Elk at 688 yards with a 243

I have 400 rounds through my 500 Jeffery, don't see getting to 1000 lol
Well, I have 40 rounds through my Lott and don't see it getting to 100 unless someone sends me some FREE ammo! LOL

@CoElkHunter
Just load cast at 45-70 trapdoor velocity or marlin velocity for it and go shoot shit.
Every problem has a solution

Mine's only a few months home after the build and it's got 93 through it already. 'Course, none of it was factory loads. If I had to shoot factory only, mine probably wouldn't have 20 rounds through it; no such thing as "cheap" 458 Lott factory ammo.

I'm working on a load for the Lott with an Acme 450gr LFN PC that I'm hoping ends up around 1900-2000fps. Should be a pretty mild plinking round; that could also whack any game around here if needed, for well under a buck a round. That would be way cheaper than that 338WM he's always talkin' about, lol

A few months home and 93 rounds through it? You'd better slow down before you burn the barrel out! LOL

We loaded some 405 cast for a 45-70 in a buddy’s 458 win mag with trail boss. It gave us about 1200 fps. You could let kids shoot that.
Trail Boss with any weight cast is a true plinking round. Your load in an 11# rifle would have virtually no recoil. I thought about using TB, but decided I didn't want to drop to 22LR velocities.

@Woodcarver
If he had a Whelen he could load cast pistol bullets, jacketed pistol bullets or proper Whelen bullets.
Even then I think @CoElkHunter would still complain about the price of ammo.
He is that tight if he owned the ocean he wouldn't give you a wave.
He makes a tight arse Scott's man look like a spend thrift.

Just frugal Bob. My feeble brain is just wired as such that won't let me pay more for something that I don't consider a fair value. I/we have to buy whatever the going price is for food, fuel, shelter, insurance, etc., but firearms, reloading stuff, trucks, etc., aren't included. I just can't/won't do it. I bought my CZ/Whitworth big bore rifles in 2018-2020 along with a bunch of reloading stuff for them. I'm glad I did then because I couldn't afford them now. Actually, I could afford them but wouldn't pay their hefty price increases now just because somebody says so. Same with full retail for grossly inflated factory ammo cost and VEHICLES. A roof inspector came by in August because I have to get my roof replaced due to hail damage. He had a NICE newer Chevy 2500 Duramax diesel. He told me it's a 2017 and he bought it for $90K used in 2020 at the height of soaring vehicle prices, because he WANTED it and had to have it NOW regardless of the price. I told him he shouldn't be smoking the green stuff when buying vehicles or getting on roofs. LOL. Of course, I didn't really tell him that, but point being, some people are wired that way and I just am not. More power to them! I considered my 2022 African PG hunt a great value. The taxidermy done in RSA was a good value but the shipping costs were NOT. If I go again, I'll ditch the taxidermy. That's it for now.

My '09 Silverado 1/2 ton's value depends on how much gas is in the tank.

@CBH Australia
Chris @Badboymelvin doesn't overly like the 243 either. To him it's a boring little cartridge. I did try and talk him into a nice 25 as he had a 257 Weatherby at one time. He loved my 25 but thought it was a noisy bitch.
The only game spotted was a fallow fawn and the 25 would have cut it in 2. It was only about 2 and a bit foot tall so would have only got enough meat for a few good sandwiches anyway. It can grow bigger for another day.
Russ's 425 Express is one sweet shooter loaded with 400gn Hornadys at 2,300fps. Very manageable and comfortable to shoot.
Bob

The .243 is boring - just like the .270, .308, .30-06 but I do like it, just as l like the other calibers l mentioned.

I already have my 425 Express which l have to make ammo up from scratch, and a .308 Norma which brass is extremely expensive to buy (I know l can form brass from something else but once again more mucking around), so something nice and boring is just the ticket l reckon (y)

Also my go to rifle for the last few years was my Zastava .458WM with 550gn Woodleigh's at 2100fps, so something with little recoil would be nice for a change!

Russ

Primers, they are unobtanuium ATM.

I think the .243 is a good idea. But Russ, don't let a set of dies be the deciding factor and settle on the wrong rifle just because you have a set of dies. Just food for thought.

No mate, I had decided if l ever got another rifle it would be a .243 a while ago (y)

I'm the same mate I hate paying high prices for stuff that they just want to rip us off on.
I suffer from long pockets, short arm syndrome.

@Badboymelvin
Just a pity I wasn't fitter and was still recovering from surgery.
Pity it was such a short time.
I really appreciate the fact that you made the effort Russ. You are a top bloke and welcome at my camp-fire any time mate.

Russ after shooting that 425 Express retire the 458. It's one sweet shooting, low recoiling rifles I have shot in a long time. It's a beautiful hard hitting low recoil rifle.
Dang my bolt action mossberd maverick 13 bore with 3" sellior and ballot magnum slugs kicks more than that.
I love that little 425.

Bob is being a little generous in praise in regards to the 425's recoil!
I certainly wouldn't regard it as low recoil! :oops:
l regard any sub 9lb rifle firing a 400gn projectile at 2300fps as a handful...

Hey, we all feel recoil differently l guess - and maybe l'm a little biased, as my last memory was shooting 10-12 rounds out of that bloody thing of the bench in one session (n)

I'm glad you liked it Bob, it certainly is a nice practical rifle chambered for a fantastic cartridge.
Hopefully our next hunt will be a little longer and we can see how it performs on game (y)
