Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

??? Why ? historical ammo ... maybe a little weak ... but so soft:LOL:

Hi Bebo,

Norwegianwoods was agreeing with my vote for the 9.3x62, from the cartridges listed by the original poster, and was pondering which one to choose for his next PG hunt.

So, if according to you thw hunting world is suddenly suffering from "maybe a little weak ... but so soft" 9.3x62 ammunition, it is a news flash to me.

And here I'd been stumbling along in my ignorant bliss that, the 9.3x62 had been developed specifically for Africa and enjoys a 100 + year stellar reputation in that regard.

Silly me,
Velo Dog.

BUG BUG ... I didn't speak about 9.3x62 ... I have one : CZ 550 synthetic 9.3x62 : if I have to keep only one rifle I would hesitate between 9.3x62
375H&H or .. 338WM .. I wrote about the old "velodog" cartridge ... Lol

Hi again Bebo,

Ooopsie, my error.

When I read your question and self-answer, I totally thought you were asking why Norwegianwoods was agreeing with my vote for the 9.3x62.

Sometimes I'm a little slow but steady as a rock.....OK that 2nd part is a lie but, I used to be.

You're absolutely correct that the Velodog ("Velocipede-Anti Dog", or something to that affect) line of revolvers and cartridges were miniatures for sure.

And if I now understand your question, I chose it as my screen name because of the contrast with the types of firearms and ammunition most hunters typically use for African big game and so called plains game alike.

When I was child, a friend of mine's father was about 6'-4" or 6'-5" and at least 300 pounds I will guess from memory and his moniker was "Tiny".

It is metaphorically something like that ..... kinda simple I know but, if you look at my posted profile, you will notice that my credentials do not include Rocket Scientist or Brain Surgeon, etc.

Cheerio,
Velo Dog.

My joke wasn't very clear ...
Velodog : when I was (very) young - XX years ago - I gazed longingly at these small pistols ... Later , the Vaquero will replace the Velodog ..
in my dream .. associated with a Winch 94 ..:) and today I use 9.3x62 & .416RM ..., long range : .270W ....

.30-06 Springfield (first rifle was a WWII milsurp 1903 A3)
6.5 x 55 SE (Swede, SKAN, Norwegian; they're all awesome)
.243 Winchester (neatest little 6mm ever)

My mind may change a bit if and when I make it up between the 375 Ruger and 416 Ruger, still not really sure which one, although I am leaning towards the 375 Ruger because I can build one on a Howa action with a 24" barrel. With hand loads, this will surpass the 375 H&H in every category.

Rogerthat, no worries and I too lean toward the old time hardware.
Many of those things are time machines when we use them today, in the same tradition they were designed for back when.

Aren't you afraid of the weight of the (exceptional) Howa 1500 in .375Ruger, not too light? I'm in love with it but in .270W ( long range)

Not afraid of the weight. I was going to take the barreled action out of the original stock and put it into a Bell and Carlson Medallist, like this one:

If I add the Limbsaver recoil pad and a Mule Kicker mercury reducer, it'll be like shooting a 7mm-08 in a t-shirt. Trust me, I shoot an original Winchester 1895 in 405 Win (Teddy's big medicine stick) with steel butt plate, so I am aware of stout recoil. I also hunt upland and waterfowl with a Mossberg 935 with full power 3 1/2" magnum loads, not much fun with turkeys in the spring.

In terms of african hunting
30-06
375 H&H
470 NE

my favorite just add .223 rem

Shot Shot

22-250, 25-06, 338WM. Honorable mention to my newest BG rifle, 300WSM in a Kimber Montana.

223 Heavy Barrel Savage Action
7MM-08 Apache Arms Barrel Savage Action
308 Win on my CZ550 Mannlicher

I think for anybody, .22lr and 12ga goes without saying. With that said, my three current favorites are

.223 Rem
.243 Win
.270 Win

Haven’t had the need for anything in a medium or large bore yet, so I’ve had no need to add one to my battery.

Three, really? OK, if I could only have 3 I’d have to go with:

7x57
.375 H&H
.458 Lott

That’s where I’ve bet with my checkbook (custom Model 70’s in these three calibers). I assume I get to keep my varmint rifles since that’s more predator control than hunting???

.270 Winchester, .300 Win Mag, .375 H&H

Ok....my three favorites are:

30-30
30-06
And .44 mag.

But if I could only have three for N. America they would be:

.22 Mag
30-06
.350 Rem Mag

If it were three for hunting animals worldwide they would be:

.22 Mag
30-06
.416 Rigby

Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
