Tire kicking for a Ruger #1

Tom, if you designed the Courtney. You deserve an award.

I can’t believe the quality for the price. it shoots very well with .303 ball ammo and quality ammo.

if it had a British name it could sell for A LOT more. I love a Ruger 1. But Ruger could take some lessons from the Courtney. Great job Sir.
I just found one on guns.com. is that place legit? I have never used them. It's a 45/70 for $1600. I may buy it, I just wasn't sure about that place?

We are still making the Courteney. It's my own creation--I literally hand-drew it on a number of legal sheets stapled together, in 1:1 scale. Uberti was great at making it exactly as I wanted it. It's selling very well--roughly equally in .303 and .45-70. I wish we could also make it in some of the rimless cartridges, but it's an impossibility with the current action design.

Tom, does Uberti offer a tang mounted peep sight for this rifle?

I’ve been curious about that business as well. They have an insane amount of listings and they all have different background photos. I assume it’s all online consignment?

Now I'm in a real pickle, whether to get the Courtney in 303 or 45/70 if I can find one. Both are really good rounds and both have distinct pros and cons. I guess the 303 would be more useful for general hunting.

I saw the one that @Racinjason had listed here and it got me thinking, I have never owned a #1 and I might like too. I'm curious what all is out there. I don't have a specific caliber in mind and I would be open for anything from pistol calibers to a 500 Nitro. Maybe a sweet 450/400 or 470 if they even make them in that caliber, or perhaps a 275 rigby or even a plain old 30/06. If you happen to have a Ruger #1 you are considering parting with please let me know what you have.
Thanks!
Another convert!!

Excluding custom guns, here is the known universe of what Ruger #1s exist. If they made them in limited years, you can infer they are very rare. Also, there are several weights/sizes of barrels and forestocks that make unique versions, plus mannlichers, plus stainless, plus laminate production runs.

Very useful data; thank you! I'll save that.

I may look closer at the 375 H&H listed on here. That loaded down with some 235 grain Barnes would make a sweet little plains game rifle
Last time I was in Australia one of the guys in camp had a #1 in .303; I thought it was quite handy and well balanced.

I would later speak with a man outside of Cairns who swears by the #1 .303 with the heavy round nose bullets for pigs and all manner of deer.

Would be good for whitetail… or better than your 500j results!

It would also make a classy and versatile plains game rifle.

Hey bud I have a 470 and a 450-400. I have the lighter version of the 450- 400 and I think it’s about like a 375. The 470 is about 9lbs and it’s more recoil than the 500j you sold me. But quite shootable.

My first #1 was also a 9.3x74r. It shoots way better than I ever expected! I replaced the trigger, which was interesting task, and worth every minute. It’s a great handling round. I cannot wait to carry it some this fall

Or find a neglected No. 1 and turn it into something special. I have posted this before, but this is my now very English looking .300 H&H. Case colors by Turnbull.

tricked out Ruger No. 1

And like most No. 1's it shoots.
British Columbia Mule Deer

Tom, will the Courtney action handle more than the 45-70.

Hi, Altitude, the .303 is the highest-pressure round we've chambered it in (that is, since my involvement with Uberti), so I would be hesitant to speculate on something that may involve danger to the user. I would say that anything within the pressure range of the .303 would be OK.

We are still making the Courteney. It's my own creation--I literally hand-drew it on a number of legal sheets stapled together, in 1:1 scale. Uberti was great at making it exactly as I wanted it. Great job! I think the design is outstanding. It sounds like Uberti is selling every one they can make. If they made it in another cartridge, 405 Winchester would be a great choice.

An replace that God awful rail with a quarter rib cut for Talley rings! :A Way To Go:

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
