For the 4457 it is best to call the Customs office and see how swamped they are and they will tell you when to come in. The form and inspection of serial numbers only takes a few minutes even with multiple items. When I did my first one I already had my serial numbers written down and they just verified them before they put them onto the 4457.
On the 4457 you should also list the scope on the rifle, any optics you are taking, camera gear, and anything else that has a serial number on it. The 4457 just proves that you had it before you left the country for when you come back in.
