Lion hunting SA

Its almost time

Now this is a post I think we all can get behind! Zambezi is definitely something I look forward to after a long, hot day of tracking elephant and buffalo. Just seeing that can takes me back to the Omay.
I am not an excessive drinker but I did indulge in quite a few of these with the occasional shot of Jack Daniels while I was there. Someone left a lovely bottle of Woodford, but Charlie, or Scotty, I don't remember who, finished it off before I could HA

I quess all the wild only hunters realise that if you shot a wild lion which happens to be a part of a two lion coalition in their prime ruling a pride that you actually killed probably 8 to 12 lions for your throphy?

That is why baiting and cameras become essential to properly aging a lion. If the lion is out of the pride and past his prime, that lion will either die a terrible death of starvation, get eaten by other lions or hyenas, or have his life ended quickly by a hunter. But no other lions will die.

Yes, if you kill a pride male, another male will come in and kill cubs to effectively end the lactating cycle of the mother. But this will happen regardless if a hunter kills the lion, or another lion or coalition kills the the lion.

All pride lions spend cinsiderable time away from the pride.....the females are the prime hunters....so they are easy to bait during this time....
You have young and up comings, pride lions and dead ones......

What is this age limit to be determined by the camera footage?

IF is the primary word. I’m not justifying shooting a pride male in any way, but the primary areas lions hunts are occurring they are doing too well or very well. The cubs that are killed in the event of this incident are very young. 8-12 small cubs would not equal 8-12 grown lions. However, the $50k to $100k paid for that lions has conservation benefits for the entire area that would exceed the loss.

I'm not sure I understand where you are taking this argument. Yes there is risk of taking a pride lion which would have negative affects on the pride. But that goes for all animals, is this any different to shooting a bull from a herd? It all loops around to ethical hunting practices that benefit the conservation of land and the future for that species. This is a non argument when comparing wild lions and CBL.

All cubs to 18 months if age are killed( because females do not come in to ustress when their cubs up to 18 months are present).....min age for hunting is typically 6 years old for a lion....the exact age when they have the power to stake claim to a pride....wild lion males live 8 to 10 years.max....so 99% off hunted wild lions are pride lions.....totally disrupting pride dynamics and ending up killing many of the pride....

You feel very strongly against cbl and also high fence hunting in sa....perhaps you are better off joining anti hunting groups who are fighting this rather than continuosly bashing others who do partisipate in hunting in sa...

Huge differance.....

You were previously anti-CBL now you are pro-CBL what changed? Or you are trying to make this argument hunting in South Africa vs elsewhere and you decided supporting South African practices is more important? I’m very anti put and take hunting and South Africa is the epicenter of that practice in Africa for several species CBL being the most prominent. It’s not the first time you told me to join an anti-hunting group I’m sure it won’t be the last. I’ll let you continue your PH persona on AH in the meantime.

All the hunting organizations that issued this joint statement are anti-hunting as well by your logic?

You should spend some time studying wild lion pride dynamics....

Professional as usual. If you ever were a PH I’ll assume that’s why you currently have no clients.

So your alternative is to not hunt wild lions? Hunt CBL instead so that zero funding goes into the preservation of habitat and anti poaching for wild lions? Again I don’t know where youre taking this argument. Many PHs don’t want to take the minimum age lion, they want older. My ph told me he know of 2 lions near camp which were at least 6 but still off limits. This is also in an area with a very good population of lions.

I’m with @TOBY458. Let’s end this everyone please! I have already apologized to everyone after having two glasses of Bourbon and saying “shut up.”. As with several things which makes our forum great…we can agree to disagree and still have great respect and friendship!!!

I will say this: I am glad I was following along with this from the get-go. Imagine someone researching something and getting sucked into the 20 pages of this, after the fact. o_O:p
