What cartridge have you thought about the most, but never owned a rifle in it?

The following is straight from Norma about their ammo:

Dear Vince, don’t vary you are right.

In Europe we have similar rules we have the CIP-rules this is very close mostly identical to the SAAMI who you have.

We also produce since decades ago ammunition for the USA market so we must also follow the pressure levels

According to SAAMI-rules.

PS. (We don’t have better stronger rifles as you have in USA it’s same construction equal know how from the engineers).

Christian,

Ammo makers worldwide do not adhere to the same specification. In the US SAAMI specs are used. In Europe CIP specs are used. You are correct that Norma does not use SAAMI specifications. They use CIP standards which I believe are tougher. For instance the temperature that Norma tests their rounds is 100 Celcius which 212 F. SAAMI only requires 60 to 80 F.

I have shot and chrono'd Norma ammo in the past. My biggest complaint is the low velocity. I was told this was done to stay within CIP specifications.

Have YOU actually bought, shot and chrono'd 8 by 57 ammo from Norma that was over-pressured?
Very interesting, I didn't know that. Maybe it isn't quite as bad as I painted it out too be, but I still don't want to use it, call me a scaredy cat or whatever.

No, I have never used Norma 8X57 ammo, but I have read bad stuff before on the internet about pressure issues. Then again, those complaints were on the internet, people can say anythuing they want to on the I-net.

7x57 in a pre war sporter, 338-06 in a remington pump rifle

.470NE for me.

I've no reason for one, can't afford one, but what a round! History, style, awesome rifles. In a side by side double of around 10lb with express sights for 50,100,150 I think, preferably by H&H, but a Chapuis would do at a more affordable price point.

Also 7x64 I suppose and a classically styled stutzen in 8mm Mauser might be a laugh as well.

7x65R. The only firearm I currently wish to acquire is a slim, stylish German kipplauf stalking rifle in 7x65R. Blaser K95, Merkel K3 etc. The cartridge and the style of rifle are made for each other.

9.3x74R/7x57R African Bergstutzen 24 inch
7x65R/6.5x57R African Bergstutzen 26 inch
12ga/12ga

3 barrel set O/U with QD scope mounts and ghost ring back up sights..

3 barrel sets/5 calibers......

Here in the UK we have to apply for each calibre and have a very good reason to have said caliber which makes it hard to have a gun just because you fancy having it. The 2 guns/cartridges I am looking at to go with what I have is the 338 win mag and a 404 Jeffery. I think I can justify having those, along with what I have, without having the police thinking one can do for both.

What I think about the most now are:
- A nice, bolt action 17WSM
- a fast 7mm or 30cal single shot, break action, mountain rifle - can’t decide which calibre which is why I haven’t ordered it yet
- 404 Jeffery barrel for my R8
- 577NE double

For me just a 8x68s in a mauser 66 action ...

I would say .22 Hornet and .404 Jeffery. If I'm being honest, I have absolutely no need for either, but they are intriguing nonetheless.

Maybe a .270, it is highly regarded in Australia, America, just never had one .
I think a close second may be a .338wm, a Bear rifle to be specific. I my never hunt Bear but alongside Lion it would be an making trophy. And I could make space in the safe for a Bear rifle, all-weather stainless of sorts.

Both are versatile , both have merits.

I don’t buy wildcat chamberings, only for simplicity and availability. I reload but some cases get pricey.

I met an Aussie who had like 52 African trophies from 26 trips, retired businessman. He only ever used a .270 and .338 for his plains game safaris. Just coincidental to my thoughts he was not into the big cats.

A 7x57 would be nice, like. Custom take down of days gone by but that’s just because I like rifles and that sort of thing has some Appeal of. Traditional Safari rifle look to me.

Something in the flat shooters like a .25-06 or 6.5x55 if I think to hard but then people debate the merits of a .280 and 7x64, for hunting.

And if Bob Nelson could influence my decision a .35Whelen would suffice for bear and many other critters.

I’ve always owned .458WM’s (5 of them) but lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the .416RM - especially in the Winchester M70.
It would never replace my beloved .458 but it’d certainly make a nice companion!

In the most boring of fashion a .308
Just received email my used brno 802 i purchased is at ffl buddy's place I pick up tomorrow

Based on the rifle calibres which I have actually SEEN being used , during my 10 year career as a professional shikaree in Nagpur, India :

> 9.3×74 mm Rimmed
> .476 Westley Richards

Based on the rifle calibres which I have merely read about :
> 8 mm Remington magnum
> .505 Gibbs

For me it was the .270 Winchester, probably because I grew up reading Jack O’Connor’s column in Outdoor life when I was young. 45 years later I bought a Ruger no.1 in .270 Weatherby. Close but no cigar.

Might be off the wall, but every since I saw Quigley, Down Under, I have wanted a 45/110. Probably won't ever own one but that would be a great round for bison.

270 Weatherby Magnum in a Ruger #1. I see one pop up for sale every now and again and ponder. Laser beam flat shooting rifle that would work marvelously for caribou, sheep or goat. But honestly my 30-06s and 7mm-08 has done the trick nicely for the sheep and several caribou so it would be a safe queen more than anything, so I pass.

.465 H and H.
