Big Bore Addiction Group

I don't know what it is about shooting pigs with rediculously large things that is so fun but it is. I love to watch them vaporize like shooting prairie dogs with a 300wm. Maybe it's because they cause me a couple thousand dollars in crop damage a year or maybe I'm just a little off but it's loads o fun.

A big bore only pig hunt at your place would be an absolute hoot!!!!

Got anyplace where you can set up a feeder about 500 yards away from the blind? That would make Cody's BMG real interesting! :W Cal 50:

Ya. That's no problem. You can shoot from the front porch of the lodge either 500 or 1000 yardish as there are two feeders visible at those ranges.

The beauty of hunting at my place is it can be as up close and personal or as far and precise you want it to be.

I've had a few clients that were competitive distance shooters. One shot a turkey at 1208 yards and a hog at a little over 800. It was pretty impressive to watch. Both were 1 shot clean kills. Another set up on the porch and was shooting water bottles at over a 1000 yards. He walked me through it and I was able to actually hit at 854 meters with a tricked out 243 that I have. I proally couldn't do it again unless I had someone dope the wind, figure the ballistics, and set the turret for me but it was pretty cool. I managed to hit it on the 3rd shot but the first two were pretty dang close too. I am NOT a long range shooter by any means but it was neat to have someone walk me through it and manage to get even me to hit at those ranges. Sorry Matt, I got us a little off topic.

Don't worry Gizmo,

Matt will be along shortly to tell us what the drop is on a .505 Gibbs with a 500 grain tsx at 1000 yards.

The only thing you may have done wrong was mention a .243, at any distance! ;)

Lol right. Woulda been a little difficult to shoot my 416 at that distance plus I'm pretty sure it would have broke my collarbone shooting it prone like that.

Yeah, I'm thinking that my .375 H&H is my limit for prone. It isn't bad, but I do imagine that a .416 might be just a little bit snappy!!!

I love it! I shot this piggie at 8 feet in the brush as he came out with my 500 Jeffery. Shot him with a 570g TSX between the eyes (a little to the right), demolished the neck vertebrae, then penetrated until it exited out of his right ham leaving a desert plate sized exit would. When we gutted him just liquid came out. Lost a lot of pork, but the chops and cutlets we got were good ... Lots of fun ...

a 505 Gibbs using a 525gr TSX at 2300fps would have to shoot 83 inches high at 100 yards to be on at around 1000 yards. the bullet would be traveling at around 850 fps at 1000 yards which is still enough to generate 840 ft/lb of energy. you would be shooting it like a field howitzer but it would smoke anything in North America at that distance.

243 at 930yds hmmmmm! How many miles did he have to aim above the target?
505 Gibbs using the Barnes 505gr TSXfb at 2300fps will drop 60' at 100yds but still have enough energy to kill you according to the RCBS Load V3 program

I don't remember how many clicks it was exactly but it was a bunch. If memory serves me correct it was like 2 1/2 to 3 complete turns on my scope. It was by far the longest shot I've ever taken and I highly doubt I will ever shoot that far again as I am not a distance guy. I think he set me up to make the shot to show me it is possible if you know what your doing. I however do not know what I'm doing when it comes to long range shooting. It was pretty fun though.

The 2nd edition of ammo and ballistics that I have shows the load we shot dropping 300 inches at 1000yards soooo whatever that would equal out to at roughly 930 yards. For you load gurus its a federal load with a 100 grain Sierra game king btsp w/ a ballistic coefficient of .471@2960fps. It a factory load that I shoot outta that gun. I'm pretty terrible at math so if any of you care your are more than welcome to figure it out.

For the record a 300 winmag loaded with a 180gr federal factory round @31oofps trophy bonded bear claw ballistic coefficient of .36 drops 53.3 inches more at the same range according to the book. That surprises me actually. The same load w/ a 150gr bullet and ballistic coefficient of .334@3280fps drops 33.7 inches more. Sorry Matt

Gizmo, About a year ago my son set up his long distance Remington .308 and scope for me to shoot 600 yards, by far the longest distance I ever shot a sporting rifle. I was able to hit a steel plate consistently from a bench! It was all about having the right scope and knowing how to use it! Probably won't shoot that far again unless it's with him on his rifle.

the 505 Gibbs using a 525gr TSX at 1000 yards has about the same energy as the 44 Rem Mag does at the muzzle.

Reza Call me any time you want to talk about Elephant. hunting and CMS.
I've hunted two Elephant with CMS.
In 13 African safari's and an equal number of North American hunts, BUZZ is the best guide I have ever hunted with.
