Tire kicking for a Ruger #1

I have a friend who is a Ruger #1 fan and he just picked up the 357 Mag they produced for the CHP. I have not see it yet but he is excited about owning it.

I've seen them listed on GB.

The #1 action is a real beast so it can be customized to hold virtually any cartridge, although getting a 470NE or 500NE is not trivial. You're talking about custom gunsmithing that modifies the action to fit a beast of a cartridge.

The bigger concern is they are lightweight stalking rifles. When you put a medium sized cartridge in them, they kick like a mule. Larger rimmed cartridges also tend to get stuck up on the OEM safety which leads to expensive gunsmithing of a custom tang safety.

The biggest factory made ruger I'd recommend is the 450-400 which is still a big kicker in a light gun. The most pleasant would be 375HH flanged, but I'm not sure they ever made 375 rimmed.
The No. 1 Tropical had a bull barrel. While relatively light a lead filled copper tube in the butt stock can help. I haven't found the #1s in the heavy's to be too bad.... 458, 416 Rigby. I have a 470 created by Hamilton Bowen ...just like the one featured with Ross Seyfried years ago. I agree that the 450-400 is the best balance presently.

I would love custom Ruger Nr.1 in

450 no.2 NE 3 1/2", 9.3x74R and 7x65R.....
There was recently one on Gun Africa in 458 for a really good price, sold now, but next time grab it and do your thing IvW.

The new Uberti 1885 Courteney in 45/70 is on the way! I have 100 of the 370 grain CEB Raptors and 500 of the Berry's 350 grain plated bullets with 150 new pieces of Starline Brass inbound as well. Once I get all of it together and start some load work up I will start a thread on it and let y'all know how she is performing! As usual thanks again for helping me spend my money :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I saw the one that @Racinjason had listed here and it got me thinking, I have never owned a #1 and I might like too. I'm curious what all is out there. I don't have a specific caliber in mind and I would be open for anything from pistol calibers to a 500 Nitro. Maybe a sweet 450/400 or 470 if they even make them in that caliber, or perhaps a 275 rigby or even a plain old 30/06. If you happen to have a Ruger #1 you are considering parting with please let me know what you have.
Thanks!
@Backyardsniper
Pity your not in Australia. My mate Greg used sold a lovely No1 in 270.
Nice wood and 26 inch barrel.
It was just asking to be turned into a 270 Weatherby. Simple reamer job.
He sold it for 1,700 dollars AUD.
Bob

@Backyardsniper
If you ask @Forrest Halley nicely he may part with his No1 in the mild mannered 458 Lott.
Bob
I bought a uberti Courteney in 45-70. I am now studying 45-70 load data to figure out how much powder I can safely stuff behind a 500 grain bullet in this thing. It looks like 1700fps or so is a possibility.

Excluding custom guns, here is the known universe of what Ruger #1s exist. If they made them in limited years, you can infer they are very rare. Also, there are several weights/sizes of barrels and forestocks that make unique versions, plus mannlichers, plus stainless, plus laminate production runs.

I may look closer at the 375 H&H listed on here. That loaded down with some 235 grain Barnes would make a sweet little plains game rifle
If you’re serious about a No. 1 let me know. I know where several are including a couple 375’s and 458WM’s are, as well as a 300 H&H & 257 Roberts.

Thanks, BIG heaps. a fellow fanatic Down Under is chasing one in 300 H&H; I'll let him know. Me? 416 Rigby, or 458 Lott; as stated the export/import brouhaha is onerous in the extreme ...

I love the No.1 rifles, have a .257 Roberts, a 9.3x74 and a .35 Whelen which happily has a nice thick Decelerator on my end of it.
I dont care to shoot one in any of the heavier calibers, have done so and its not fun, from the bench anyway, the .450-400 was brutal.
I once had the .303 Brit and it was a fine shooter, but sadly it went down the road. Instead I now have the Courteney in .303 and it seems to be a good shooter.

Hello, My wife and I hunted with Marius 2 years ago. He fit us into his schedule after a different outfitter "bailed" on us. He was always very good with communications and although we didn't end up meeting him personally, he called us multiple times during our hunt to make sure things were going well. We were very happy with him.

Reach out to the guys at Epic Outdoors.

They will steer you right for landowner tags and outfitters that have them.

I have held a membership with them for years and they are an invaluable resource.

Way better that asking random people on the internet...WAY better

Skydiver386,

Did you ever find your 30-06 CZ550? I own a fairly solid conditioned one, if you wanted to talk.
