Opinions on the middle rifle

Is that 9.3×74 big enough to legally hunt DG with? I would assume so since the 9.3x62 is. I have seen a few doubles in that caliber in my price range. That might scratch the itch for a new rifle and a double all at the same time.

It would be legal wherever the 9.3x62 is.

Yeah I agree that is definitely a fact and a contributing factor but still I think alot of what is being said in regards to calibre choice with buffalo hunting is based around personal preference and opinions not just facts. Not that I have an issue with it, I have my personal preferences too and as I said I will always favour those preferences.
You are right about so much being personal opinion. For instance I am only now going after my second buff this year, I have no real experience to speak of but I have some. I have read all I can on the subject and spent many evenings around the fire with long tenured Ph’s and have listened to stories and opinions of many who live it. So in all things safari I try to add up everything I’ve learned and experienced.
thanks so much for your comments on this, good discussion.

I would really like to own one of the Nitro family. I want a 470 just because but the 450/400 seems like it would be fun to shoot and could be reasonably employed as a whitetail/black bear gun
I am getting .450-400 barrels for my Kgun. I probably should have listened to the advice of the pros who suggested this caliber in the beginning of my double search.

That also may be a viable option. I almost pulled the trigger on a ruger No. 1 in this caliber earlier this year.

Point of order. It all depends where you want to hunt. Some nations say “nothing less than .375H&H” in which case you’re SOL. Other countries, like Zimbabwe, give you a loophole by allowing a bullet as small as 9.3mm but they then apply a minimum joules of energy requirement. I’ll save you the conversion math, in Zimbabwe, the only 9.3mm that outputs enough energy is the 9.3x64mm Brenneke. The 9.3x62mm is lethargic by comparison.

Put another way, a 9.3x62mm is 95% as functional as a 375HH but legally speaking, it legally permits you to do nothing more than a .338 winchester can.

What about the 9.3x74 though. Larger case but I guess that doesn't always equate to more energy depending on the loading?

I think tou should go for the double rifle thats an itch that definitely needs scratching. I mean who doesn't want one.
Man I know. That is on the bucket list for sure. I will own one someday if I have to sell off most of the other stuff that I've got, which I may do.

9.3x74R is essentially the rimmed twin of the 9.3x62. Though it has 8% more case capacity, it made that way so it can be loaded to the lower pressures required in a double and yet match the 9.3x62.

@Red Leg is that correct? I had assumed 9.3x74r was simply a rimmed 9.3x64 brenneke at lower pressures.

is 9.3x74r ‘s closest relative the 9.3x62? Can you load 74r using a 62 die set and a different shell holder?

Well after some debating I have decided to rethink my Africa strategy. While I do love the 460, what I have always wanted was to hunt with a double. Therefore, I am about to post a few rifles in the classifieds and I think I will see if I can generate enough funds for a proper double rifle.
So as soon as I wrap up this little photo shoot in gonna start posting and hopefully I can gather enough of a base to add a little cash to it and get what I want.

The 62 was essentially created as a duplicate of the 74R which preceded it. The 74R had more case capacity to use a lower pressure loading. The rimless 62 could do that with a smaller case with the then as now ubiquitous 286 gr loading. In something like a No. 1, a reloader could probably take advantage of that extra case capacity. Classic 74R ballistics are a 286 gr bullet at 2400 fps or a bit less for 3500+ foot lbs. The 9.3x62 launches a 286 gr bullet at essentially the same velocity. They are for all practical purposes ballistic twins. The 9.3x64 is more powerful. It will achieve nearly 2600 fps with the same 286 gr bullet.

I don't reload, but I would be surprised if a cartridge with 8% greater capacity could be loaded with a smaller case die set.

I would decide on the specific rifle and caliber first. There are doubles and there are doubles, and prices reflect those differences.

Once I have acquired the funds I plan to do a lot of researching and talking to people who have a much greater knowledge base than myself on these rifles. If you wanted a high tech 338 lapua with the latest in long range glass and such I would be your guy but I'm gonna have to phone a friend on the four rifle business

But perhaps a sabatti if I can find a good one or maybe a used K gun if everything goes really well.

I thought the ballistics of the 450/400 and the 404 Jeffery were the same. With the 450/400 being used in a double rifle and the 404 Jeffery is a bolt action.
