Tire kicking for a Ruger #1

They are pretty cool guns. I have a No.1 in 450/400 that was customized quite nicely with a fine dark piece of wood and case colors. It is light and that made me a little nervous hearing the same chatter as others have mentioned here. However, it fits me well and is pleasant to shoot. I hand load Swift A-Frames mainly (shoots great with RL19 at ~2000-2100 fps) but it likes Woodleigh and CEB too.

Don't be wary of the 450/400. You've got some nice options and can't go wrong with any of them. Been looking at that .303 stalking rifle myself for a while now too.

Possibly. Shoot me a price on it and a few pics if you get a chance.
Take a look at this rifle @rookhawk states, consider the rimmed cartridge in the Ruger #1. It just works.

While I have several in 30-05, 375 H&H, 416 Remington Mag, all 100% reliable, but the action cartridge handling is superb.

As @rookhawk stated, the recall is serious.
Not just the rifle weight, but stock dimensions makes a BIG Difference.
400 grain at 2100 fps with a light powder change is Stout Recoil.

Better is a 300 grain Hornady SP, same powder charge (75% rule) is much more pleasant for recoil. Hogs don’t like them.
Makes the 450/400 very shootable.

The better made rifles are the limited production versions, pre 2012, or the standard chambering pre 2001.’
Pre 1976 rifles are very finely crafted.

Excluding custom guns, here is the known universe of what Ruger #1s exist. If they made them in limited years, you can infer they are very rare. Also, there are several weights/sizes of barrels and forestocks that make unique versions, plus mannlichers, plus stainless, plus laminate production runs.

Thanks for the time on your reply.

I have ordered 150 pieces of 45/70 brass from @RAVEN ROCKS PRECISION and I am about to start the search today for a Couteney. If I end up with a 303 that's fine too, I have a 45/70 lever gun, but I think that rifle in 45/70 with some 250-300 grain raptors would be a sweet hunting rifle. With it being a single shot I don't have to worry about OAL so I can even lob some big ole 500 grainers if I want to.

The 45-70 Courteney is in stock at EuroOptic.

We are still making the Courteney. It's my own creation--I literally hand-drew it on a number of legal sheets stapled together, in 1:1 scale. Uberti was great at making it exactly as I wanted it. It's selling very well--roughly equally in .303 and .45-70. I wish we could also make it in some of the rimless cartridges, but it's an impossibility with the current action design.

Build one in 9.3x74r I will buy one!

I know where one is in 600JDJ, which is the 577 necked up, if I didn’t have so many irons in the fire I’d be after it.
@Flewis - do you know if that individual with a #1 in 600JDJ is willing to part ways with it? I have a 500NE #1 and would be interested to talk to them. I've been looking for the 470NE as well. Saw one in GB a long time ago, missed opportunity.

I’ve got:
•Ruger #1V 243 26” BL
•Ruger #1H 475 Turnbull 26” BL, factory chambered, Turnbull upgrades

Not having owned a #1 previously, scoping the 243 was a booger bear. I needed substantially more eye relief than what I was used to.

I will ask him, he has several different calibers. I maybe the one who got that 470, sorry.

It’s already been sold, sorry I didn’t know.

I have a friend who is a Ruger #1 fan and he just picked up the 357 Mag they produced for the CHP. I have not see it yet but he is excited about owning it.
