Ruminating on the idea of building/ buying the wife a safari rifle

Yea I have one of those in a 300WSM. It's great going vertical up a mountain on all fours chasing hairy white goats. But I can't ever see taking it to Africa.

Africa just screams for Blued Steel and Fine Walnut;) In other words, a rifle with soul:)
@ActionBob
My soulless Savage with a stainless barrel in 35 Whelen screamed Africa to me, but that's me.
The rifle matched the owner, plain simple and not overly good looking but gets the job done.

Heck why not be happy with her even joining you at the range...... After she's done shooting, maybe you can get her to hold your beer while you shoot. Hahaha
@ActionBob
I can really see you doing that with @Just Gina, NOT. If you did I have visions of you looking at the sky from a horizontal position after she but strokes you under the chin with a rifle with a steel but plate.
I would need bigger balls than that to say that to her.
I may fear no man but a pissed off wife is a whole different story. Safer to hunt a wounded leopard with a toothpick than cross a pissed off wife.
Ha ha ha ha ha

I've never been happier to not be married. I feel for you guys.

Marriage is an institution
Love is blind
So us married men live in institutes for the blind.
The wives get the engagement ring, wedding ring and eternity ring.
Us blokes get the wedding ring then comes the suffering.

You will recall that poem about the owl and the pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat. Then comes along a piggy wig with a ring at the end of his nose, his nose, and I get to thinking - that sounds awfully like a double.

You are correct sir. I've done it twice. Never again. There's a 24 hour limit for a chick to be at my house now haha...

Cheers

Ha ha. I'm gonna make sure she is interested in doing some killing before I drop $12,000 on her a rifle. I would love to buy her a rigby, but I can buy her a really nice rifle and a pretty decent PG hunt for what that rifle costs.
I remember seeing a magnificent Piotti 20 ga shotgun for I believe $18,000 about 20-30 years ago. A guy bought it for his wife. A year later, I see it in the same shop with a 12 inch LOP and many dings and much reduced price. His wife decided hunting was not what she wanted to do.

Personally I have a few kayaks, camping gear, fishing gear and such after it was decided none of that met Barbara's desires.

Be careful before getting into a big dollar item.

I took a .376 Steyr to Africa some years ago. Looked at a Chapuis double rifle in .375 H & H. The Steyr is lightweight and I carried it easily the whole time we were there. Almost the same ballistics as .375 but in a compact package. The length of pull is adjustable.

I worked with a guy who put in every minute of overtime and every occasion and holiday, he showered his wife with expensive jewelry. On his 50th wedding anniversary he had a big to do planned. Instead, she handed him divorce papers and said Happy Anniversary. Yes, she left for good and didn't come back.
My two cents, bag all that tit for tat, she's gotta have this and that. Spend money on experiences, they can never be in a divorce settlement, ruined or lost forever. Everyone's MMV.
Edit: A cheap, accurate rifle will kill something dead as well as the iconic ones. A tool is made to be used, not fondled. Again, YMMV.

After a bit of discussion with my Smith we have it narrowed down pretty close. We looked hard at different wood options and decided this would be the stock that makes the most sense.
It's a McMillan fiberglass HTG/M40A1 in thier "walnut" pattern. Which to me looks pretty darn good. I will use his action which is a Caprock action with a switch lug and integral picatinny machined into the front and back of the action with an open top for easier top loading. It will be a long action which will allow it to run both short and long action rounds depending on which barrel is on it. Standard bolt face which will allow us to sneak into the DG realm if we need to with a 9.3x62 barrel. Still a few details to hammer out but it is coming together. We are taking a couple trips to the range this weekend so she can try on a few different rifles/recoil levels and see where we are at.

That's why I like this McMillan "Mcwalnut". I love all the old romantic rifles but at the end of the day your rifle is indeed a tool. Hemingway and Ruark and all those guys were not hunting with flintlocks because "that's the way they used to do it", they along with everyone else back then used the most up to date technology they could get thier hands on. While I do want to keep it a little bit classic, I plan to make it the most accurate and capable rifle that I can. The McMillan HTG is tough, no worries about scratches or rough handling. The switch lug system allows for barrel/caliber changes depending on the particular mission at hand. The picatinny rails machined into the action allow for fast and repeatable changes in optics or sight apertures, again mission dependant. West Texas Ordnance rifles are crazy accurate and the repeatability between barrel changes is incredible. This will definitely be a work rifle and not a show piece, however at a glance it will look pretty much like a regular wood and blue rifle, its just synthetic and cerakote camouflaged as wood and blue.

Benelli Lupo in 300 win mag. With their recoil reduction system shoots like a 270. Want to reduce recoil even farther put a silencer on it . Fancy walnut or black synthetic. Adjustable stock for LOP . I have the walnut and really enjoy shooting this gun.
