SOUTH AFRICA: Hippopotamus Hunt With Pawprint Safaris 2017

It would be funny to watch Pieter putting the target on the hippo for you(y)

Now STUG ....if Pieter wants to sneak up on a sleeping one and do that I'm ok with it. But I suspect he will do the same thing with the Hippo that he did with the elephant. Standing beside me at a low voice he will tell me where to hit the big guy! Hoping to recreate this pose just with the different trophy.

Yeah just my warped sense of humour. A very impressive target, that hippo, like your elephant, doesn't stand a chance.

Good shooting Charlie!

Tick-tock....

Best of Luck on the hunt! You sure handle that gun well! I'm sure you will have a great hunt for a hippo!

Thanks @enysse! 56 days to departure now! I missed a day at the range Saturday due to all the Delta Airlines mess in Atlanta. Actually spent Friday night in the damn airport. But I'll get at least one more trip to the range to practice!

So far, the hippo hunt was the best hunt for me - I´m sure you will have a lot of fun! I had to shoot from the boat.... target was goin up and down and up and down...

It´s a great experience.

Sorry you had trouble getting out of Atlanta. I was looking forward to shooting with you on Saturday. I've got that 416 talking sweet to me even if only at 75 yards. I seriously doubt that adding an additional 25 yards is going to change that any. I must say that the recoil did get my attention, but at the same time didn't bother me all that much. Maybe we can get some trigger time in after you get back from Africa. Our next trip to KC will be sometime in late July or August.

Yea that was not a fun night in Atlanta. I was disappointed that I couldn't make it to shoot with you guys. I hope Art and I can get to the range once before I go over. About 55 days to departure now so next week I guess I'll start packing and re packing stuff.

By the way this makes post number 8000 for me here on AH.

@Silence I am hoping to rank this hunt right up there with elephant. It's bound to be a blast!

I hope for some nice pictures and the story!

Do you know of any other AH members that you might be "bumping" into at airports and such on the way to Africa?

Art I haven't asked this question yet but now you have to do it !

Folks I depart June 6th on Delta flight 200 out of Atlanta. Anybody going over that day?

Soft points or solids for the hippo guys??

Charlie most discussions ive seen have veered towards solids. Certainly could make a difference of on land versus water however of which way a ph prefers.

Initial discussion was quality expanding federal premium.

I'd say start with expanding. Give that thing as much energy transfer as you can. Then get on it with solids

When I get the opportunity to hunt hippo, it will be on land if at all possible and my first choice gun/ammo will likely be a 505 Gibbs with a 525 grain TSX at 2300fps. I'd be tempted to use only that load, but if the PH wants solids I would use solids in that same load. Or if I was very sure it would be a real close in shot, might be tempted to use 600 grain Woodleighs.

But in a smaller caliber I could be talked into Trophy Bonded Bear Claws or A-Frames for expanding bullets.
