Thoughts on Tuskless Hunting

I’ve raised Axis deer my whole adult life. They are always lactating and/or pregnant. We still have to hunt them or we would be overpopulated. Like most of the southern elephant range is.
Same with Muntic hunting here in the uk. You dont want to shoot the ones that are not pregnant as the chances are that you will leave a fawn to starve.
Roe and Fallow doe season we also take when pregnant each only up to a set stage in there cycle then it just gets to unplesant.
Its not fun but a necessity in population control.

Questions: (great topic btw)

1. Which countries offer tuskless ele hunt, besides Zimbabwe?

2. What are the options for tuskless bull?
I was told recently that the tuskless gene is pretty much unique to Zimbambwe, they are not common elsewhere

I have been following several of recent campaigns against hunters, and all have been started with personal photos with trophies posted on internet.

Somebody could make proper research once.... but I dont think that in pre-internet era, there was so big number of anti hunting campaigns? pre 1995 antihunting campaigns?
I suspect you are correct and what there was would not become global. Perhaps we as a hunting community need to adapt a little more to the nuances of the internet era.

And term " hidden ara " its a term i came across a while ago.

It means someone aint who they say there. Can be many things ,someone who is either volunteering information over to Mosleyists or are blackmailed by them.

Or a Mosleyists into the hunting business to disrupt it ,under guise of helping and supporting it.

Thanks for that HankBuck.

I appreciate your opinion and I agree with you that yes, I am definitely from another era.
But in spite of my antique status LoL, the fact remains that, our global hunting culture has a huge public relations problem.
And, it’s clearly gaining momentum.
For one example, more airlines are now refusing to transport taxidermy items.
This PR problem of ours, to me seems fixable but, apparently many of us are either not perceiving the growing threat to our beloved outdoor activities or, perhaps just shrugging about it.

Due to my advanced years, I presume that now within my shortass remaining lifetime, the cracked nuts of this world will not be able to totally shut down foreign hunters from traveling to Africa and other popular global hunting areas.
However, they might have a real chance some day at ending what we love, unless we can get the world wide, non-hunting public to stop leaning toward the fanatic anti-hunter culture and start leaning toward us for a change.

Sorry, rant over.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.
Velo you are correct in that Hunting has an “image problem” and it is almost Worldwide - and growing every year. Posting hunting photos on the internet is used by some groups to attack the sport of hunting and therefore gives these groups fresh ammo to use against all hunters and all types of hunting.
I’m not optimistic that Hunting and Hunter’s “Image” can ever be restored to something accepted and respectable by the majority of the World population. Trophy Hunting is Not wrong and has nothing to do with the recent negative connotation associated with it - “Trophy” hunting was just the easy target for Animal Rights and Anti Hunters to launch a campaign against. Groups like PeTA and HSUS are extremely well organized and well funded - equal too or better then the NRA or SCI...plus their message appeals to a far greater population of the Planet AND the “younger generation”. PeTA researches and conducts “polls” to identify what campaign appeals to their base, what “message” resonates and most importantly - will raise the most $$. They make smart decisions and give large contributions to Politicians that will advance their agenda, they give publicity to failing Hollywood celebrities - helping to revitalize their careers, in exchange for them to pose naked with a baby seal or wear underwear made from recycled plastic etc.. PeTA and HSUS have No interest in the welfare of animals, if you research PeTA they don’t even believe in pet ownership - PeTA compares it to “slavery” but most of PeTA’s Members don’t realize that. Convincing older people (over age 40) that Hunting is a natural part of the eco system and benefits most wildlife is very achievable...But the younger generations that can no longer differentiate between a Boy & a Girl and are confused about what public restroom to use — they will NEVER be able to evaluate facts and make a rational decision....they will do “what they are told”. WOW - I’m even more jaded and pessimistic then I thought!!!

And with ara groups doing terror attacks especially in Britain led by their colonial masters , its strange thinking Britain have forgotten all about Mau Mau, The Troubles with the eruption once more.

Common misconception about anti hunting being a new phenomenon; but consider this.

When the boat carrying Teddy Roosevelts Safari party cast off in New York harbor, anti hunting protestors were standing on the dock screaming as they left.

This has been an issue, and like Communism, they are chopping at our sport little by little. The problem also is our society, and the pussification of our youth. The youth is being brain washed and by the time they are adults, all this gender garbage will be the norm, and hunting will be seen as some barbaric act.

BTW, @Backyardsniper, you sir have been extremely informative, and this post is one of those very informative ones. Thank you for putting the time and effort into something this useful! I appreciate what you've done here. (y) (y)

Any reference to this? Would be interesting to check.

Two other pre-internet hunting bans were: India and Kenya, in seventies, influenced by nationalism, religion and politics.

Antihunting is not news, but in modern times they get wings

Thank you. You are also absolutely correct about the pussification of America. It is truly a shame!

Agreed, there has been anti hunting sentiments for over 100 years — it’s the number & percentage of people that are Anti Hunting today that has increased AND the number of Hunters has “decreased”.... This has created a much more hostile environment then hunters have ever faced before, the internet and 24/7 news has also added to problems faced by hunters. I’m confident that these current hostilities will not curtail my enjoyment of the sport nor will they end the enjoyment my children have - but I believe my grandchildren and beyond will Not enjoy the sport with to the same extent. A common behavioral trait that I think works against Hunters is their very nature or personality - Hunters are often people that enjoy some solitude, are self reliant, don’t force their views on others and don’t care if everyone else hunts or not. Hunters by nature are rarely radical activists and accept that hunting is not for everyone - they expect to be treated with similar respect and as long as others do Not try FORCE their anti hunting views on them - hunters are content to quietly enjoy their sport. Anti’s - and ANTI is the perfect description those radically opposed to hunting - these people enjoy being “against” something and the actual cause the fight for is less important then the fight —- they like the confrontation, the battle, the objective is less important. Lots of good people good ideas are being shared on this forum and I like the discussions and differing points of view.

I have my own opinions and comments but very few answers

We are NOT enjoying the sport to the same extent compared to our parents and grandparents already. Hunting a rhino in the wild is no longer possible. Ditto for Jaguar, tiger etc..

I'm a big fan of tuskless hunting. It's not detrimental when done right or PHs wouldn't be supporting it. I've done it and will do it again. I don't agree that most of the tuskless killed are pregnant but that's another subject. If you have considered hunting tuskless, please jump in. I haven't met any client who has that has bad feelings about it or regretted it.

Dear Good Fellows,

I apologize to the OP and all others for derailing this thread.

At the end of the day, regardless of hunting elephant cow or bull, deer buck or doe, etc., I believe the haters will hate.
They are bullies and inflicting pain is what bullies love, in this case it is psychological and intellectual pain.
Bullies hate their victims for fighting back and they hate their victims for not fighting back.

The anti-hunters are from my observations, pretty much 100% not the type of people that anyone can reason with.
It’s like trying to teach a pig to sing.
You’ll just wear yourself out and it annoys the pig.

Much of the general public are not haters but easily led for sure.
And I estimate that, many if not most, don’t care wether we bag a cow elephant or a bull elephant.
What sways them is the screeching anti-hunters telling the average masses their passionate lies, such as, “Elephant numbers (or name your species) are dropping fast, due to hunting and elephants are in danger of becoming extinct, if we don’t stop the hunting of them”.

Average people are usually not malicious but they are for sure easily influenced.
And they tend to shy away from our hunting culture when we crow about our “trophy hunting” / “my horns measured whatever inches” / “I shot a gold medal something or another”, “I got a trophy whatever animal into the record book” and all that.
Plus, I agree with those who say we should not be delivering ammunition to our tormentors by posting pictures of our memories in certain open public web sites, such as Face Book and their ilk.

This is especially true if when the general public reads about our critter/s being a huge “trophy”, with whatever inches and / or whatever “score” the horns measured up to and so forth.
The times they are a-changin’.
And IMO, if one must launch their dead critter photos straight at the unwashed masses, it might be a good idea to post how we prefer the preparation of same for eating, favorite game recipe/s and such likes.

We are totally loosing the “information war” but, we don’t have to loose it.
We evidently just choose to loose it I guess.

Tuskless elephant hunt ?
I am envious of all those who are blessed with such a grand time in the African bush, carrying and using a large bore rifle for what they were designed and all the rest that goes with elephant hunting.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

I am fine with all the hate, :giggle: YouTube pays about $4 per 1,000 views on a site. Here are the stats of my channel for last month.

I’ve just subscribed and earned you an extra $0.004 …. Don’t let you new found wealth go to your head!!

I messaged Michelle Buchanon this morning and told her we might as well go ahead and start getting this next one booked. Ha ha. I asked the wife if she was really all right with us doing another one. It requires some pretty substantial cutting back of our recreational activities around home to be able to actually save up the funds. I even asked her if she wanted to hunt this time. She said she was fine just tagging along and taking pictures, but she did really enjoy the tracking part of it. Now the big deal is deciding what exactly to hunt, whatever it is though it will definitely include another tuskless for me. I may do the @TOBY458 and just put a tuskless and a bull on the menu, or maybe a tuskless and buffalo again, dang it is hard to decide!
I’m not sure if I like tuskless hunting. I’ve shot just 8. But I will find out.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
