Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

I only own 3 rifles, realistically will add a 22 when my son is older and a 9.3.

30-06
50 cal muzzy
275 rigby

If i could own any 3 centrefires it would be

275 rigby
450/400 NE double
Well really what else would i need!

A .17 Hornet .....for the "fun to shoot"!

.308Win. or 6,5x54MS ( that long 160 grainer just penetrate..I even have old Kynoch solids..)
.375H&H (what else..9,3x64 of course...brilliant and overlooked, effectively killed by WW2..)
.470 or .500 Jeffery....or if the lotto hit me, .577NE

:coffee: i gots to think on that????

7x57 custom 98 mauser. boy, the deer it has killed(my son now has it)
444 marlin in a tc encore with 23" MGM barrel
222 rem savage m340. groundhog hater(sold it, because i shot out the barrel:(, dumb)

the runner(s) up....
500 linebaugh tc encore with 23" MGM barrel
30-40 krag 1898 spr armory(bubbasized :A Crutches:)
20 vartarg tc encore with 23" MGM barrel
9.3x57 husky m46

Since in haven't chimed in here yet here are mine.

.22 long rifle
7mm Rem mag
.340 Weatherby

Limited experience due to living in shotgun land: so...

22 lr. (Just tried my brand new Marlin this morning—brother kgesch won the shooting competition!)

270 (love it-if you don’t read some more Jack O’Conner until you do)

300 Winchester Mag (will do a lot well)

my choices change from year to year as I use more of my rifles and they perform in a certain fashion that suits my hunts, so at this moment in time I will choose :

  1. .270 win - for my Springbok and Gemsbok hunting (I utilize the meat and therefore select my .270 over my .300wm for that reason )
  2. 375 Ruger Alaskan - this little .375 with 20"barrel is my first choice rifle that I pack for most of my PG hunts .
  3. 416 - difficult to choose between my Rigby or my Remington , both work fantastic
I am sure that my choices will change in time but for now this is my selection.

Hard to choose

.223 Rem - Really like this chambering for foxes and the little muntjac deer
7x64 - Works well on everything from Chinese Water Deer to Red Deer and Wild Boar (Gets the nudge over my .257 Roberts due to having that bit more thump)
9.3x62 - Just a great round when you need to sit something down and doesn't beat you up like a 40 Cal (Realise would be light for elephant but I don't have a desire to hunt one of those)

For me it would be 6.5x55, 30-06 and a 375 H&H....all veteran calibres, but more than capable of doing whatever I'm likely to ask of them.

Three is not enough..... not reasonable person would appear with the idea, to have only three women for "everything"!!!

...will not work.

There is always a situation, where you need a very special tool, that fits perfect for the task.

Three gunsafes.... maybe

it's a sad day if we ever have to make do with a mere trio, but...

204 Ruger
9.3x62
404 J

.22LR as it was the calibre that I learned my trade with for more years than I remember as a kid, open sights and short range helped me with my stalking schooling.

7mm RM and near on 40 years with the one rifle makes it like a good wife. Flat fast and hard I carry it just about every day.

.358 Norma mag, hard hitting and flat shooting for what I want.

243 win

340 wby on rem action

458

Honorable mention—22lr—223–7mm rem mag

cannot be done with only 3!!!

22 lr-everybody needs a 22!
222 Rem-varmints
243 Win-varmints and small game long range
6.5x55 Swede or 6.5x57mm-small to medium pg at longer range open areas
300 H&H-medium to large PG at longer range open areas
7x57mm-small to medium game shorter range bushveldt areas
375 H&H-large pg at shorter range and smaller dg in bushveldt areas
500 Jeff DG at shorter range and sort the problems out as a PH
12ga/9.3x74R O/U combination-bushpig and leopard backup rifle.
12ga O/U-wingshooting

357 Sig, Glock 33 subcompact(not for plinking)

That is about the minimum I would be able to live with!

257 Weatherby Magnum.
35 Whelen.
460 Weatherby , and I own a 500 Nitro Express Double.

Truly too sadistic to make me choose just three.

.22LR
.223
6.5 Creedmoor
.280 AI
.303 Brit
.30-30
.300 Wby
.338 Lapua
.450 NE
.577 NE

I will limit myself to rifle cartridges.
22 LR
300 Win Mag
375 H&H

Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.

may I suggest Intaba Safaris in the East Cape by Port Elizabeth, Eugene is a great guy, 2 of us will be there April 6th to April 14th. he does cull hunts(that's what I am doing) and if you go to his web site he is and offering daily fees of 200.00 and good cull prices. Thanks Jim
Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
