I don´t see anything strange in this. In Spain I can apply for renewal of my License the day before it expires, and then I get a temporary 3 months license, until renewal.

But if I let my license expire, I have to turn in my guns immediately, and could be fined.

Except that they were postponing renewals while the courts rules whether sections 24 and 28 were indeed constitutional. Immediately upon the judge giving his decision, all those impacted gun owners were now forced into surrender of their firearms with no grace period to renew licensure under section 24 and 28. Thus, the RSA government gets to seize 300,000 guns (it may be permits, so it may be more guns than that?) and the owners are out of luck on their option to renew, the guns get seized and destroyed.

It's the insidious details that point to the chilling effect that was intended.

OK, I just didn´t get the fact that they were postponing the renewals without giving a temporary license, as it would be in our case.

Sad fact is they should just have re applied for the licence, simple.

This is ok. , but with all the terrible statements coming from the government of S A it makes you think the whatthe real purpose is. ?

There are plenty of issues and hidden agendas in SA. But not applying for your firearm licence in time is your own stupidity especially with the situation we have had here over the years. Leaving that decision in others hands also makes no sense.

Yes it is a pain in the arse, but if you wanted to keep your firearm legal, just re-apply within the given time frame, simple and don't wait for others to make decisions that don't end up going your way.

Read @rookhawk comments. It was not the issue of not renewing in time, it was the way it was done. Also, tell me if the criminals are going to turn in their weapons? Criminals do not obey any laws, so we can have all the laws in the world, and only us, the law-abiding-citizen will be affected by them.

Land confiscations can start unabated now.

Oh this is gonna be lovely I can see!

Several left wing liberal publications here in the USA have written articles saying that none of this is happening in RSA. It is just paranoia on the part of conservatives. There is no land theft, no farm violence, no gun grab.......we just made it all up. I felt very reassured to read the article in "The Gaurdian" entitled, "Trump tweets about farm killings while the indigenous population faces annihilation .." .......(That "indigenous population" is expected to double in the next 30 years or so BTW)...and please..saying that one can just "renew your license early" is joking, I hope. This will be only the first of many laws.....hoops to jump thru to keep that firearm. As in other countries that have confiscated all firearms....they start softly......FWB
