I am no master of knowledge but I am pretty sure Germany didn't pressure Austro-Hungaria to invade Serbia and start the great war on July 28, 1914. Though things would have probably come to a head eventually, the Germans certinally were not ready for that.
Bingo!!! Archduke Franz Ferdinand wasn't much liked at home, the cafes in Vienna the next day could have cared less and talked about soccer for all he mattered. Then someone thought it would be a good pretext to gain back disputed land around Serbia. Alliances were called upon, and the DUMBEST WAR ON EARTH got fought. If it had not been, there would have been no "mistreatment" of Germany in the after war settlements, and therefore no axe for Hitler to grind to regain the honor of the homeland. It heralded the first beginning of the end for "I fight because my master says to fight and he knows best mentality." Japan was snubbed and ignored in the decision making after the war AND SWITCHED FROM BEING AN ALLY TO BEING PART OF THE NEXT AXIS POWERS!" Yeah, dumb as a bag of hammers.

I suppose we are in deed imperial to a degree, that is fair. Nobody was as Imperial as the euros though and they abandoned their people totally as in Africa and now are being destroyed at hoime too for some supposed guilt even though there isn't a speck of the world that has not been invaded, colonized, etc. Africa got their independence back and I would argue it's worse for the vast majority of Africans. Ukraine is not on our border, it's not ours to defend. But if we do what do we get from it? Do we get their resources or is Ukraine free to do as they please as you said Zelensky is? The only thing of any value we get now is ferrous metals and can we not produce that at home?

I agree per my comment it's not good to let Putin have the resources. If that's an issue then the euros who we protect for free due to a bullshit NATO deal that robs the US taxpayer to a degree that makes me sick can do something about it since they are in the direct vicinity. Instead, they bought natural resources from your evil Russia and is that your definition of a "NATO" ally? They went green due to stupidity (we are trying to do the same idiotic thing now, lol) and now are paying the price. The turn the other cheek was on the euros (hi neville) not us. We of course has to come in to save them for the millionth time. What did we get from that? Who were our allies then? Russia and china? Who are our supposed friends now? Germany and Japan. The euros let it go and that's their fault. Would you send your child to fight Putin directly vs this stupid proxy war? I would not.

Trump is not perfect but look what we have now due to a moronic populace? He was spied on before and after the election. Nobody went to jail. He had 99% of the media against him because he wouldn't play along with the treason the elites do. Yes, he could have shut up. No way, zero chance, russia does this under Trump (like they did with subversive manchurian candidate obozo the traitor). The middle east so-called war lasted 20 years and we got nothing out of it. Do you think it's odd nobody ever asks why we don't get an OIl from Iraq???????? Odd imo. Cost us trillions and the much blood. The only people who profitied was the MI complex (thx Cheney) and the war was started over a lie. The MI complex has given 30M to politicians this year. Hmmmm....Excess material? You mean our million dollar missiles are excess? lol Trump would never have left civilians to languish and not even tell our British and other allies. 13 young marines were killed due to this idiot. I disagree with your premise we need to pay for the world and be their police.

Thank you for your servive.
German males were worked (slaved) for 3 years after the war because it was considered appropriate that they help repair what they tore up. I agree. Women cleared much of the rubble back home. Everyone suffered and that is good--in the same way and to the same degree that criminals paying restitution to victims is good. It would have been just to have TAKEN as much oil as the war cost us financially in Iraq, AND it would have been a lesson they took to heart.

With regard to conventional warfare it seems like both their models have been typified by waves of Chinese soldiers in Korea, or waves of every-other-man-armed soldiers in the battle for Stalingrad thus depending on masses of uninformed, obedient cannon fodder for success. Now they are having refusals from certain quarters to be said cannon fodder. Interesting.
Pretty sure that scene from Enemy at the Gates never happened, at least not the way it was portrayed with the USSR. 1st Marine Division reliably reported that's what the chicoms did at Chosin.

You would certainly know better than I, but from my study of military history, what has made nation states and militaries which formed out of the Peace of Westphalia so effective at war fighting is they have to one degree or another placed heavy emphasis on decentralizing a lot of decision making, at least when compared to Asian armies, and I include the Russians as part of that inferior model. This decentralization common in western militaries encourages the growth of leadership qualities all the way down to junior NCOs.

“An army of sheep led by a lion is better than an army of lions led by a sheep.” -- Alexander the Great

I think we've done one better - we generally have lions leading lions.

Seems to me that a gunnery sergeant or sfc has much more authority and latitude to act than even mid-grade officers in the old Soviet army, and the current Russian army.
Not only do they have more authority - they don't even really exist in the Russian Army. They have no professional NCO Corps like we, the British or the French.

I voted for him twice. Some truly great things were accomplished during his term - I recognize that and agree. HOWEVER... He could have accomplished SO MUCH MORE, and been there for a second term, if he'd just tried to be the adult in the room once in a while, instead of being a petulant 5 year old so often. No one will ever convince me otherwise.

I sincerely hope we have another choice in 2024.
Yeah, what he said.

An academy classmate of mine was in desert storm/shield, a 1st Lt in armored cav. He describes the Kuwaiti military in similar terms - no professional NCO Corps. That just seems like the normal model for most of the world.

good to hear. That's odd since I was told above they are a huge threat and we need to fight a proxy war with them.
NB, your contrary approach is rather unpleasant to say the least. The USA is THE world power, like it, lump it, but it is true. With that comes global responsibilities, just the way it is. Why is it important and necessary? Because of the likes of Putin, single people with huge power and bad desires. He started this war remember. And Kim, and the Ayatollah, and some others. Without the USA who is there to control the unruly ones? No they won't go away and no they won't stop at their own borders. The USA is far from perfect, but thank God it is there.

Two issues: Prosecuting the Ukraine war- It appears there are two levels of the war. The standard ground game with infantry & armor doing the age old slugfest; and the equivalent of artillery except now the shells are guided using TV cameras in the warhead/fuse with systems sometimes miles away. Given that the present US administration has been known to lie rather than tell the truth, I wonder how much involvement the US or contractors have. For example, a rocket and firing mechanism could be delivered to Ukraine where it was taken to within range of a prospective target. A recon drone could fly overhead until it spotted a target of opportunity, the camera could send realtime pictures of the target along with location coordinates to the receiver which via satellite could be anywhere. the person viewing the pictures could determine if the target and area are suitable for the ordinance. If so, push the fire button and direct the ordinance onto the target using the camera in the rockets fuse, the person doing this need not be in Ukraine or even Ukrainian. the main function of the Ukrainians would be transport the rockets, drones and maintenance/security of the forward bases. Given the lack of truth with the present administration, I wonder just how much the US is doing, particularly as the operator of the above system. It is clear the president won't be telling anyone. But if so, it would be a means of cutting back on the corruptions that I read about where the munitions are being sold to third parties for use elsewhere in the world.

Second issue: President Trumps adversarial personality. I recall he and his wife taking the ride down the escalator and announcing his candidacy for president. He immediately had three enemies: the establishment Republicans, the Democrats, and the network media. Complete lies were fabricated, some just to hurt his reputation, others to allege involvement with foreign countries, on and on. On the basis of NO evidence the Democratic controlled house impeached him twice. Even members of the Republican party voted to convict him- again, with NO evidence. During all of this Presidnet Trump was trying to campaign for president, then govern as president., then run for re-election. Through it all, the forces against him were legion and unrequitting. His only option was to take to the offense and push back. Had the three groups of adversaries put the country first and allowed Trump to get the credit for his actions, the US would be a superstar of a country. Instead the three determined it was more important to destroy Trump even at the expense of destroying the US. So with the present administration the US is a couple steps from becoming a backwater has been along the lines of other has been/never were countries.

Mr Trump said the Biden administration should be pushing Russia and Ukraine to sue for peace – warning the conflict could be heading toward “World War III”, according to The Hill.
“And now we have a war between Russia and Ukraine with potentially hundreds of thousands of people dying,” he said during a rally in Arizona on Sunday.
“We must demand immediate negotiation of a peaceful end to the war in Ukraine, or we will end up in World War III and there will never be a war like this.”

As to your second issue, when Trump was elected President, he upset the proverbial apple cart. He wasn’t a politician, was wealthy and couldn’t be bought, and didn’t play by the corrupt back room politics as usual by BOTH parties. We have never had a non politician President like him. Like him or not, he got things done for the most part for the overall benefit of the WORKING MIDDLE class in this country. Now we have a useless 45+ year career politician as President, and it’s back to corrupt Congressional business as usual for BOTH parties. Just my 2 Iraqi dinar. LOL

France, Germany, Japan and South Korea jointly issue a warning to the United States!

Oct 10, 2022 Recently, after the "North Stream" pipeline was suspected of being deliberately damaged, the energy crisis in European countries has reached a new height. At this time, its ally the United States has taken the opportunity to raise energy prices and make huge profits. This makes European countries, which are already suffering from energy shortages, even more dissatisfied, and feels that they have been "backstabbed" by other so-called "friendly countries" such as the United States. Germany, which has always been overly dependent on external energy, has decided to form a buyer alliance with Japan, South Korea and other countries. , put pressure on major energy exporters such as the United States to lower the price of natural gas. The alliance was dubbed "G7+" by one official because there are some countries that are not part of the G7 group

That’s a lot of yuan, Juan! About 500,775,969,031 Iraqi dinar. Way too expensive for a bridge!

With respect to your first paragraph - no. The Ukrainian army, under US and British tutelage has been going through a determined and very successful reorganization of its force structure, training, and professional development (officer and NCO) beginning around 2010 and accelerating dramatically in 2014. They have participated in all major NATO exercises during that period, sent their company grade officers to our and the British basic and career courses and their field grade officers to our staff and war colleges. Their best NCOs have attended NCO career courses in both countries as well while their MOD as established similar professional development programs in Ukraine. In short they have worked very hard and are becoming very good at their trade.

With respect to targeting with UAVs (drones - military hates that word). we are the ones taking notes. Our capabilities at the strategic (for instance Global Hawk) and operational (Reaper) levels of war are unmatched. At the tactical level however, we have been slow to adapt. Ukraine has been an eye-opening learning experience for us, and it is Ukraine that is doing the innovation so successfully. As you might imagine there is a fairly broad network of folks like me (retired and active duty) who watch, debate, and study this conflict pretty closely. I actually spend much more time in that dialogue than I do discussing hunting these days. We are not particularly interested in flying around small drones to drop grenades on people - we would rather hit them with a 500lb JDAM from a fighter bomber. But the tactical targeting capability they have created is darn near revolutionary.

Ukraine needs strategic and operational intelligence, weapons, training, and munitions. They have this actual conduct of combat operations well in hand.

Trump said the United States “taunted Putin” to the point “of almost forcing him” to invade Ukraine.

Poor Russians. Must be an interesting existence to be so paranoid and so incompetent that one can't even mange one's own foreign policy decisions without being bullied or tricked by those devious Westerners.

Pretty funny!

Sometimes when the Russians are rolling out their latest nonsensical economic propaganda through their willing accomplices in the West, it is worthwhile to remember they are a nation with an economy smaller than that of Texas and with far far less GDP per capita - by which measure they are a fairly poor third world country. For instance Mexico's GDP per capita is nearly $10,000 to Russia's $8,735. Truly eyewatering economic efforts and results.

I do not understand why Germany has taken so long to provide support, they should be ashamed. The free world in particular buys German goods and greatly supports their industries, so where were you Germany when you were so sorely needed?
