No question for me after my last two weeks in Africa the 404J is my choice. Made two 300 yard shots no problem and all dropped on the spot. I will not be taking my 375 any more…just my 404J and DR

Dave, you need to have a 404 Jeffery as well, it will compliment your .500 Jeffery for sure...

I have a .416 Rigby and I would stick with that because it's fairly flat shooting in a scoped bolt action.


It seems that factory .404 has become available again from Hornady, but one needs to strike fast.

You have a couple of dozen to choose from and any thing over a 375 pr 9.3x62 qualifies..although imo so does the 375 and 9.3x62 if one can shoot, but that is only my opine.

450/400 Nitro Express 3” or 458 Lott, prolly the Lott first as it’s a bolt gun, 400 Jefferey is a great cartridge and has been used on it all and before the 375 H&H it did it all. Load the 458 with lighter bullets and it’ll do it all too.

I like to use the DG horsepower for regular sized game. It's decisive and I rarely have to track anything for any distance.

It's a soothing idea to use a .458. The projectiles are available and you can load them as heavy or light as you fancy. It's almost foolproof. Work up a few loads and you're good for everything.

Besides, once someone chose the 6.5 CM for dangerous game, everybody would want one. Preferably with an 18 or 20” barrel to avoid blowing the damn buffalo to pieces…

Powerful enough for anything that walks yet I can shoot it comfortably in an appropriate weight rifle when set up properly...even from the bench. Ammo is more available here in the U.S. than many of the good choices.

I want nothing less than that or a .404. Jeff. To me the answer cannot be anything less than a caliber that starts with a "4xx" I could probably go bigger (I am really curious about the .416 Wby but would need it custom built to get a CRF in that caliber) but I don't need to. And I know I can shoot my .416 Rem accurately and hit the bullseye every time at 100 yards
