Two Poaching Suspects Fatally Wounded Following Tourist Sighting

A suspicious man wearing a black shirt armed with what looked like a heavy calibre hunting rifle was spotted by tourists walking in the Kruger National Park (KNP) today (13/01/2016), around the Napi section of the park.

This according to KNP Managing Executive, Glenn Phillips, who confirmed that after at least two sets of visitors informed the authorities about this suspect, a helicopter with the assistance of the K9 Specialised dog unit was deployed to attend to the matter.

He said in the subsequent search by Rangers it appeared that the man was not alone, as he was found with a second suspect in the bush. “As the Rangers ordered the men to surrender they opened fire and a shoot-out ensued with Rangers, in which both suspects were fatally wounded and a high calibre hunting rifle was recovered.”

According to Phillips the matter is now under Police investigation and surveillance of the area is continuing to determine if any animals were killed or if there are more suspects in the vicinity.

Phillips also expressed appreciation for the assistance of the visitors in reporting the matter and encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious individual seen in the Park to the nearest camp or to call the KNP’s emergency numbers on 013 735 0197 or 076 801 9679.

The incredible part of the latest Kruger story is that fact that the Poachers were seen by Tourists.
Tourists are only allowed to run around in Kruger during daylight hours.

How brazen, to be operating in day light to start with, to be seen by a Tourist and then just continue on your merry way.

Glad they were reported and the report was acted upon quickly.

Tourists play a part in Anti Poaching, should have been the headline.

On Mbizi we using small anti-poaching units of not more than 5 in a group, we hand pick them, training them, and focus on night patrols !

Michael do your patrols find a lot of snares in the Mbizi area?

CAustin, there is no snares here, thanks God for that, ivory poachers from Moz is our problem. But after that we putting in smaller groups with non local anti-poaching units, doing night patrols and also putting in a Land Cruiser for the unit we can now cover larger areas and be faster.

One time each 2 weeks they stay out for 3 nights, we keeping a gps tracking device on the unit, and make sure they keep moving all the time.

I'm glade to say that during the last 6 months there was zero poaching on Mbizi, no shots, no tracks, nothing...

Wounded by poachers and left. The young cow was darted and treated.
Who knows if she'll survive.
