Big Bore Addiction Group

both the book and the mold came from http://www.castbulletengineering.com.au/

the guy i talked to (maybe the owner?) was very knowledgeable about large bore guns. he owns a 577 T-rex and uses his cast bullets for it. if you do a search for "woodleigh" on his sight, you will find the book.

i miss qouted him, he said he owned a 585 Nyati (not the 577 t-rex).

Might have to start a Left hand group with no regard to caliber.. Lefties unite!

I've been meaning to take good pictures of my two lefties and start a thread for months and just haven't done it. Only in the last couple of years have I had a left hand rifle. I always shot a right hand bolt before that.

I didn't know what I was missing, but now, I will never buy another of those wrong side guns!

matt had the same thing with my .458lott that there are photos of here somewhere back......we were in the luangwa in nyampala gma i think, and there was a girl with one of the people there who wanted a go with my lott after one of the men had a go. it weighs prob same as your rifle (mmm now i am going to have to go weigh it) and i asked if she was sure. she then fired it and said can i shoot it again .....which she did with no probs whatsoever. i think maybe with the light body weight they have less resistance and roll more with the recoil..............

@matt85 i weighed it on the kitchen scales and its 8.8lbs.

wow a 9 pound 458 Lott!

pretty sure id want a lott to be heavier then that!

I haven't weighed mine Matt, but it isn't much heavier than that and it is definitely lighter than my CZ 550, .375 H&H. let's put it this way. I'm thinking about taking my Lott, if I scope it, on my elk hunt in the mountains next year as a second rifle. Haven't considered the h&h.

flip side is obvious to this though. There is a reason I'm building up my tolerance to it!!! :) I know it is personal, but I don't want a field gun to be too heavy.

Royal if your gun only weighs that much then its no wonder you only shoot 4-5 shots in a sitting! my 416 RM is about perfect at just under 10.5 pounds scoped. the 585 HE ive got on order will way around 12 pounds and I plan to have my 505 Gibbs weigh 11 pounds.

9 pounds feels light for my 416 RM which means im damn sure its too light for a 458 Lott! I think id want a Lott to weigh around 11 pounds.

having said all that, I shoot my guns ALOT. ive been shooting around 100 rounds a month in guns chambered in cartridges of .416" or larger. add smaller calibers and im probably around 300 rounds a month. if I was shooten that much out of a 9 pound Lott id probably already have detached retinas!

a package showed up from mr. Hubel today containing brass and dies! so I took a crack at making a 585 HE cartridge:

750gr TSX over 140gr of IMR 4350 using Bertram brass and a Federal 215 primer. (velocity should hopefully be around 2050-2100 fps out of a 24" barrel)

And exactly what I meant by personal. :) If I was going to shoot mine as much as you do I would dang sure have a heavier rifle!!! But my primary reason for that rifle was to hunt with it. I will build up tolerance, but it will never be a "I want to go crack off a 100 rounds or more" gun for me.

Heck, when I got the .375 I was only good for 5-10 rounds on it. Now I doubt I will ever be able to shoot the Lott like I can the 375, but I expect to be able to shoot a lott more (pun intended) than I can today.

well if you can shoot a 9 pound Lott consistently and accurately then my 585 HE wont be much different. the 585 HE will still generate more recoil but it should feel much slower.

I have to admit, I want to shoot that HE!!!!

Don't know that I will ever want to own one, but I have to admit I'm intrigued.

Ohh, tell me more about that 585 HE when you have shot it a bit. Always interesting to hear a bit more about the more odd big bores. Have read most that hubel have been writing about it but not so much from other users.

Might be an option to the 550magnum I am considering having built! It's either that or trading my blaser r93 in for an r8 in 500jeff and .308...
But I really want to go over 600gr bullets, already have a 470ne for the 500gr ones!

I don't plan on doing anything special with the 585 HE so I might not be the best example. I intend to treat it like the 577 NE 3" In a 12 pound bolt gun.

Heh, I plan on shooting pigs over bait with my new build :) That and a backup gun to my 470ne.

Just any experience from the range etc when it comes to recoil, accuracy and if it is easy to load for is interesting!

Considering everything from the 550 magnum, 585HE, 600OK and similar. Since I am in the process of selling off some of my rifles to afford this build I got some time to decide on the caliber.

What really interested me in the 550 is the slow barrel twist, have had a 585 nyati almost torque out of my hands cause of the quick twist so I am a bit worried about that part of shooting some of the bigger bore rifles.

the slow twist wont change the torque, it will simply limit you to lighter bullets. faster twist rates stabilize heavier bullets better then slower twist rates. that torque is simply caused by a massive bullet rotating down the barrel at an ever increasing speed. the 600 OK has the worst reputation for turning in peoples hands at full speed! then again that shouldn't come as a surprise when you throwen a 900gr bullet at 2300fps!

if you run your rifles at standard NE velocities you shouldn't run into the issues.

tonight I fired up the old lead furnace and tried out my new .585" mold from CBE. first, I have to say im very impressed with the quality of this mold! the cutting was done perfectly and the fit and finish is excellent. it did take me a little bit to get it to start throwing proper bullets since I its been a long time since ive done any casting but once I got it going things went smoothly.

the mold casts excellent looking 637gr bullets from wheel weight lead which measure .584"-.585" which is perfect! here is a picture I took of one of them next to a 750gr Barnes TSX:

now I just need to figure out how to lube them and then start working on a load.

Nice looking bullet. I have a 585HE ordered as well I'm curious to see how CEB raptors and solids work for it.

i have never got those CEB bullets to shoot well in any of my rifles but maybe you will have more luck then i did. for me its always been Barnes, Swift, and Speer. ive been playing with Nosler in my deer rifle and so far the results have been decent but not great. i wish Speer would put out an inexpensive Hot-Cor bullet for the .585" or the .505" as ive always had good luck getting their bullets to shoot.

Amon458, you and i will have to share load data once we get things going.

Matt that sounds like a good plan to me and I wish North fork made bullets in .585 as for cheap bullets go for it hawk has the lowest jacketed bullet I've seen.
