If you want a real scare about the outcome of a such an event - a nuclear EMP attack - read “One Second After” by John Matherson. I can only say that it was a threat of great concern to the US Defense establishment.

Excellent read to get an understanding of what America would go through after an EMP.

When you bought your vintage Landcruiser, my second thought after "What a cool vehicle" was that you were preparing for an EMP. Perhaps I am wrong in that assumption, but it was my assumption none the less.

:cool:There is plenty of open source material with respect to a 1.5 megaton event 250 miles above Kansas. My personal wealth outside what is in the gunsafe may evaporate, but we will have a functioning vehicle at least as long as we can access fuel.

If such an event were to happen its hard to imagine that what is left is worth living for. Let us hope such things never happen.

I have, and several of his books that followed it. It does give one pause.

Although not about EMPs, my favorite for provoking thoughts along those lines - how society could fall apart in the face of a catastrophic global event - is Earth Abides by George Stewart. Some of the things he suggested in that book - given when it was written - are, IMHO, quite eerie.

In a similar vein, read The Camp of the Saints, Jean Raspail. Written in the 70's, its about unchecked illegal immigration into Europe, and the world now is pretty well predicted in this tale.

Somewhere down the line perhaps. I just looked on Amazon: hard cover? $975. Paperback? $399.99. I just bought ten pounds of powder yesterday, that I have notified my financial planner about. I suspect that she will be less thrilled about the purchase than I was. :p

I found a copy for about $12, I remember seeing those outlandish prices. Odd that the copy I have has no ISBN, or publish dates or anything else, just a book, paperback.
I just looked on bookfinder.com and the cheapest one there was about $80 which is still too much. I must have found the last $12 copy in existence!

I listen to books while I walk or work out. Libby (part of the library system) has it as an audio book for free. Just download the app.

My ‘69 is finally in reassembly. I have to admit, as an engineer, the utility of an older vehicle in an EMP event had not escaped me. If any of you guys store fuel for such eventualities, make sure it is properly stabilized and you’ve minimized oxygen exposure (full tanks). Gasoline polymerizes at an alarming rate. Something lost on the writers of mad max!

Just watched the Blamer in Chief lose his mind on tv, blaming everyone but himself for the border crisis. An unbelievable display of worthlessness.
Hard to believe anyone would actually consider voting for this world class lying A hole once, let alone twice!

most if not all politicians lie, some like biden just do it way more often and he really lacks any skill at doing said lieing.

A brief interlude to laugh (assuming the link works) amidst the stuff that drives us nuts and occasionally divides us. I know this isn't really Greta Thunberg stuff, but I kept picturing her. :p

Uhhhhh… top secret, classified black ops stuff eh. I supposed that’s why you know all about it but no one else does. :)
I didn't say I know all or anything about it.
But at least I know what I don't know unlike you.

an incredibly sad truth..

one of the things I find most incredible about Biden is his ability to lie so woefully poorly... and to surround himself with people that also lie outrageously poorly.. and still have a significant number of people not only vote for him.. but to vehemently support him..

I mean he has literally been called to the carpet over and over and over again since his very first campaign for federal office.. long before rapid information transfer via the internet was available for not just telling little while lies or telling lies of omission.. but for telling bold lies about the simplest of things (like where he placed in his class in law school)..

and yet here we are.. 51 years after he first took a federal office.. still being lied to.. still catching him in very bold and clear lies as a matter of routine... knowing it will never change..

and his party continues to back him and make excuses..

zero integrity.. and zero shame..

Just finished reviewing the Border Security Bill up for Congress. Wow! Total cost is a little over $115 billion, which includes $60 billion to continue the war with Russia. This would amount to $315 million dollars a day (for the entire package) if it were for the entire year.....but there will likely be more funding bills before 12 months. Saving democracy or funding a socialist regime, however you see it, it will be expensive......................FWB

It's a drop in the bucket compared to what it might cost if Russia wins.

I don't understand how this would kill billions? Would people in cities go feral without power for a period of 2-3 months? Yes. Would rural people live off the land a bit, roughly approximating the lifestyle of the great depression for a quarter? Yes. Would those with valuable skills become priceless resources while do-nothing jobs become immediately worthless and long-term strongly depreciated. Yes.

All critical broken technology would be repaired in 6 months and all non-essential technology would be repaired or replaced in 3-5 years. Shortages would feel similar to Covid, but we'd have immediate deregulation to move goods and services to the point of need with zero bureaucracy.
Exception of people in hospitals that may perish due to lack of lifesaving resources, and the inability to pump water to arrest fires, I don't see so much downside in a global values correction?

Everything the global population presently values will become worthless. Neighbors, Family, Faith, and Self-Reliance will become a cornerstone of all societies all at once. I suspect gender pro-nouns and only-fans will quickly go out of fashion!
In short, those billions would die around the World slowly due to virtually ALL electrical grids being fried and NO WAY to repair them. I've read where it takes about six months to manufacture ONE transformer as an example. Hard to do when they factory that makes them has no electricity and can't get parts from China because the cargo ships are idled for lack of diesel due to the refineries around the World lacking electricity. And that's before they figure a way to use carrier pigeons to communicate that "Sorry, your parts aren't coming". And before that Wall Street and other financial markets around the World collapse with no electricity and thus no communication (no AH and Good Gun Deals), no operating ATMs, banks, gas stations, transportation of food and goods, well pumps, water from city systems, natural gas, cell phones, etc. They all run on electric power through now disabled electrical grids. I'll take a quick(er) death by Halley's Comet any day. LOL

A very small drop. Look how much the Cold War cost the West. Now, put that in today's dollars.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
