Starting my 98 build

It happens. I need to work out how to sneak a Winchester M12 and a Browning A5 into the house this weekend...

I usually build or buy then it gets set in an obscure corner never completely out of sight but as time goes by they get worked on cleaned and generally handled in plain view I put together a ar that looks nothing like anything I had in the past it took a little while longer to get it mixed in but it now runs with the herd with no attention payed to it. Hidden in plain sight. That's my motto. Barrel looks straight bore looks like a mirror.

Yes it was a solid block of steel yesterday.

That came out gorgeous. Would you ever take custom orders if someone could give you blueprints?

I ordered brass last Thursday from Midsouth Shooters Supply it was promptly shipped and arrived at my residence on Saturday. So this puts me one step closer to finishing.

Any interest in selling the small ring wrench?

I'm just about to start a rebarrel project on a small ring Mauser...

The problem with making one long distance is matching the taper on the barrel even though I had the barrel I cut it 3 times to get the fit I wanted. If you look at sight on the barrel it goes a little to far on no but after I have both pcs cerakoted it should be closer to the muzzle.
The odd shaped front sight on top is only for a reference for when I build rear sight once I get it made and setup I will dove tail a proper front sight in.

Working with the metal in this build is a breeze for me but the wood worries me to death. I guess if I was a carpenter the metal would scare me it’s all a matter of what you are familiar with.
I’m moveing slowly now was trying to get it done for bear season .but it just not going to happen.

Are your site graduations going to be used as a reference only? Or are you going to show 50 yds., 100 yds. etc.?
My old Winchester Mod 71 (built in 1936) shows the yardages on the ramp, but I'm betting it was the result of trial and error. You are getting close. I just loaded my first batch of 404 Jeffery bullets. Hopefully going to try them out next week. Been following this thread since the beginning, can't wait to see how she shoots.

No graduations will be for reference only more for piece of mind a quick look to make sure things didn’t move. I don’t think it will need short range graduations I’m using GS Custom 320gr HVs that will be leaving muzzle at approximately 2750fps so i think I can probably sight it in at 100 yards if my eyes can do it and be ok as far as I should shoot with open sights.
This is a pic of one of the 320 HV they sent me to use in dummy rounds to get feeding right.
GS Customs sent me five they turned out just for that purpose. No coating and left the hole for hollow point small because of how many times I would be cycling them. This is a challenging and fun project and as I near completion I’ve been slowing down a bit.

That is a very usefull sight Shawn and similar to what I had on my 404. It should prove as dependable and purposeful as mine did.

I wanted open sights for now because I a scoped 375 Ruger and that will do my longer range work for now. Went for higher open sight because because I have trouble getting down into lower opens (large head and no neck) most of my rifles have medium or high mounts just to get a good sight picture. The pic above is the 375 and it is about perfect for mei close my eyes shoulder it open them up and have perfect sight picture no need to adjust my head. Went with peep/ghost ring which ever it is do to eyes getting older I noticed lately that it’s harder to shoot my flintlock with open iron but the peep on my buddy’s AR works great for me. I made the hole in the sight is .210 so if it is to big all I have to do is tap it 1/4-28 and put a liner in it with a smaller hole in it.

Shawn, I like your idea of the larger "ghost ring" and the possibility of reducing the aperture size with an insert. I have an old rifle, I believe it is a Remington Mod 141 with a tang sight on it that has that feature. If it were me I'd thread the peep prior to bluing. I use the insert on the range and the ghost ring while hunting.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
