Starting my 98 build

Well a setback with the 404J the stock I had has either a warp in it that I can't see or the action inletting is way out of line with the stocks outside pattern. This I thought I could overcome by cheating the action to the left when I finished the inletting but it was just to much to move. So I have a walnut Boyd's stock on its way. I could have salvaged the original stock I started with but it would have taken a pile of glass. The old stock will work with a thinner barrel contour. So it's waiting time again.

Seems like it's always something,

That's my luck but it's still moving forward so that's good.
Shawn
Did you go with a standard stock or elect for some upgrades

Standard I messed up I was looking at stocks and what appeared to be a very upgraded stock was on sale for $122 I was going to order it but thought it may be second I called to see.
I was told that it was just on sale, went to site to order and it was gone. It was listed with their regular stocks not on special section.

Hey Shawn, have you ever scrounged E Bay for a stock.

What I see through the wrist makes me think that it should have a reinforcing rod drilled down through it as the only grain that runs full length through it is the top of the dark streak and the light streak above it. All the rest is only through the grip and not the wrist. I dont see it as being suitable for a 404 the way it sits. Just my opinion though but I wouldn't use it myself. My opologies if that goes against your findings.

Von Gruff I have to agree with you on the questionable grain on that side of the stock and I have contemplated sending it back and still may. The other side is a lot better in my opinion. I do agree that some reinforcement would be a good idea and I was wondering if a steel rod or drill a hole and pour it full of glass. The only thing I'm not sure of is weather to drill from butt or to drill from bottom of pistol grip?

How about drilling from the back of the action down towards the pistol grip. When you bed the action it will be hidden.

That is how I do it @stug when it needs to be done.

Have a lok at the grain in the butt end of the stock and it may well be that it is a rift cut blank and that is not good for stability as there can be movement from 10 to 4 or 2 to 8.
The flat or board cut blank is the strongest for a heavy rifle

The quarter sawn is the most stable for an accurate rifle

The rift cut blank is the least desirable and it looks to me as if that is the cut that this blank may be.

I have used a piece of threaded rod with minute clearance so the wood is not presured by the steel and the epoxy resin takes up the clearance space and locks everything into place.

I have the all thread already in my toolbox so I won't have to buny that. Going to pick up a bedding kit this weekend. Have a prototype front sight made out of aluminum just as a fit check of taper and height of sight when I get barrel, talley bases, and talley peep sight I'll measure and make steel one.

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
