How stupid one can get? Shutting government down just weeks before the election is political malpractice. First, GOP will get blamed for it, secondly it will suck the news cycles away from the Presidential election. Unfortunately, it will be the swing districts that will go Democrat instead of the House Chaos Caucus that are in safe districts. I guess they will keep rattling their sabers as the permanent members of the perpetual minority party.

meh...

how many years in a row has it been now that the govt enters into ridiculous budget discussions quite literally with just 1-3 weeks left in the fiscal year, which results in "threats" to shut the government down.. which really doesnt do much other than put non essential personnel on deferred payment PTO for a brief period until politically one side out maneuvers the other in the polls and the low polling side has to concede in the occasional occurrence of us actually reaching a shutdown?

This particular dispute isnt even about the freaking budget.. its about an attached bill related to voter registration.. so OF COURSE neither side wants to actually sign off on a budget or a CR, or whatever other BS they are going to come up with to excuse themselves from their DUTY to pass a budget and just keep spending.. both sides want to expose the other over the open border situation and try to fire up their base a month before the election..

D's will jump up and down and declare the R's are playing with our financial future and that they are oppressing the vote...

R's will jump up and down and declare that D's want illegal border crossers to have every opportunity possible to illegally vote because they refuse to sign a common sense bill.. and that the illegals are a threat to our financial future..

and at the last minute on the last day they will pass a 6 week resolution that will cost more to invoke than it will actually assist the govt in continuing to run in the interest of "an election"..

and then once the American people decide who is going to wear the POTUS hat, they'll fire up the same tired arguments all over again until sometime between mid Jan and mid Feb when they will finally all decide to move forward yet another year without a budget and just work off a CR..

its september... which is just another word for groundhog day on capital hill.. same shit as last year and the year before and the year before and the year before... nothing new here at all..

Whatever happened to him? I remember him saying on TV, “There are no US troops in Iraq”, while in the background an Abrams is rolling up over a small hill. LOL

He was arrested in 2003.. IIRC he was released in 2008 and moved to Dubai... No idea what hes done after that.. my guess is he had a few million in a baathist bank account that he could access and is living ok..

Well, the Republicans got their marching orders...
"If Republicans don't get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form," Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday.

If they listen to Trump and shutdown the Government, they deserve the consequences.

This will play out just as brilliantly as the delay in funding for Ukraine. The Freedom for Me but not for Thee Caucus and a couple of other achieved nothing in that public fiasco and this will be far worse because of the pending election. I assume none of those voting against the measure passed elementary math. Accurately counting the votes is rather essential for any legislative achievement.

I mean it is almost impossible to characterize how ridiculous this reporting sounds to the average voter in this country.

"House Republicans on Wednesday defeated their own plan to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month, with the party divided over the length of a short-term funding bill and what, if anything, should be attached to it."

You mean like the D’s suffered consequences when the hill shut down the govt for 21 days during the Clinton administration?

Or when the D’s suffered for shutting down the govt over the affordable care act / Obamacare for 16 days during the Obama administration?

Or when the hill shut down the govt for 35 days during the trump administration over funding the border wall?

Or every other year when they threaten the same thing, always arguing over something other than the actual budget, and hold the American people hostage, but find resolution at the 11th hour on the very last day?

Same shit, different day, with politicians still being politicians like they always have…

Kabuki…

Sometimes there is better timing for the "same shit."

And your reading of history is rather different than mine.

Both the public at the time and every historian will point the finger at Newt Gingrich rather than Clinton as the stumbling block in 95-96. In fact, the shutdown's absolute failure was taken as a lessen by republicans for nearly two decades.

In 2013, a republican house again refused a democrat president, Obama, supported by a democrat senate, to provide a "clean" affordable health care act. In a repeat of the Gingrich experience, the republican house claimed they wouldn't budge, and for 16 days the government shut down. Absolutely nothing happened and the horrific press and polling forced Boehner to submit a clean extension ending the shutdown.

Would have hoped even a Boebert had this figured out - but then she may not have even taken third grade math.

As to any lasting impact, you are likely correct - except November 5 is near enough and the election close enough that "lasting" likely isn't in play but immediate impression mat very well be.

We are in complete agreement on all of the above…

Just saying if this surprises anyone… they haven’t been paying attention..

I’m honestly amazed they weren’t already rattling the shutdown saber 2 weeks ago… we’ve been in the final throes of the 2024 budget (non existence of.. but agency level budgets monies) and watching the annual frivolous end of year spend since mid August… every agency in the fed govt we’ve got connectivity with has been blowing tax payer money like a nymphomaniac at a porn convention for the last 30 days

They can’t spend money fast enough right now…

But want to argue about whether or not we’re going to fund the government in 2 weeks at the same time…

On the plus side as the dollar gets stronger, imported items will cost less. I am already seeing that in my business. We just placed orders for equipment sourced in China and paying 10+% less than when we quoted the project to our client just 6 months ago. That can help with shopping at places like Walmart, Target etc..
No, it unfortunately won't. I manufacture and sell products to both the aforementioned retailers among many others. I have never seen them decrease retails based on currency fluctuations. Rather, larger retailers demand a portion of the exchange rate variance if not it entirely to keep your vendor status and maintain the retail.

To be disruptive in the market to gain share? Yes, they may run a promotion. However they are extremely unlikely to reduce retails as exchange rate is cyclical and small variances (3%ish) are built into vendor agreements and over that required as a concession or lose being vendor of record.

On top of what they are paying their workers now and pressure to keep worthwhile employees demanding higher wages...retails will not decrease with any usual currency fluctuations.

Interesting that Trump is in New York for a rally today. Does that mean internal polling is close enough that Trump is going to try and push Harris to spend money in NY.

Probably not, but it is the media attention capital of the planet and could help tight down ticket house races in NY.

Agree… being in NY isn’t about winning NY IMO… it’s about MSM headlines and online clicks..

NY is going to get a whole lot more attention than most other places… and his activities like seeing that young kid at the hospital today is going to get far more clicks than another rally in some “battleground” state…

The Rank and file union members in the Detroit area also support Trump. Of course their assessments go to DC, which are funneled to the Democrats. They have no choice in that decision.
