I had a .416 Rigby Mauser that weighed in at 9.3 pounds......thats too much with full loads...o_O

:S Agree:

Would choose a M14/G3/FN FAL over those popguns though..

I completely agree and may get scolded by Matt again for not keeping to calibers that can give you the what for.....

But when we drove past a whole hillside covered in baboons, After they woke me up an hour early several days in a row and scared off a 50 inch cape kudu in a river valley (or so said the tracker who saw it running), I could have had a great time with my Sig 556 and a couple 60 round mags!

I have seen that many of the outfitters allow you to take all of the baboons you want!

Yea it is just a matter of hitting the damned things as they are running through the bushes!

Seekers of a .404 Jeffery.......Just saw one on Gunbroker. Ruger #1, with the bids currently at just over $1700. Three more days to bid.

I've never shot anything bigger than a .458 WM. It was certainly a thumper.

My dream guns would be a Westley Richards Double in .500 NE, and , or, a custom built .450 Rigby, and a .505 Gibbs.

Hopefully my lottery tickets will pay off someday.

In reference to dealing with recoil; the 2 centavos I might ad to the other members already excellent advice is that with hard kickers, I place my rifle butt slightly onto my pectoral/chest muscle in other words, slightly out of the regular "shoulder's shooting pocket" which every beginning shooter was probably taught to use.
The chest muscle seems to have fewer nerves and veins to crush and therefore less pain and less broken blood vessels / black & blue tenderness after a decent shooting session.

Have any of you guy's installed a mercury recoil reducer in the butt stock. Just wondering how effective they are, since they add weight, and have the ability to reduce recoil.

Well Brent I would say it has a much greater chance of reducing recoil than of anyone winning the lottery!! LOL

I have one in the stock of my 505 Gibbs but have never shot it with out as it came that way.. So I have no comparison. But on that gun, if it helps even a bit, I don't want to be without it! I am intrigued by the ones that go in the forearm. I think that would help with muzzle jump, but not sure how much extra weight I want to carry if I hunt with that gun?

I would say it still kicks like a mule, but that would wrong, having actually been kicked by a mule, the mule hurt more;)

Very true about the lottery! LOL.

I have never seen the one for the forearm, but I am intrigued now that you mention it.

Kilimanjaro rifles in Montana provides a ,505 Gibbs with a barrel specifically tailored for those big North Fork 650 grain bullets. Some serious horsepower for DG.

Yea try a cookie jar rather than the lottery;)

Oh man! Now I am feeling inadequate with my 600 grain Woodleigh's I planned to use on Cape Buffalo......... If I get the gun back from the shop on time! And if it feeds properly so I am comfortable taking it.

The R8 Recoil Reduction System was developed for thin rifle stocks without a large enough area in the stock to drill a hole to accept the standard recoil reduction units. This system can be installed in the butt stock, or under the barrel on a bolt action rifle. The size of the R8 allows a smaller 9/16" or 5/8" hole to be drilled in a thin rifle stock, or a pocket milled out to fit in the barrel channel. Mounting under the barrel is recommended only for bench rest shooting and hunting guns. The R8 Recoil Reduction System also works well as a stock mounted unit for shotguns with thin stocks.

NOTE: The R8 unit must be mounted solidly so it will not move when the gun is fired.

Nice.! I imagine those 600gr woodleighs are an absolute sledgehammer on Buff.

Somewhere on the internet I saw a custom double rifle that had 2 of those Breako's installed in the butt stock. 1 long one, and and 1 medium. Probably adding a pound and a half to the weight.

i havent tried using a mercury tube in my guns but i cant imagine they make too much more of a difference then just adding weight. if anythin i think simply adding lead to the stock works better because you can add more lead then you can mercury.

I had a gunsmith tell me had added a spearing decoy lead weight under the barrel in the fore end. Similar to the explanation to install the smaller mercury tube designed for that spot.

He also told me how he got tired of guys telling him how they never met a gun with too much recoil... So he rechambered a Ruger #1 to a 460 Weatherby Mag for them to shoot...

oh ive met a few guns that had too much recoil! a Ruger #1 that weighed 6 pounds chambered in 45-70 with hot loads of a 500gr bullet at around 1950fps. that little gun would give a 458 Lott a run for its money in terms of recoil. a Ruger #1 in 460 WBY would be outright unshootable!!!

on a side note: i would be willing to try the 460 WBY Ruger #1.

I've never been kicked in the face by a mule, but shooting a Ruger #1 in .460 Weatherby would be a close approximation.

note: at 9 pounds the 416 RM is still shootable but expect fairly violent recoil that takes some getting used to. I often shoot the gun without a scope when shooting with other people to prevent them from getting hit by the scope.
I can see how that could go bad. I put a long eye relief scope on it so it's unlikely, not impossible mind you, to scope yourself. I actually went and bought another eotech to put on it. I liked the idea of using that for the hunt but I didn't think about those damned integrated Ruger bases. So.... I've either gotta find a converter that will fit it or maybe it will fit my CZ when it comes in?

to date my 416 RM has scoped three people... I swear that scope is out to get people!

Those M70 416 Rem Mags are pretty light weight in the end. Comparing mine to the Ruger RSM 416 Rigby, huge difference in the amount od steel in the barrel. and the balance point is way farther forward on the Ruger. The Ruger weighs almost 1 1/2 pounds more. Once I get a better recoil pad and extend the LOP a bit and mount a scope, I fully expect that RSM to be darn right civilized to shoot..... But I though the Winchester was plenty heavy when carrying it 10 miles up and down hills, etc. chasing elephants!
