On the recoil discussion, its kind of a no brainer actually. Physics.
The heavier person will be hit harder by recoil than the lighter person because the lighter person is more easily moved backwards than the heavier person who offers more resistance.
Simple facts for simple people like me.

And a third thing- keep your mind occupied with something else, such as focusing on the front sight blade or watching the muzzle to follow the bullet to the target or watching the animal for bullet impact- whatever, just don't be focused on "this is going to hurt".

Agreed. I seem to shoot my best when my only thought is to squeeze the trigger such that I'm totally surprised when it breaks.

If that is the actual rifle as advertised, the owner much have had some mighty careful clients for the rifle to be in such fine condition.

In my copy of the book he does describe such a rifle, but there is no way to tell that this is THE rifle.

One issue- The ad says the rifle is a 1957 mfg 338 Win Mag. Only problem, 338 Win Mag wasn't made until 1958. Probably clerical error- but if so, are there any other "clerical errors"?

Being one year off doesnt make any difference. Often actions were brought forward to build a rifle with little regard to when it was made.
Not unusual.

Here's an interesting one: a Westley Richards Farquharson in .450 No. 2. Unfortunately, it looks to have had a rather rough life, and good luck getting Westley Richards to put it back in good order. We can date it fairly precisely to between 1903 (introduction of the cartridge) and 1907 (ban of the calibre). It seems to have that rather attractive naive style of engraving.

The durr-brain auctioneers don't seem to have realised that the rifle requires any purchaser to hold a Firearms Certificate, and seem to be selling it as a curiosity.

That gun has never been owned by a PH. They do more damage taking it out of the box than that gun has seen in its 60+ year life.

But for anyone looking for a deal, you may end up having $3000 of repairs on your "Deal". New England Custom Gun is offering this weapon for sale, which is akin to Champlin offering the gun. The two most expensive dealers, but the two dealers that will not screw you over that have expert gunsmiths.

So if you want a 470NE and you're not an expert, this is your chance to buy one for less than retail that has minimal chance of having a serious defect. So for the uninformed buyer, this is a "Deal" or more appropriately, this is a safe play.

Since NECG was selling it I figured it was worth posting. It would be interesting to see more detailed pictures of it.

If you find a Chapuis in 470 at $7000 that’s worth buying please let me know. You can find a 9.3x74r for that from time to time but I doubt you’ll find one in a larger caliber at that price point.

Just picked a strange one. It’s a springfield krag custom done many years ago. Nice walnut stock with steel butt plate hand checkering. Barrel with standard sights looks aftermarket. Needs tlc, but got it very cheap. Anyone ever hear of one like this? It’s tickling something in my mind, but I can’t pull it out.
