A “famous” guy at SCI told us once that “in Africa, camo is worn by poachers.” He was a fan of earth tones. He was probably only half serious, but just made me wonder if that’s a real deal?

Poachers wear regular clothes. They want to be able to say they were doing other activities instead of identifiable as poaching. Camo in Africa is associated with military activities.

I wore TAG Safari on my South Africa hunt. I looked like a park ranger, but it helped me get "in character" for the hunt. You could wear normal hunting clothes and be just fine. I've done most of my recent hunting in merino wool stuff from various sources and/or Kuiu/Sitka gear. It's likely a waste of money, but it tends to be lightweight and functional compared to cheaper options.

Hell yeah wear your safari jackets. I have two “vintage” cabelas safari jackets and a bunch of the shirts. Very comfortable cotton shirts and love the jackets too.

I wear safari jackets over safari shirts, especially on cool morning when riding in the back of a Land Cruiser. I like (and use) the ammo loops that many of them have.

I have an older, olive drab, Cabela's jacket that is my favorite.

It seems like a lot of the American hunters are KUIU, KUIU, KUIU.

That being said, I'd chanel my inner Hemingway and rock the hell out of nice Westley Richards safari jacket!

...Best you pack a warm jacket/cap for early am/pm. August is Winter and before sunrise, and at sunset, the temperature is on the chilly side.

I just looked back at my 3 trips over. 1 shirt has lasted all 3 hunts and made it into a trophy pic at least once.

Good job being able to wear the clothes you bought 20 years ago. Lol. About half of my Safari clothes have come from tractor supply store and gabs. I stick with heavy or lightweight cotton in drab colors. With a couple long sleeve fishing shirts. Remember Africa is full of thorns so ask your PH how rugged your cloths need to be and don’t forget a pair of leather gloves.

Pro tip...
Darn Tough merino socks!
There is a regular hunting thickness but the tactical weight are incredible!
I have several pairs, I wear them everyday and some of them are two years old, they live up to their name.

I’ll second darn tough socks!
While hiking the Appalachian Trail some people will bring just one pair and they’re often still good to go when they reach Vermont! Nearly 2000 miles in a single pair of socks!
I had two pairs and only made it halfway to WV before I realized I’d drank away my trail budget. The socks held up well though!

I prefer merino for every day wear at all times. May not be as tough as cotton, but it’s definitely cooler as it wicks moisture better.

I prefer Icebreaker merino wool and wrangler shorts. Although I wore some Kuiu merino last trip tooView attachment 666417View attachment 666416

Third on the Darn Tough socks. I wear the hikers (style 1403) for boot socks and the no show runners (style 1033) for gym socks. On very long hikes, a liner sock really helps on blisters. For that I like Injinji liner socks. It feels strange to wear “toe socks” for liners but it will save your skin on long hikes with sweaty feet.

I have started wearing the Tag Safari shirts and a merino wool t shirt as an undershirt. If it gets cold I wear a stocking cap and a hooded sweat shirt on the hunting truck or if sitting in a blind at night. I wear carhart or coulmbia pants. I only ever wear camo if I am turkey or duck hunting at home.

Yes it did. They ironed it too, but it survived well. Got a few holes in it from the thorns. I actually keep the shirts I was wearing for the elephant and leopard back as lucky shirts. Wear them for hunts only

My favorite hat is a T3…. I have them for the boat and hunting and well any occasion. Good choice. Unfortunately, being tall and broad chest, proper fitting shirts are hard to find! I will add I am loving my Jim Green barefoot ranger boots! I haven’t been fortunate enough to make it to Africa but my boots and hat will go with me if I go.

I took a jacket and wore it in the chilly mornings, but it stayed in the safari car while hunting. Wear dark green, gray, or brown clothes - cotton or whatever. I would NEVER wear a 'safari jacket' and be a Stuart Granger look-alike.

For a 3 week safari I packed everything I took in a medium duffel bag and a carry-on with optics and meds. One pair of boots. On arrival at camp my PH said, "Is that it?". Yep. And some of it never got out of the duffel. Moral... don't over think this.
