I'm being told that RSA now requires a temporary export permit when you take your own firearms into the country.

Has anyone experienced this recently?

Thanks
MJ

I did not here of this.
All I know is the SAPS form and 4457.

I was there May 6-21 and didn't need anything other than SAPS paperwork there and the 4457 when I can back to the states.

This may be a UK only thing as it's being mentioned on UK forums. Last year I just needed :-

Passport
Firearms certificate
Letter of invitation from PH
Flight details
Completed SAPS 520 form

Job done. Now I'm being told there are copies of these temporary export permits displayed in Jo'burg airport and that they are now required.

Maybe so?

Now with the other details I've always taken all the stuff you list. Although in two trips to SA and one to Zim I've never been asked to show the letter of invitation. Just a comment, would always take it as the one time I didn't would be the one time someone wanted to see it!!!

It is a UK thing only.

It was discussed in this thread along with a link for more information I believe.

I just came back a week ago to the US and I had no problems at all, all the way through the process with SAP's. I had my letter of invite but they never asked for it.

Depends where you are from.
I have to have a temporary export permit for my firearms, scopes and ammo. (CANADA)
Never been asked for them.
It is just our proof of ownership and small arms control method.

Sometimes the folks at customs are a little confused.
Hope you get an answer that helps you out.

Just dawned on me. The SAPS 520 is an export and import application.
All depends on the sections you are filling out for your purposes.
Perhaps there was some confusion???

Well it's been a bit of a farce with the permit. Basically the South African police have recently started asking UK citizens for the temporary export permit in addition to the regular :-

Passport
Firearms Certificate
Flight tickets
Letter of Invitation

These are issued by UK customs. After receiving very conflicting advice from the armoury department I managed to get them to email me the required permit. Then.... when we arrived at Heathrow and we handed our guns over to Customs, we were given a second permit. This was volunteered. When we got to Jo'burg we were not asked for it!!!

If you're travelling from the UK though, get one just in case. You can apply in advance to save you any potential grief when you get to Jo'burg. Contact details here :-

Classic.... Head Office says you need XYZ. At the airport the Customs Agents knows zero about it OR it is a Non enforcement day.

Thanks for sharing the information.

@Mac Baren, I live central to city of Cincinnati. I have work travel early this week but could hopefully meet later this week (with no schedule changes). What area of town are you working/staying in?
Kind regards
Ron
