Tag and Cabelas safari jackets

Going on my first safari in Limpopo in August. Do hunters wear these safari jackets or are they just to cliche?
Just wear what ever you normally hunt in. No need for anything special for a RSA safari. Spend the $$$ on the hunt!

I alternated between the Redhead ripstop shirt in brown and the Dickie's FLEX Ripstop shirt in OD green. Both were 100% cotton or close to it. The only camo I had on my first trip was my fleece pullover and my insulated vest. I did think about getting one of the reproduction Vietnam jungle shirts from Rothco as they are lightweight and 100% cotton ripstop but the price has gone up.

The only socks I wore other than compression socks on the flight were Darn Tough socks. I wear them everyday and if they ever wear out they are guaranteed for life.

I'd love to be as stylish as Tom Leoni but, unlike him, I could never pull it off !

I already have the cabelas safari shirts and jacket, bought many years ago and never worn. They’re a tan color
@BWB: If your shirts are Cabela’s Safari Shirts from “many years ago” they are likely “Great quality” so hold onto them !! - those older Serengeti shirts were made of a durable cotton canvas with plenty of pockets and held up for many years. Their current shirts are real cheap “crap” and they no longer even make the Serengeti line —- too expensive to produce. Like most of Cabela’s current clothing (since they went Public and later merged with Bass Pro) = ALL Down hill.

I have a couple which I have unfortunately outgrown. Besides the pockets and the snap front, the best thing about these shirts were the articulated shoulders. There was no binding when you swung your arms.

@jpr9954 - I like the older “Safari Serengeti” shirts so much - I’ve bought two USED on Ebay…I’d rather own a USED one then the new “crap” sold today in Cabela’s & Ass Pro !!

All my hunting has been in Montana. Temperatures ranging from 30 degrees to minus 30. Hard to judge hunting in 70 degree weather.
Understood. August in RSA can be quite cold at night but mild during the day. Have a great safari!

@BWB - I liked the older Cabela’s “Safari Jacket” it was a very tight weave cotton poplar, durable and had lots of pockets - handy to wear on the cool early mornings in the truck. As far as the “fashion look” it’s very understated, not much different than any travel vest and does Not scream “I’m on Safari”. However, since Cabela’s current clothing quality is cheap crap - I would look at buying from Tag Safari, they also use a good all cotton poplar thats a tight weave and it’s a little lighter then what Cabela’s use to sell - Not as durable as Cabela’s was but likely adequate.

If you want to fit in in Limpopo, really, really, short Boerboel shorts and a Wildebees jacket!

Tag has some nice, 5.5" inseam shorts to fit in with all the dudes from Zim.

As far as shirts, TAG makes a few nice L/S safari shirts where the sleeves can be rolled up and held in place with a couple straps and buttons. Helps keep off a bit of chill early in the morning and then converted to short sleeve when the day warms up, plus the synthetic material wicks any sweat away. I'm not a big fan of cotton shirts, at least in this context. To each his own, but that's an option. I bought 3 of them for my trip last year.

@sgt_zim - I understand what you mean about some cotton shirts - they can hold moisture and take a long time to dry….But Not a tight weave “poplin” which is like a fine canvas and stays off-the-skin better and air drives quickly and that is the “weave” used by Tag Safari and some other high end cotton poplin shirts - they may be more expensive then most nylon but I believe they are worth it. To your point - Some cotton weaves DON’T work well and those include ”twill” and of course any “knits” like Polo Shirts…both take a long time to dry. But, cotton always breathes better they nylon. Nylon is ok and can be made very thin & light weight and has relative strength but it is used by manufacturers mostly because the fabric is “cheap” and allows a high profit margin - but there are still some well made nylon shirts. The Downsides of cotton: fades, can shrink. As you might guess - I’m a fan of cotton vs synthetics (also wool for Winter).

Hi, the safari jacket has some Nostalgic Value, a reminder of the 1800's Great White Hunter! It's practical use was to reduce Bug bites through the heavy cotton. Nowadays we make these of a light weight Shirt weight fabric to wear over a shirt or a Vest as a Layer that can be peeled off in the mid day sun and worn in the cooler mornings and evenings around the campfire . It's large pockets allow for plenty of storage and carrying capacity. It's Practical and worn by many hunters. The roll up sleeves are cool too.
If you prefer, you can use a Vest without a Safari Jacket. Just remember it gets cool in the mornings and evenings.
