Plains Game Ammo

New to ELD-X as some came with the purchase of a 7x64 the load data provided gets sub moa so I’m suitably impressed.

I have not tried these on game but I read somewhere that they don’t perform so well.

I’m keen to try them on Fallow and I think they will be fine on pigs judging by your photo

Hope you like your fallow pre minced.

Yeah.maybe I should downgrade from 7x64. Might be a bit much on them.

I guess where I was going with that is I have hear mixed results on ELD-x even though they are intended for use on game. The same has been said about SST’s

I have no reservations about using them on Fallow but I’m wondering how they would fair on bigger pigs.

Joking aside, caliber and bullet selection is important when going after medium size game. In another post, I posted a pic of a Kudu I shot using an ELD-X 180 gr and its left side was hamburger. The animal was DRT, but a lot of meat was "Brunswick stew meat". I shot a Blesbok at 400 yds with a .25-06 213gr Nosler partition bullet and there was very little meat destruction. This might be an apples to oranges comparison, but small caliber, straight shooting calibers with some oomph behind for me, appeared to be "more better"

The 300WM ELD-X destroys a lot of meat going through the animal. I shot a Kudu with a 300 WM 178gr bullet and look at the results shown in the picture. Just imagine the damage done on the smaller plains game. Although we can't take any meat, the local folks live off these harvests. There are many appropriate and effective bullets that don't create a lot of meat damage. The scirocco is just one. Take the PH's advice as much as possible. They guide clients every day and have seen it all.
Was this a close range shot? The ELD-X expands dramatically at high impact velocities as its a pretty soft bullet. 178g out of a 300WM would be going pretty quick out of the muzzle.

That bullet is a redesigned match bullet and is really meant for more reliable expansion at slower impact velocities. While I personally don't like the bullet, if you're going to use it for closer range shots I'd really go heavy for caliber and more moderate speeds.

it was close range.....approx. 100 yds

The point I thought I was making, is that in hunting, the game can vary as do the shot opportunities. A different bullet for this type of shot would not have caused as much meat damage. I shot a Black Wildebeest at the same distance using a 180gr Norma Tipstrike, DRT with so much less meat damage. Internals were messed up big time, but not the meat. I need to improve my writing skills for sure:oops:

Yep, there you have it. I view this as part of a broader trend where companies in the sporting industry are selling products based on "hyped" features that are actually impediments to how the majority of end users will use the product. Lots of very soft LR focused bullets coming out now that blow up at ranges where most people are taking game.

They should work well mate. My son and I bot use SST and they are absolutely brilliant.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
