.458 Mannlicher Shonauer

Thank you kindly Bebo, I think this rifle will give me a lot of joy....

Updating:
Maybe a good idea is to upload a few photos regarding the rotary magazine that makes this rifle different than the Mauser action...this was the first time I took the rifle apart since I got it...as you can see the inside of the magazine is not cleaned up yet....cleaning will commence as soon as I completed the photo session...

Hallo Steve, thank you kindly, I enjoy taking photos of my rifles a lot....rifles are fascinating items....

Very interesting, indeed. Is the magazine in steel ?
Please would you put another close up shot : when you're loading the magazine with only one cartridge ? (y)

I will do it tomorrow...the magazine is consisting out of aluminium and the rotatory spindle is steel

I'm trying to understand how it works .. but today I've the flu ... Maybe that's the reason why I don't understand ..

I'm not a gun geek in that I don't know a lot about many of the older guns, nor do I know a great deal about the mechanics of rifles in general.

That being said, this gun is SO cool and I have throughly enjoyed this thread and all of the pictures. Thanks for the latest!!!

Very nice rifle! Although I should think the recoil is fairly hefty. I have two later model Steyr M rifles, one in .30-06, the other is 7x64, the Professional model. I really like them both and they are both accurate, in particular the 7x64.

I did get hold of one of the greats regarding elephant /buffalo hunting, Richard Harland: The Hunting Imperative (I can enthusiastically recommend this book to any one who is an avid reader of hunting books) He describes the rifle when he looked at it for the first time ...echoing my sentiments when I saw this rifle for the first time...I will be spending more time with this rifle next year when time permits..I really would like to learn to shoot this rile fast and accurate

My friend has one of these .458's that was custom made for his dad in LHD.
The day I felt that rifle I knew what I wanted! He makes it worse by having a 9.3 x 62 in the same make which my old also German made 9.3 cannot compare despite the workmanship on mine.
Mannlicher action rules!

Richard Harland suggested I rather need to make the original stock fit me than build a new stock...I think I am just going to do that...I will never sell this rifle..it will go to my son...he can decides what he want to do with it come the time.....the length of pull will fit him when he is grown up...

Members, some update regarding the .458 Win Mag Mannlicher Schoenauer, I re-load with 420 gn cast bullets .gas checks..I will be shooting the rifle this coming weekend at a BASA ,big bore shooting day..this will be my first time ever shooting a competition with the .458 Win Mag Mannlicher Schoenauer...I really am going to enjoy shooting this old classic...I shot four rounds today at twenty five meters indoor shooting range..first two bullets in the bull other two missing with five millimeters..open sights, v- express ..it is really accurate..will give some feedback this weekend...maybe uploading a video of the shoot...

Gert, your rifle is a real gem. I read Richard Harlands book "Ndlovu"...the best book about elephant hunting I ever saw. He really praise those M-S rifles..!

I have but two old M-S rifles, a mod. 1910 in 9,5x57mm, standard take down made before 1924 and a lovely 6,5x54mm made by charles Lanchaster in 1906.

Workmanship on these rifles is indeed very high..
