Best Looking Safari Shirt?

I have a couple of Willis & Geiger shirts and the Hemingway safari jacket, I wish they were still in business.

Very old thread, but couldn't resist. Westley Richards make some of the finest guns and rifles, and clothing to match. Quilted shoulder patch. Long sleeves are a must in the winter thorn scrub and keep the sun off. Here is their safari shirt, extreme quality.

I frequently use the bullet pouches when doing speed shoots on the range. Comes in khaki, brown and dark green.

Yes. It isn't about fancy dressing it is about correct attire for a safari, a great privilege that, and only right to pay respect to the whole experience and its traditions. A bit of spice adds to the whole flavour. Westley Richards shirts and longs, Courteneys, a Patrick Mavros belt perhaps and a hand crafted knife. Hats in Africa keep the sun off the ears and neck as well as shading the peripheral vision. Add a Ruger No1, or a Kimber Caprivi, maybe a Rigby Big Game, whatever does that Buff or Eland due respect and you are ready.

Somehow I think the the procession of human beings marching towards them may be more of an issue than the buckle.

Not to distract from the OP’s question but does anyone have a perspective on their favorite Safari shorts?

Unless I am hunting a different type of game at the tennis club, I am done with shorts. ;)

After picking up embedded pebbles and pieces of twigs from my knees and recovering from where a piece of rock had bruised a bone I said enough. Long cotton/canvas pants only. I might change my mind if the terrain is such that I am not expected to crawl.

But, this is what I used to use for Safaris, cotton/canvas so it can be ironed each day.

Yes, longs for me too, not the thin flimsy things either, but the canvas ones as tanks says. Its not just to keep the grass seeds out, but ticks, and of course mozzies around the fire at night. I pack three sets of everything and the camp laundry means there is always a crisp set available.

Yes, if you wear shorts, make sure they're shorts!
Not those daft half long things hanging around your knees that are more akin to youths and skateboards.

I always wear shorts when hunting. Thorns don't get snagged in material and although you end up with scratches, you're likely to get them even through long trousers unless you wear heavy, thick material which I would find too damn hot under the African sun.

I wear Cabelas trail shorts with the 5" inseam, I've picked them up in the US, had folk buy them for me when visiting and found some on ebay too.

Hard wearing, practical and comfortable.

I wish I could find the rugby style shorts that PHs seem to wear that fit slightly better.

I dislike baggy clothes and the more material flapping around, the more snags you will find.

Let's see we covered shirts, pants and shorts. What's left?

Oh, yeah. Don't forget the proper hat.

They are a bit pricey, but Borsalino Marco hats are well worth it. I have different flavors of their Fedoras for every occasion. I have the one in the pic in tan as well for hunting.

Looks like a nice hat. But as you will have seen I am taken by pith helmets. Super light, airy, ventilated, adjustable. It doesn't sit on your head, rather there is a webbing inside. Honestly this is the most comfortable hat I own. Those old timers knew what to wear in the African sun. Even my grandson has one.

I use Kuhl shorts. Very tough and not baggy.

It looks like a fine hat, but it's felt. Personally, once I am moving and/or it is above 60, heck 55 if sunny it would be drenched in sweat and off my head. So aside from my cotton or silk ivy caps I own a Brent Black Panama https://www.brentblack.com/safari-edition-panama-hats.html#kentuckySmithSE . I Tested the Mombasa Safari style in the Miami sun this winter. Kept my bald head shaded and cool.

Aha, for the summer, not when hunting, I wear their Panama hats. But I guess I am used to their felt and full beaver fur hats as it doesn't bother me.

The owners started a new company. The link on post 87 is to their new site. Seems to be pretty good quality.

Left to right in order of preference: Melville & Moon pithy, Stetson safari, Westley Richards safari, Barmah. The pithy is by far the best, those old boys knew what they were doing.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
