Starting my 98 build

My attempt to build a .404

26" barrel, ....0.715 " at the muzzle.

I work with metal all the time machining welding and hand work even a few years of polishing molds so I'm not intimidated by that but the wood working worries me to death. And when I think of checkering I go cold.
But I guess I'll have to learn.

How much does that weight?
Did you extend mag or is the stock slim to expose normal magazine.
I think that's a nice attempt.
Shawn

I do not know the exact mass, but I will weigh it.

The mag is extended in length, you have to go to the (still save) limit of the M98.

The mag is also extended in deep to hold a true 3+1. - what you see is not a slim stock, but an extended magazin.

This fourth cartridge has to be taken by the claw from the magazin.

Otherwise you have to push feed this cartridge.

This is possible only, when you weaken the claw to slip over the rim of this fist cartirdge.... this is the fist step to break the claw!!!

The magazin buttom is NOT to open for loading/unloading without a tool.... this is for savety reasons.

Simply by extending the gap between the bottom metal and the action by about 1/16 to 3/32 you will get an easy 3+1 without having to do any major mag work. The 4th cartridge will go down into the magazine far enough for the bolt to catch it under the extractor without having to alter the extractor.

I just clamped sheet steel to old box welded front corners together ground bottom to match ground top to match then cut old one off old one about 1/4" off bottom welded new one on and if you just start 4th in front it picks right up.

Make sure, the bolt can not be closed when the magazin is empty, without pressing down the magazin spring.

This is the message from the gun ...."I AM EMPTY.. ...please feed me with fresh ammunition"......

...important feature for a dangerous game rifle....

There are pics posted in this thread end of first page beginning of second.
But I will repost two. First is trigger guard with old box cut off the second is new box that the inside dimensions are that of the outside of old box to get enough length I had to move new box forward about.06-.07 inches third is from top. You can see remaining old box on bottom. Hope this is what your looking for.

I have two followers one with catch on it one with it removed the one with the catch needs a little work. It needs lengthened so that it hits front of box a little quicker it doesn't hit and stop bolt it tips and jams. It's going to be many years if ever I get to hunt DG it's more a challenge for myself (egged on by a few here) to make this rifle.
White tail deer and black bear are more likely. But I love the large bore and different cartridges.

Hi Shawn,

I just completed a checkering job on a marlin 336. I posted some of the pics on another post yesterday. Checkering isn't tough... you just have to be willing to put in the time and be very patient. The marlin on the other forum doesn't look like that much checkering but it probably has 8-9 hours into it. It's like any other woodworking or metal working project. take only a little at a time. If your not happy, take a little more. Removing material is easy. Replacing it is not so much. The difference between a beginner and an expert is an expert knows how to make his mistakes look intentional.

This project is going to take a while I'm not rushing anything and the wood will get extra time I've been looking at checkering kits and watching lots of videos a lot of info out there. I'll get it done sometimes the hardest part is getting the courage to start but until I get barrel and get it head spaced the wood will just have to set in the corner and intimidate me.

DIY safety in safe position above.

My DIY safety in safe bolt unlocked.
It took me a while to get this working in my mind and how to retain it was the hardest part but it works with positive stops and no movement of firing pin.
Better than halfway to ordering barrel.

Start scrounging Brass and Bullets. are you installing open sights and a Barrel band

Shawn, Impressive, take your time and it'll be priceless to you....

To kill time (always hard to do) You tube stock inletting and checkering. I just inletted my first blank start to finish over winter (after our deer season...) not hard, of course, patience and think twice (measure twice) before you put bit to wood.

When you get to finishing the stock consider this (might get me boo'd for this but it works). I stripped down an old stock, sanded and then hand rubbed it with bees wax. Might sound weird but it works. Try it on a scrap piece of material first to see if you like the smoothness/texture of the finish before using on your final piece.

Well a setback with the 404J the stock I had has either a warp in it that I can't see or the action inletting is way out of line with the stocks outside pattern. This I thought I could overcome by cheating the action to the left when I finished the inletting but it was just to much to move. So I have a walnut Boyd's stock on its way. I could have salvaged the original stock I started with but it would have taken a pile of glass. The old stock will work with a thinner barrel contour. So it's waiting time again.
Shawn

When I ordered the Boyd's stock they told me 3 weeks because they were shut down for week of the 4th to my surprise they sent me a tracking # on Thursday one day later. Bad news is UPS must have pulled trucks off the road for holiday weekend because it checked into a sorting center Friday and never left.
You have to love this tracking stuff now instead of just wondering when something will arrive you can watch it sit in a warehouse!!!!!
I did get dies ordered next is bullets and talley bases and peep for now. I'm making my own band front sight with evaluation adjustment will post a pic of that next week when I get it finished.
Getting a little excited I may get to hunt bear with it this year.
