Great report @johnnyblues, I do hope you got the waterbuck or bushbuck you were looking for. Nice buff though. I am glad your hunt was everything you wanted.
The hunting gods were good today. We stared out early this morning looking for a Waterbuck, we crossed the gate into the hunting area and we almost immediately saw two bulls in the flood plains. One was a definite shooter but there was no approach so we decided to go up on top and see if we could find any other bulls. We did find a nice bull , we tried getting into position but he busted us. We then decided to see if we could approach the other bulls in the flood plains from behind , several hours have passed and when we got back to the area they were gone.
Marius and I just couldn't believe the luck we've had the past two days. Just then he received a call from a friend who knew we were looking for bush buck. He informed Marius he'd been watching a ram for about an hour and said we need to get there asap. Driving the 15 miles in record time we arrived on the side of the road where he greeted us. We Luke see the ram bedded down several hundred yards away and we planned a stalk. Almost immediately two duikers burst out and the stalk was over.
Again Marius said I've never seen luck like this before.. Thinking about hunting bushbuck again the future I packed away my 270 wsm in my hard case and threw it in the back of the truck. His friend said let's take a ride to the far end just for the he'll of it..enroute we spotted a ram running along the brush line about 100 yards away, we stopped immediately only having my 375 near me in the truck I had no choice but to jump out with that. Immediately Marius had the sticks down I placed my 375 Ruger on the sticks, the ram was now 100 yards away and heading into the brush. He stopped for a moment and all I could see was the top of his back, I steadied the rifle and let loose. Dropping him dead in his tracks. I can't believe we did it. He was an old warrior worn down tips. Just beautiful to me. And I complete my spiral slam.
We decided after quickly skinning the bushbuck to head back to the concession where we hunted waterbuck this morning. We entered the property hoping to see the two waterbucks in the flood plains but we couldn't find them. We decided to drive to the top and see if anything was coming out of the brush to feed. Marius spotted a bull and the stalk was on. We slowly crept thru the thick brush to where we thought he was....gone!
We got back in the truck and decided to drive around and see if we could spot him in the brush line. It wasn't long before we spotted him again. The stalk was on. Slowly and silently we made our way towards the bull. Cover was sparse but luckily he was feeding slightly lower then our position. We got to within 75 yards then did the belly crawl another 15 yards. Marius instructed me to stay down while he slowly raised one leg at a time on the sticks. Watching thru the binoculars we waited until the bull was slightly quartering away so I could stand up and shoot. Seconds passed and Marius said smoke him , slowly I stood up and placed the 375 on the sticks and fired. Perfect shot to the shoulder, he stumbled several feet and collapsed. A beautiful big bull. Quick tape on him 30.3 inches.
Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.
