. He has a very unique way to write, that eventually, influenced mine. A true Giant. Green...

What's the next cartridge your looking to add to your collection and what role will it fill?

I'd like to find a mint conditions Sauer 90 in 243, as I already have 3 of that model (I'm a huge fan of the old, West Germany, Sauers). It would be a delicious Roebuck "dedicated" rifle. I would fit it with EAW rings and bases like the others, and possibly with a Zeiss Victory HT 2.5/10 x 50...

    Be Calm

I had two XI bows in the late early 90's. They were good, high tec compounds for the time... It's a shame that they closed, along some others good ones, like High Country, Pearson, Darton, Saco...

    Be Calm

Well, I would say that hunting has become a mental aspect, a personal behaviour of my days, as I'm a hunter not only when I'm out in the wild, but every minute I live my life. I'm a "self made hunter", as no one in my family has ever been. Almost everything I know come from books and articles...

why do people not use premium bullets?

To me, the big issue is that many actually use premium bullet, but aren't able to match them with the game. A ballistic tip IS a premium bullet, but not an Elk bullet! Same way, a .416 TSX is indeed a marvelous premium bullet, but no way a Lion bullet! "Premium" is a very personal concept, and...

Best thermos for cold weather use

Ahhh don't tell me More I age, more I like to carry my trusty old stuff, sometimes even despite of some lack of perfomance. After all, "performance" concept is very yours to define... I'm 50, and I have some lucky items that (it seems to me) "want" coming hunt with me. Safe to say, some objects...

Best thermos for cold weather use

Thank you Hank! It's the "glass lined" one - still works perfectly, and it's a piece of equipment I really love...has been part of many adventures as much as my rifles or boots, or fishing rods. It's really like and old and trusty red/black shirt : classic and functional, and with many stories...

Best thermos for cold weather use

I use Stanley for the good amount of liquid it contains, and it does a very good service - but nothing compares with my 60 years old "Thermos", the best one I have ever had, that is so old and glorious that his brand has been used since then, to name the object itself. It's still a very, very...

Rigby Big Game Vs Heym Express vs Mauser 98

I own a Rigby Big Game in 416, and I can state it's super accurate, smooth, well made, and functional. The wood is gorgeous and the proportions are perfect. It was made by Paul Roberts in London, and to me, it's the perfect DG rifle. I've shot quite a few Winch 70 and CZ, but never an African 98...

What is the craziest lengths you have went to in order to pay for a hunt?

I remember one time, that I was so "lucky" that I was hit (quite badly) by a big motorcycle as I was crossing the street - the Insurance covered the damages, for money enough for the Elk hunt in Montana I was planning / dreaming at time! I was only a boy, young and penniless, but tough and in...

Mammals of the Pleistocene Era, which would you like to hunt and what cartridge would you use?

Always dreamed to hunt Elasmotherium Sibiricum! ...I would try with my 416, hope it would work, as it's the max round I can shot well! Now, Elasmotherium is truly a magnificent beast, has everything and much more...a misteryous, unique, tank size Monster, 5 meters of absolute brutality

    Assembling an Africa Battery

416 ( Rigby / Rem) 375 H&H 8x68 S 270 Winch That's my idea, I like that some pieces - with a bit of "stretching" - can cover the utility of some of the others. This way, given a malfunction or maintenance of a piece, there's another one that can easily cover the same base.

2388 fps vs 2641 fps would it make a difference

I would say, depending of the bullet structure, it can be quite remarkable. I wouldn't load a 300 gr / .375 tough bullet @ less than 2450 +/-

    Fishing in Yukon

Yup, sure I'll be focused on my tags, it's an hunting trip far more than a fishing one, totally agree on this. Just, you'll never know... Since as far as I know, the area has plenty of great waters. We'll see I'll take some spoons and spinners, maybe a couple minnows, just in case. Greetings...

    EAW Pivot Mount DIY Install

Couple more advices : 1) apply the epoxy in very small amount, using a little, high quality, flat brush, like you were paint the bottom surface of the bases. Small amount. Once you will tighten the base screws, it will form a nice film, just what you need and want. Let it stay for a day before...

    EAW Pivot Mount DIY Install

I did, and I did it very succesfully many times. It's a very long procedure that requires many passages. Keep in mind that EAW bases are intended to work GLUED to the action, with a very good epoxy. One of the key factors is the following : first, put the bases UNGLUED to the action. Then, set...

Hunting distances- how far is too far?

To me, it would be 350 yrds at a big, non dangerous game like Elk or Moose, 300 at smaller deer withetail size, and far closer to a DG. African DG deserve less than 100, generally speaking. This, with my old fashioned "wood and blue" (but accurate) rifles. I would add that, talking about...
