Big Bore Addiction Group

Is that the Safari "Classics" or the regular "Magnum". It seems to indicate in the heading that it is the Classics but all I can make out id Magnum on the receiver.

I'll re-check when I get my 505 back, but I think it says Classic on the receiver. On the CZ site they have about a $400 difference in list price.

Not any kind of classic but for someone who needs an effective big bore on a budget, I would look at this. My personal budget over .40 DG bolt gun preference would be a Winchester M70 in 416 Rem Mag for about $500 more but if you want a sturdy gun in a quick handling package that can effectively take any game on the planet and stand up to not only everything Africa can throw at it but also places like Alaska... This could fill the bill. And with a scope like a VXR 1-4 illuminated, you would have a competent package pretty cheap.... Someone buy this before I have another 416 I don't need!

I have the same addiction. It started when I was 18 or 19. I used to work in a gun store many years ago. One of the owners asked me if I had any large calibre rifles? The largest at that point I had was a. 338 Win Mag. We had just started to bring in BRNO rifles. They had a couple of 270's, 30/06's, 375 H&H's and 458 Win Mags in the first shipment. We sold most of them except for one 375 H&H which had really ugly stock colour. He asked me if I wanted it. I wasn't able to pay for it right away and took a bit of doing. Being in my late teens I didn't have a grasp of something called savings. I did spendings real good! After a couple of months I had it paid for. I stripped the stock of its ugliness and refinished it. It turned out real nice. I still have it today and it still shoots awesome! Used to use it for groundhogs...heh...heh. That same owner has been my friend for 30+ years now. He has "introduced" me to a slew of 40 cal rifles of which I have a 416 Rigby, 450 Rigby, 404 Jeffery and....????? not sure of my next big bore calibre addiction....maybe a 50 calibre something. So yes I'm addicted to big bores. Am I happy about it....you betcha!

ive never been overly impressed with the 416 Ruger cartridge or that ridiculous muzzle break they put on their rifles chambered in it. the 416 Ruger has even less case capacity then the already limited 416 Rem Mag. also, unless your a hand loader your limited to Hornady ammunition which ive never been impressed with either.

I agree with you Matt, the .416 Ruger is definitely "capacity challenged".
Yeah, and that abomination hanging off the noisy end...:E No:

Can't disagree with you guys on any of those points. But if you look at standard factory (yes Hornady) loads, the ballistics are near identical to the 416 Rem Mag and Rigby. (I know the Rigby can do almost anything for hand loaders!)

However, for a suitable gun at a very low cost and caliber to take elephant, lion, Buffalo, etc. And stand up to AK type weather and even salt water (and not be out much if you did beat it up) to effectively down a big bruin (although I would prefer the 375 version for the extra range it offers). One would be hard pressed to do better at that price. And Ruger customer service is very good, from my experience anyway. (not sure if that extends to second owners?)

For someone on a budget or looking for one, I just thought to point it out might be of service....

As for that damned muzzle brake... My left ear may never stop ringing from the bad one time experience I had with the 375 version! I'm fully with you.. The good news is that gun comes with a tread protector and after it goes to AK, it might be permanently corroded on because the brake is going to come off long before that gun goes hunting again!

I would like to see someone shoot a hog with that 950 JDJ. Something tells me that would be impressive to watch. While I have plenty of hogs I'm damn sure not shooting that behemoth.

you would have to set up some kind of ambush to use the 950 JDJ on a pig. the guns too heavy to carry or even shoulder.

Gizmo,
I can bring a 50 BMG with some 750 gr AMax if you want to shoot a hog when I come out there. A frontal shot is spectacular! After you shoot one we can call ya the Baconator!

A 750 grain A Max sounds like a lot of rapidly expanding lead! I want to see the photos and you guys with your trophy!

I wouldn't want to be the poor bastard who had to carry it let alone shoot it.....well actually being the twit I am I'd shoot it!

I know.... Moth drawn to the flame!!!

I'd think "what kind of an idiot would shoot that thing???" Then right after I pulled the trigger I'd be thinking "well, that answers that...." :)

one of my friends also ordered a 585 HE rifle but instead of a DG gun like mine, he went with a 30" heavy barrel and extra weight for the gun. his plan is to shoot it at its full potential around 2800 fps. imagine hitting a pig with a .585" 750gr bullet at 2800fps!

Nice! Pulled pork

Shot a groundhog at around 25yds with a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby using a 400gr RN factory round. Just popped up beside me as I was shooting tree stumps (just got the rifle so I wanted to shoot it). Nothing left of the "hog" except the bladder and a really long deep trench where the bullet had happily traveled!
I have read mixed reviews of the 416 Rem, 416 Weatherby (ouch!), and 416 Ruger. Some seem to like it but the majority seem to regress back to the tried & true 416 Rigby.

Reza Call me any time you want to talk about Elephant. hunting and CMS.
I've hunted two Elephant with CMS.
In 13 African safari's and an equal number of North American hunts, BUZZ is the best guide I have ever hunted with.
