.270 vs 7*57 Which is the best???

I find the .270 to be oddly boring. I have owned several over the years, but never hunted with any of them…always found myself reaching for something else when it came time to choose the rifle for the hunt. I’ve never been able to figure out why it hold no appeal for me because I use similarly boring cartridges all the time (7x57, 30-06, 7 mag). No 270’s currently in my stable, but lots of other boring rifles quietly wait their turn.
@m457109
If jack O'Connor didn't praise the 270 and beat it to death with high praise it would never have got off the ground. It won't do anything the 280 and old ought 6 won't do as good or better

And let's not forget Elanore took a bunch of game with the 7X57 ;) She was a pretty accomplished hunter in her own right.

Better? for what, I have both, not much different except the 270 is more powerful, shoots flatter , brass and bullets are easier to find, even in Africa and the North Pole end of story, which one is newer Id be suspicious of a rifle with no blue left..I like both calibers along with a 30-06, 308, and lesser calibers. de[pends on what you are using it on... ,
This caliber vs that caliber can be a slippery road,,

Bob,
Your right the 270 wont do anymore than the 06, 280 7x57, then again the 06,280 ,7x57 wont do anything the ,270 wont do, Jack knew that. :)

The 270 Win and 7x57 are virtual twins ballistically, the 7x57 supposedly has an edge with heavier bullets.
The 30-06 has about 20% more power due to the larger caliber bullet.
Interesting as I’ve often read the 7mm-08 and 7x57 being ballistic twins. Not so much the .270 but not disputing it as I have never had one.
I have the 7-08, .280a.i. and now the wife has a 7x64 that I hope to be testing by the end of the week.

But as @RayAtkinson has said .270 is more readily available.

The 7mm-08 is close with light bullets. Go to 160 or 175 gr bullets and the 7mm-08 can’t keep up. The bullet takes up too much case capacity. Nothing wrong with the 7mm-08, but like many newer cartridges, it is a solution to a problem that didn’t exist.

IMO the .270 and 7x57 are different animals. The .270 comes into its own on long distance shots at deer sized game with the 130 gr bullet. The 7x57 sets itself apart with 175 gr bullets at short to medium range. The penetration of a 175 gr Swift A-Frame has to be seen to be truly appreciated. The 7x57 can manage long range with 145 gr bullets, and the .270 can get by in the bush with 150 gr bullets, but each is a compromise. Two great cartridges with different sweet spots.

Hello, My wife and I hunted with Marius 2 years ago. He fit us into his schedule after a different outfitter "bailed" on us. He was always very good with communications and although we didn't end up meeting him personally, he called us multiple times during our hunt to make sure things were going well. We were very happy with him.

Reach out to the guys at Epic Outdoors.

They will steer you right for landowner tags and outfitters that have them.

I have held a membership with them for years and they are an invaluable resource.

Way better that asking random people on the internet...WAY better

Skydiver386,

Did you ever find your 30-06 CZ550? I own a fairly solid conditioned one, if you wanted to talk.
