    416 Rigby Ammo

I wish it could be more but I am not an adventurous loader. I worked on a while on getting a good black powder load for my .45 Colt and a real hot 180 grain bullet .357 Magnum load for a Desert Eagle. After I had a .41 Magnum Blackhawk explode in my hand I stopped trying to push the envelope...

    416 Rigby Ammo

I would refer you to the manuals produced by the powder and bullet manufacturers. And there are some great YouTube videos out there. I mostly reload handgun ammo (.45 Colt, .44 Special, .357 Magnum, 9mm) and I learned most by reading (which is how I learn best) and by watching how it was done...

    220 swift for big game?

I always think it is better to overgun than undergun. I have shot squirrel with my .416 Rigby as well as .270 Winchester and they were more than adequate!

    416 Rigby Ammo

Congratulations on the .416 Rigby! Ammo is a real pain in the ass right now, if you can find it. Even reloading components are almost unobtainium. I am lucky that my rifle is most accurate with the I guess cheapest ammo, Hornady DGX. So far I have been unable to load anything more accurate...

    220 swift for big game?

I know that folks use 22 caliber pills on deer and such but, just because someone can doesn't make it right. I have had fun with a .220 Swift but I would go for a bigger bullet for something that is larger than a groundhog or crow. I have seen crows turn into mush, vapor, and feathers and...

270 Winchester better than 7mm mag?

I have been a big .270 fan for many years. From watching reactions to hits from many different rounds, to include the 7mm RM, there is no appreciable difference between the two. On paper, yes, but in actual performance no. You get bragging rights with the 7mmRM being louder, and more abusive...

Obsession with tactical rifles & equipment

Well here is my 2 cents worth. I am of the mind that real rifles are blued steel and wood. Those black plastic stainless steel tacticool toys are just to plain ugly for my tastess. However I will be the first to admit that an AR is a great tool. I know for a fact that I can hit a 10 inch...

    Closest kill

I killed a whitetail buck with an 1860 Army cap and ball revolver at damn near contact range. His fur was burnt from the muzzle blast. Something like about 2 feet or so. Heavy brush and pure luck combined to put me in that situation. I have shot numerous squirell at less that 3 feet with...

Power level..How do you ever rationalize going back down?

I have used a .270 deer since age 12 (along with .45 Colt) but I have switch to my .416 Rigby because I just like to use it. Now soon my Granddaughters will start joining me and I will be switching from my .416 Rigby back to either .45 Colt or my .270 Weatherby for light weight and focus on...

    Long Over Due

Welcome! I am working to get things straight for an African trip but, like you, I am hunting close to home. Small game like squirell and such with my slingshot and deer and maybe black bear out in the swamp near my house with a rifle and a handgun fill my spiritual need to hunt. You are so...

What is the dumbest thing you ever did to damage a brand new gun?

I was looking to buy a new toy at a gun shop in Tennessee and when the guy behind the counter handed me a brand spanking new Colt Delta Elite 10mm I fumbled fingered it and it dropped to the glass counter and busted the glass. Made me feel like crawling into a hole. I did end up buying the...

    What Is Your Dream Rifle?

I don't think that we can ever achieve what we want for a "dream rifle". In my early days it was an M1 carbine and a Sturmgewer, Later it was a Rigby Big Game .416 Rigby and a Knok volley gun. Today after years of playing with different toys I would love to have back some of the toys I traded...

Deer hunting with a .458 Win Mag

Bob, I had a watermelon vine come up by accident and I didn't pay any attention and let them go bad before I got them picked. I sneaked up on them and got them from up close. Two quick shots and I got the two largest ones. 400 Grains of .416 at 2400 fps is great watermelon medicine...

Deer hunting with a .458 Win Mag

Use that .458 and enjoy it! I have been using my .416 Rigby CZ 550 on deer, squirell, coyote, rampant watermelons, and other critters here in NC for the last few years and enjoy my rifle. It is comforting to know that I am as ready for a wondering buffalo as a whitetail. 400 gr Hornady DGX has...

What is the least used and least liked rifle in your safe? Why?

I have a Weatherby MK5 accumark in.270 Weatherby Magnum that is one of those love/hate things. The rifle is laser gun accurate but rarely used because I hate the look of a stainless steel action and barrel and a black plastic stock. Just personal preference for wood and blued steel.

    If You Lost Everything

I would find me another CZ550 in .416 Rigby and yet another tang safety Ruger 77 in . 270 Winchester. Then I would splurge on a Rigby Highland Stalker in .275 Rigby. Following these a new slingshot for squirrel hunting.

    Anyone use the .270 Winchester?

Bob, my cousin wore his .25-06 into a smoothbore. I helped him out as we both liked to shoot crows, groundhogs, fish, and the neighbors tomatoes. That thing was hell on a groundhog way out around 400 yards. He did test up a bunch of meat on whatever deer he shot. That was 40 years ago so the...

    Anyone use the .270 Winchester?

I got to play with all kinds of rounds in my younger days by happenstance. Everything from .220 Swift to .375 H&H. I hunted deer early on with an original Sharps 45-70 and a worn out model 94 in 30-30. Being a voracious reader I ran across O'Conner around age 8 and wanted to get a .270 then...

US Marine Corps Commandant General David H. Berger

I would love to comment yay on the Commandant saying this. However, He is there worst Commandant that I have been around to see. His realignment of the Corps will gut our warfighting ability. Removing the logistical units, tanks, helicopters, and artillery assets is a real problem...

    Cheap $100 Scope

The whole "spend at least as much on a scope as you do on the rifle" has always amused me. However, with that said, the very best performance of a rifle scope I have ever had was from a...

    Recoil limit

I believe that how a round acts while inside the chamber also contributes to how individuals react to the recoil. I can shoot my .416 Rigby with little trouble after learning MY rifle. However I find that a .300 WinMag to be downright painful. I shoot my .270 Winchester with little problem...
