Or perhaps these numbers are only a guess and the real numbers can never be known.

Simply: not everyone goes to a doctor, hospital, clinic, or seeks professional medical attention, when they get sick.

I'm curious as to what the mortality rate for the Corona Virus will be, over the same time span as the seasonal flu. 4-5 months?

Six out of seven, or 86 percent of all COVID-19 cases were not reported in China before the implementation of travel restrictions, according to a study published in the journal Science and funded by the National Institute of Health. As posted by Fox this evening.

Assuming that study is reasonably accurate, it does potentially modify the death rate percentage. I still believe that we are addressing this particular pestilence exactly backwards. Because of those measures, we are already seeing in places like Florida and Berlin a backlash among younger members of our society who are starting to openly resent and ignore restrictions. This disease has given us a pretty precise target group - one that is significantly smaller than our population. I strongly believe "containment" should be supplanted with "protection" in order to keep the most vulnerable from being exposed to the general population. It wouldn't flatten the curve generally, but it would flatten it dramatically for those likely most in need of intensive medical care. And though it will be inconvenient for that group until a Tamaflu-like treatment or vaccine is approved, it would be a dramatically less inconvenient strategy for our economy than the one we are now following.

Working out of town this week, booked rooms for everyone on my project at a major chain hotel, was informed at check-in no continental breakfast due to Covid-19 concerns, no coffee prepared either; walked next door to a chain eatery for dinner and placed a take-out order and was asked to wait outside until ready. OK so here is the deal with the flu- it has been around forever and covered the entire globe for a long time, so the death totals are high, but that is why we have a vaccine for it, it's the best we can do. Now covid 19 is relatively new to humans and this is its first major outbreak, and it hasn't come close to fully spreading yet and we have no vaccine.... so let me put this in terms you might understand- say I decide I want to be a killer, so I go out and start shooting stuff, I've been at it for a full year and have claimed 500 lives, but I'm a crappy shot and it takes me 100 tries before I hit one and make a kill, so it has taken me 50k bullets to do this damage. Now you are a real go getter, so you go out and in a month have managed to kill 50 things and it has only taken you 500 bullets to do so..... so who is the more dangerous killer?
That is the reality we are facing currently. Yes there are unknowns in the numbers, yes it's a pain in the butt, however this is the best course of action to limit the spread. You think it's no big deal and for you it might not be. A big misconception is that it "only" kills old people (like that's no big deal) but the facts are that much younger people are requiring heavy medical intervention to survive- ie ventilators, and with out that they would all be dead. Once the hospitals are swamped those people will die. This is why it is so important to just take a step back, breath, relax and stay the hell home

I stopped in at Cabela's today to pick something up.

Walked past the ammo area and it looked like the paper goods section of Costco. There were shotgun shells and oddball stuff like 41mag and 30 40 Krag, plus a few normal things.

9 mm and 5.6 were nonexistent and no date for the back order to be filled.

There's no shortage by any means though. It's just like the TP situation. Hysteria so buy all the ammo just in case. Luckily I make sure I try to maintain a minimum of 1,000 rounds for each home defense caliber I own outside of the hall clearer in 12GA shotgun shells though still have probably 500 or so. I was curious though what academy and cabelas ammo sections looked like so thank you for the post and info!

I took mefloquine (another chlorquinolone, like chloroquine) about 20 years ago for malaria prophylaxis. I don't recall how it tasted, but I do recall it gave me very vivid night terrors.

That stuff sucks! I had daytime nightmares with it. Never again!

Are you a doctor? I have not heard that healthy young people have had to be on ventilators. I know of people that haven't even had symptoms that tested positive. One was an immune compromised cancer patient with no symptoms but he is having trouble getting an all clear test. His wife tested all clear and has been released. The both tested positive after a cruise but neither had symptoms. I know each person will be affected differently.

Not a doc, just following more than what is going on in the US and not on US media. It does seem that Korea has found large numbers in the 20-29 range who have no symptoms yet are very contagious, which is actually more dangerous than the obviously sick people in my opinion! But it is true that looking over the whole picture worldwide there is a large proporion of the icu patients who are mid 40s to 60 and were basically healthy before being infected. In Maine where I live they have been finding that several of the confirmed cases are co-infected with both Corona and actual influenza. It seems that once you get Corona your system is so compromised that if you come in contact with anything else you are likely to be in trouble

That, I have only heard coming out of China, so until other sources have been able to confirm it, I'd take it with a grain of salt. Problem is right now no one else has been recovered long enough anywhere else in the world to really look into it. They are claiming it's like always having a mild case of athzma there after....which would prove very problematic for many workers, but again there is nothing confirmed with that at this point that I know of, and I'm not claiming to be an expect by any means. We just all need use some common sense and look at the bigger picture. This is no longer about one man, the government or even the economy. People need to stop being selfish, listen, and follow guidelines. Just do the right thing and stop thinking about only yourselves.

There are a few articles here in the Netherlands and Belgium with young people and corona with heavily damaged lungs but it says it will eventually heal. But it is true that a lot of young people are getting hospitalised and need to be admitted to the ICU. Average time on a ventilator seems to be 4 weeks. If you want I could upload the article but it is in Dutch.

Kudos to you, and I will also say I'm jealous, believe it or not. I have a long way to go to hit 71 and am basically pretty healthy, but I swear I feel like I am 60 already, so if you don't feel it at 71 that is great! Congrats to you on that, and may you have many more such healthy years ahead of you!
