Three lions that had caused havoc in Chipinge killing cattle were poisoned at the weekend and their carcases were found on Monday. The lions strayed from the nearby Save Conservancy and had killed hundreds of cattle in areas such as Chibuwe, Masimbe, Gumira, Maronga and Middle Sabi.
Councillor for Ward 20, Councillor Charles Mugidho, said the case was reported to the Department of Parks and Wildlife and the police.
“On Monday, Muchaiyana villagers discovered three lion carcases at their farms. We believe that they were poisoned on Sunday night by disgruntled villagers who had lost their cattle to the cats. The predators were killing at least two to four cattle per day in areas along Save River since last year,” said Clr Mugidho.
Efforts to get a comment from the Department of Parks and Wildlife were fruitless at the time of going to print. An elderly villager who declined to be named said they were now poisoning the wild cats to protect their livestock.
“Look, we are losing cattle each day. I have lost seven beasts since last year to the lions. We have raised our concerns with the Department of Parks and Wildlife, but they are not doing enough to contain the situation,” he said. manica post

Was in the Zambezi Delta 2 years ago. Trackers and I (mostly trackers) picked up over 150 snares in 5 days. Not a single one of them were "new" meaning from that season, but all still active. The P.H. told me that a "good" poacher could set 100 snares in a single night. Such a waste of animals and resources.View attachment 57983
Zambezi Delta Safaris - 7 reedbuck 2 warthog carcasses 33 snares removed and 6 poachers captured -
Mike, what happens if the poacher gets "caught" in a snare, and is left for the hyenas? Sounds like a cruel but appropriate punishment.i received this on the 13th march from our manager.
"Just to let you know that a poacher was arrested on Friday night by Modern
and Kapaipai close to the bottom house. I took him to K-------i yesterday.
We believe he is part of the group that was active December 2015.
Evidence: 2 x shotguns, bushbuck and warthog meat.
He is out on a police bond at the moment waiting for his wounds to heal
before he can be taken to court as he resisted arrest, was beaten and
dragged on his back for quite a distance to the bottom house where I
collected him. "

"Hi
Just to inform you that I have to report to M-----e police tomorrow with Knox, Modern and Kapaipai (scouts) following the arrest of the suspect last Friday.
Apparently he is in hospital due to the beating he got resisting arrest.
The police is following up on this as I am sure his relatives made a case of some sort and are after money because of a white face !!!!
Will update you upon my return."
received this on mon 21st march
"As my gut told me lots of shit and intimidation.
The relatives of the suspect and the police are in on this as everything is about money.
Not one statement was taken as they are just not interested in what we have to say.Simon, Knox and Modern (OUR GAME SCOUTS) are in custody for now pending the recovery of the suspect.I am also implicated as scouts were in my charge although I was not there when he was arrested at first."
received 22nd march
"Hi.
