I read the speech given by the Secretary General of the U.N. about the Israeli v Hamas war. He did condemn the terrorist action against Israeli civilians….butchery is a better term…but had to add that these atrocities didn’t happen in a vacuum. Basically saying that Israel had it coming.

There‘s a lengthy list of gripes against the U.N. Including its latent antisemitism. The General Assembly is basically a dictators club. Iran’s ambassador leads the U.N. Human Rights Council Social Forum for crying out loud!

What purpose does the U.N. Serve? More to the point, what American interests are served by being a member?
I've been saying, and posting that we (in Australia, at least) should cut ALL ties and allegiances with the UN, and like organisations (WHO etc) immediately. Only contact is through observer status.

So that I am fully understood, this is not a racial issue. This is a cultural assimilation issue. Those are two very different things. Only in the United States would it be possible to create a "brown" class of citizens. I don't think it matters a bit if we have a majority minority country in a couple of decades.

Most of the immigrants coming into this country are from the Hispanic /Catholic Southern Hemisphere. Some of the more recent emigres from places like Venezuela are going to be harder to assimilate, but that is because of the economic system from which they are emerging. It is one thing to come here for opportunity which has described most Mexicans and Cubans (Mariel excluded) rather than to be better taken care of by government which seems to be a legacy of those fleeing failed socialist states. But even they, and particularly their children, will assimilate.

The vast majority of these people, regardless of actual racial heritage, view themselves as representing an original European heritage and culture.

I am quite confident that Asian, Hispanic, and whatever constitutes "white' America will maintain a vibrant homogenous Western Culture that can carry on the traditions of Athens, Rome, and the capitalist economic system. I did not automatically include black America because it has stubbornly resisted assimilation since the Civil War. Indeed, I would argue those cultural differences are greater now than they were in 1963 when Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream speech."

Thanks to BLM and a healthy dose of latent white guilt, that 14% of the population has wielded a disproportionate amount of attention over the last few years. But there too, those barriers were breaking down rather quickly before it became popular to once again be obsessed with race. I expect that to continue unless misguided efforts like reparations continue to have traction.

Islamic culture, for all the reasons I have listed above is a very different assimilation challenge. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the challenges Muslims face in trying to embrace Western culture.
Islam's stated aim is the TOTAL islamification of the globe; don't agree? They will endeavour to destroy us ...

Gaetz was smart enough to get rid of McCarthy.
I wish the Republicans had someone in the Senate that has a pair big enough to get rid of McConnell as minority leader.

What will Johnson be like? I don't know. Will we have another CR or Omnibus next month. Probably. Hopefully by next year Johnson will be able to work on getting government spending cut down. Possibly even single issue spending bills.

What I do know is McCarthy brought this on himself. He wanted to be Speaker enough that he made promises and never attempted to honor them, never thinking he would be called out.

This is all part of the Republican civil war. The old line Republican guard of McCarthy, Ryan and Boehner have been rejected, at least temporarily. On the face of it Johnson is probably the most fiscally conservative Speaker since Gingrich. But, time will tell.

It's time to eject the Republican old guard. They are the problem, and exactly why the Democrats keep steam rolling us.
The Republicans need to evolve and adapt, or they will be no match for the radical factions of the Democrat party.

I don't really know much about Johnson, except that he is supposedly a Christian conservative. I can get behind that in some ways, but I would much prefer a conservative Pitbull, that can take the fight to the Democrats doorstep, and be relentless and unwavering

Lock them up and throw the key away. Now, the left will come after our guns, again!!!

That and they will push redflage laws.
In this case, a red flag law might have saved a lot of lives. Hearing voices and threatening to shoot up a national guard base are not the actions of a sane human being. I think most people would agree that he had no business with immediate access to firearms.

My problem is he seems to be a reflexive Trump acolyte. That doesn't mean supporting many of Trump's initiatives wasn't important and wouldn't be in the future should he be elected again, but it does call into question his independent thought. He has sat comfortably cheering on (not leading) the far right of his party, but now he will have to get things done. He will need to bring along moderates in his own party - even democrats. He seems to have little demonstrated understanding of that necessity. The folks back home like him, but no one there would list him as the sharpest arrow in the quiver. His selection seems to have been the lowest common denominator rather than the best person for the job.

He has also jumped on board the isolationist bandwagon - I assume because he believes that is what Trump wants.

Of course we will have another CR or Omnibus next month. An election is approaching and the republicans already look like they have lost their collective minds.

I just pray that he takes a short intensive course in what constitutes our critical national interests and another one in how actually get things done. As you say, time will tell.

Your are correct, this is a textbook case.

He should never have had access to a firearm just given his record much less his mental health state. We know politicians are going to use every opportunity to push an agenda, right or wrong. Unfortunately a lot of people are suffering from this event. It should have never happened with the laws that are in place right now.

I'm not sure how this one will get spun.

He was in a mental institution for two weeks and released. In my mind the system failed.

Shouldn’t he have been a prohibited person for being involuntarily comitted to a mental health facility?
Every state is different.

After a bit of digging it appears Maine has what is called a "yellow-flag" law. It requires a medical professional to make a formal judgement that the individual represents a danger to himself or others before a seizure request can go to a judge. It apparently went into effect in 2019, and has been employed several times. It would be useful to understand why it was not in this case.

An airline pilot that was deadheading on a commuter jet recently, tried to pull the engine fire extinguisher handles to down the jet.
He's now being charged with 80 plus attempted murder charges, along with other various charges.

A world gone nuts

Mike Johnson is my Congressman, but I admit to know very little about him. However, several life long friends that have lived in this area for most of their adult lives speak highly of Johnson. Granted, this is fairly typical that people like their own Congressman and Senators, it's the other guys in Washington that are the idiots. Johnson came from humble beginnings, his dad was a fireman. Johnson attended public high school in Shreveport (same HS my wife attended) and went on to LSU for an undergrad and law school degree. He is a Constitutional Law specialist. In 2004, Johnson defended and supported a Louisiana Constitutional amendment that defined marriage as between one man and one woman. The amendment was supported by Louisiana voter by 78% to 22% vote. The US Supreme Court, in 2015, overturned the Louisiana law banning same sex marriage.

Johnson was elected speaker, not for what he is, but for what he isn't. Johnson has the least amount of negatives, as far as Republicans are concerned. I am concerned that he has a record of being against more Ukraine support, but appears to be solid behind Israel.

Johnson's election as speaker reminds me of when Pete Rozelle was elected Commissioner of the NFL. There were only 12 teams in the late 50s and it took 23 ballots. Rozelle was viewed as a placeholder and very little was expected of him. Rozelle ended up being the guy that led the NFL to spectacular growth and profits. Maybe, just maybe, Johnson can do the same.

One final comment to the "Drain the swamp crowd." That won't work. Nobody, including Trump, can come into Washington and piss off many or most of the firmly entrenched politicians. What is needed is effective leadership. Trump always acts like he is the boss and can hire and fire on the spot. That doesn't work in DC. Some of the best examples of leadership that I can remember was when Reagan took his case directly to the people. Reagan would do a Presidential address to the nation and lay out his vision to the people. Reagan would then ask people to contact their Congressman and Senators and let them know. Due to Reagans popularity, all the Congressman and Senators fell in line.

System failed because system is not working.

Hi Jon,
I saw your post for the .500 NE cases. Are these all brass or are they nickel plated? Hard for me to tell... sorry.
Thanks,
