Hookmeup, I agree to some regard. The US intelligence on Iraq was a joke. The U.S. intelligence on Iran is a joke.

I trust the Israeli intelligence data 100%. They don’t have the luxury to dabble in the ridiculous things our intelligence agencies have been. Ours being more worried about internal politics than external threats. (Left and Right regimes)

Israel does not have the luxury to be wrong. We will not have all the stars aligned to deal with Iran again for who knows how long. If ever.

Arab nations aligned behind us. Iran proxies decimated, Iran missile defense and offensive systems decimated, Iran air defense decimated.

If we agree that Iran hates all Americans and Jews. And will continue to kill both at any opportunity. And we also agree their leadership believes in ending the world if that means killing Americans and Jews. Then we should agree they cannot have nuclear weapons.

I dont think he expects them to accept an unconditional surrender...

this is how Trump "negotiates".. we see it in his economic policy, his domestic policy, etc..

he makes a demand of the other side that he knows is not obtainable or not desireable (look at how things started with Canada and Mexico over tariffs)...

the other side pushes back with something undesireable to Trump..

Trump then meets them in the middle between his undesireable first offer and their undesireable first response..

we all know what he wants.. he wants complete dismantling of their nuke program with a promise (that no one would expect them to keep) to not restart the program at any time in the future.. and the allowance of US (not UN or NATO) inspectors to check and verify that everything agreed upon is going to plan, is on schedule, etc..

I think he'll settle just knowing their nuke program is set back another decade or more.. and be done with it..

Which is honestly good by me.. while those on the most extreme left probably disagree, I think the overwhelming majority of the world agrees with Trump on the statement that Iran must not obtain nuclear anything (if they are even allowed nuclear power they will do everything they can to weaponize what they have)...

Like it or not they are the most prolific and determined sponsor of international terrorism on the planet.. Iranian sponsored terrorists have attacked the US, Israel, Russia, Argentina, Saudi Ararbia, the UK, Sweden, Denmark and a host of other nations since 1979... it is in everyone's best interest that Iran's current regime gets muzzled, has its economy put on its heels, and its nuke program shredded..

It is yet another of these inane verbal blunders that his supporters will write off as Trump just being Trump, but foreign leaders, particularly adversaries, will be forced to take him literally. I am sure Trump heard the expression somewhere and thought it sounded tough - God knows he never read it in a book. Unconditional surrender is an ultimatum - there can be no negotiations with that demand. Moreover, there is no way we can achieve such an end without invading the country - which we are not remotely prepared to do.

And you are absolutely correct. The "unconditional surrender" demands on Germany and Japan helped keep Hitler in power, rallied the populations of both countries to fight until the bitter end, and likely extended the war by at least six months. Churchill was quietly furious over it.

I agree with your assessment of his likely objective and your perception of a desirable end state. The problem with this sort of stupid rhetoric is it also stakes out an end state for the conflict that I am certain that we are unwilling to even attempt to achieve. If they take him seriously, then they will fight to the bitter end of whatever we hope to actually achieve as a conclusion to this conflict, and if they don't believe him, then I assume they are not taking anything he says seriously.
