Obsession with tactical rifles & equipment

I wonder how many who have done the same, only with Red Dead Redemption as their background for interest.

Or in the 70s how many bought the guns from the social commentary movie series, first Dirty Harry then Death Wish .
Lol well I got my cowboy guns before I played Red Dead but it does make me want more of them.

I think the shooters in the USA understand this. (for the most part)

We are fortunate in that we have the 2nd amendment to our USA Constitution that gives USA citizens the right to keep and bear firearms.

We also (for the most part) understand that our right to have firearms has nothing to do with having guns for sporting purposes, but has all to do with fighting tyranny and foreign invaders.

I’m sure you know this, but for clarity, the second amendment does not grant us the right to keep and bear arms. It is much stronger than that. It states the the government cannot infringe upon our right to bear arms. In other words, we are born with that right and the government does not have the authority to take it away.

And yet we are two liberal justices away from a 2A interpretation empowering the individual right to join a militia and bear arms (probably defined as the National Guard).

You are absolutely correct!

The Constitution does not "give" rights to US citizens. It it there to restrict the government from making laws that infringe on God-given rights.

The Bill of Rights actually begins with the words:

"Congress shall make no law..."

Some younger shooters & gun shops seem to have an obsession with tactical fire arms & equipment , cammo chassis
rifles, high capacity magazines. muzzle breaks bipods , night vision gear, military packs & cloathing i have seen kids at the range with muzzle breaks on a 22 RF , & banana mags & tactical scopes, I believe that is the wrong image to be setting & it plays right into the anti gun turds agenda. Or am i out of touch?. The blued steel & walnut hunting rifle seems to be a thing of the past . They even sell lever release 12 g shot guns with pistol grip stocks & detachable box magazines, for duck hunting.
@rdog
Seems to be the current trend with the younger ones at our range. When you ask them about hunting with them the answer is usually I don't hunt with it it's for range use.
Some say it's their long range hunting gear for shooting out to 700 yards. You would be surprised how many have shot game ate that distance. When you ask them how far that distant target is the common answer is 350 to 400 yards. They look at you in amazement when you tell them it's only 200 and say no it's further than that.
Then you have the I'll informed that tell you that their cartridge will kill game at 1km even tho it's the 6.5 manbun.
They gladly let you look at their pride and joy and handle it. For some I need to go back to the gym before I try to lift them. They would be great in the bush on a golf buggy tho.
Fortunately there are enough old farts at the range to keep it sensible with their plain Jane hunting rifles and scopes.
Don't start me on these tact ti cool scopes that you can see a flea on a deer's arse at 500 yards and that's on the lowest power.

Bob you are spot on, our range has a 700 meter section where the sniper wantabees hang out most with 6.5 CM with brakes on &
when you suggest that the 6.5 has not got enough energy at that distance to kill efficiently, they look at you in a disbelieving way.& say a 300 Win MAG with a 190 grain SMK has too much recoil to shoot prone, & as you say i would have to go to gym to lift their 6.5 s . good on them we need as many shooters as we can, but where they get their info from i do not know, one said his 300 Black out was good to about 500 meters.

Coca-cola in another form as I always say. They always have to sell the "next best" (cheapest, most profitable) thing to the masses. The reason the measly .22 cal was adopted for military use. It wounds! LOL smh We use larger for woodchuck (marmot) hunting where I live! Manage a 10 person max limit hunting club and when they approved the semi-auto guns, we balked, not wanting WWIII in our faces when the season started. Consequently, the deer find sanctuary on our farms (even those with a 55 gr blister!) :p Deer/antelope are more well-constructed than Charlie.

300 blackout (in a hunting scenario)-less power than a 30-30. LOL Deer aren't in-tune with "subsonic." LOL

when i hear the industry buzz words "build," "platform," etc. I wanna puke. You didn't build anything. You have a cheap erector set sold to you by ACME. LOL :p You operated a screwdriver. <participation trophy sent> Moreover, you are the reason Jose Bi Dem is president, et al.

Where does the Blaser R8 fit in this conversation.:A Stirring::A Outta:

i have an all-titanium piston and gas-operated R8 for sale, with the rare (caliber) selector (.22-.700) 4M rubles gets the convo started...it's ALL black plastic, black evthing-not a knock-off LOL 5 cartridge cases and 1 sling swivel incl. Oh, and a Tasco 4x!

One fact that often gets overlooked in discussions such as this is the rather significant amount of money these other members of the US gun community contribute to conservation through Pittman-Robertson excise taxes.

Marc - you are spot on!!!

Georgia recently spent several 10's of millions of $ renovating our publics shooting ranges, which was funded by a windfall of PR dollars during the Obama administration.

The cost of using these ranges = a Georgia Hunting License!

I sometimes work at a couple of Georgia's public ranges. True, many of these shooters have no interest in hunting (which is OK by me), but others would like to hunt, but simply don't know how to get started, because they did not grow up in a hunting culture.

There needs to be more effort with NGO's (SCI, NRA, NWTF, RMEF, QDMA. etc.) to get these people who live in urban or suburban areas involved in hunting. There are definitely folks out there who would like to hunt, but just don't have a pathway into the culture.

That is EXACTLY what First Hunt Foundation does. it matches up first time hunters with experienced mentors and places to hunt. they collaborate with pheasants forever and other upland groups to provide put& take birds; also with the departments of wildlife to obtain damage permits for big game damage hunts. also involved with turkey and waterfowl hunts.

Check out their website- Google First Hunt Foundation.

First they came for the "assault rifles", and I did not speak out—because I was not a semi-automatic guy.

Then they came for the "riot guns", and I did not speak out— because I was not a shotgunner.

Then they came for the handguns and I did not speak out—because I was not a handgunner.

Then they came for the "sniper" rifle — and there was no one left to speak for me.

Exactly, as firearms, hunting, freedom enthusiasts, we should support any other enthusiast no matter if we personally like their specific flavour. The more we are united, the more protected we all are from undue changes in law.

Sorry mate I just picked myself up from the floor after laughing my guts out. Even crackshot @Forrest Halley isn't silly enough to believe that and he owns one.
Did the clown tell you that was a it subsonic ammo as well, that would have been even funnier.
Those would be 700 yard snipers are fine at the range but get them in the bush with no rangefinder or markers and wind flags and see how they go. Their range estimates turn to shit. 300 yards suddenly becomes 5 to 550 yards or could be a bit further. They crack me up
If'n you really want to piss them off shoot smaller groups than them at 200 yards with your HUNTING RIFLE and a 3.5 to 10 x44 scope. That really suits them and has them head scratching and full of excuses like I'm still working on a load for it.
Life is good.

For anyone interested, Annie Oakley, An American Experience PBS DVD about 1hr, is well worth the watch. Puts everythng in perspective about the legend. I think Edison invited her to do some different studio shooting demonstrations (like the clip here) to promote his new movie camera.

I know a number of serious PRS shooters. I'd put up any of them against "hunters" that barely shoot a few hundred rounds a year, especially in long range marksmanship.

And no, you are not going to shoot smaller groups against a PRS guy with an optimized firearm and even factory match ammo at 200 yards with a hunting rifle. Next you will be comparing yourself in a "Smart car" against a Formula car driver saying your tires last longer and you do much better at parallel parking. ;) Horses for the courses.

BTW, lefty version of this rifle in 6mm CM will be on its way to me in about 17 more weeks (minus the scope). And yes, in marine red. Factory accuracy guarantee with factory ammo is 3/8 MOA (3 shot group), wonder what that is for 200 yards? Unfortunately, I don't have thick enough hair for a man-bun. :ROFLMAO:

I really do not understand the contempt and animosity against guys that like different shooting sports using different calibers and gear.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
