My baby got a haircut

I have never had a need for supressor on a hunting rifle, or DG rifle.
But thats just me. If I take it to the range, I will use hearing protection. If I am hunting, I will manage without that.
I would prefer a rifle, or DG rifle to be of short-ish size, but without affecting original designed barrel length. I would prefer DG rifle to keep iron sights, for emergency situations in the bush, and with that to have scope QD mounts, and iron sights zeroed and tested on short range.
Attaching a suppressor on a rifle is personal choice, I have no issue with that, but having my already conservative views, this all brings me further away from the original idea of having iron sights, and standard lenght barrel fire arm.
So, not for me.

Having said that: most probably DG can be hunted with anything: bows, revolvers (possibly pistols), and suppressed rifles where legal. And with PHs back up gun, in condition 1, ready for
The nail in the coffin for me was my ph… he actually prefers clients shoot suppressed, even on dg. Good enough for me.

Do you have provisions for attaching a front sight or is the rear sight just holding until relieved? I thought about cutting mine to 16" and moving the sights back for the option to suppress when I wanted to. I felt like the .375 needs maximum velocity to maintain what it needs to be the effective and ranged killer. Maybe if it were a straight wall, but killing the velocity on the .375 is killing the magic.

My smith told me I can reattach the front sight if desired, I opted not to as I could never imagine running qd rings anyway. I’m told the shorter barrel will have a minimum effect on velocity… not sure about 16 inches though

It’s just common courtesy at some point… why the hell would I want to go deaf?
Where are you hunting this animal? Genuinely curious where a PH would offer that advice.

I would never hunt DG with a rifle without an open sight follow-up option. All of my scoped rifles for Africa (and most for everywhere else) use detachable telescopic sights and mounts. Several are Blaser, many are Talley, and several are claw. All work perfectly.

I will be in the eastern cape, on the coast. My ph will be backing me up with his 500 double.

Sooo remove the rear sight and give yourself a whole lot more options for scopes. QD rings are not to be feared. I literally had an entire range day where I did nothing but proof of concept firing with warne rings, two different scopes and iron sights. It was boring. The point of impact didn't shift. Neat thing is you can set the gun up for different bullets or ranges if you like.

The thing we fear to write is that suppressed has its advantages. You get more second chances. Plain and simple. Yes the gun still makes noise, but the overall disruption to the surrounding area is much less.

Say it ain't so and I'll say you don't know.

I just threw up in my mouth a little……just kidding, to each his own. Suppressors are here to stay and part of riflery,…just not for me on dg rifles

I’ll probably do that for my next trip to somewhere more remote.

This is exactly what my ph said!

Haha- I get it, trust me I was a purist but I ended up caving. I don’t love recoil, I’ve had some concussions in recent years

I have suppressors on three ARs. One is the ranch repel boarders MP4 and the other two or a 5.56 and .308 with thermals that I use on hogs and other vermin. They are also mounted on two different handguns. I understand their use and advantages very well.

As well as understanding the advantages of a suppressor, I also recognize their disadvantages. In this application, a suppressor not only seems a little silly, it can also be a real disadvantage where fast accurate use of a rifle in very close cover is more likely than almost any other hunt.

I assumed the OP must have been planning his DG hunt on a South African game ranch. I hasten to add, there is nothing wrong with such a hunt. I hunted one of my buffalo in the Limpopo. But, it is typically a different experience than hunting the herds and loners in other environments. I can not imagine trying to deal with such a lengthy rifle in those conditions, and though PH's in places like Zim, the Caprivi, Moz and Tanzania would be happy to try to guide a client with such a rig for a buffalo or tusker, I can not imagine any in my acquaintance recommending one.

But of course it is badass which I assume must count for a great deal. I am glad that his PH is happy with it.

I'm glad you like your suppressed Model 70 but it's not for me. I like classic guns and rifles and wouldn't think of doing that to a rifle. I know the suppressors have some positive attributes but I enjoyed learning to handle the recoil of my 416 and did not find it terribly loud while hunting. I also believe in good iron sights and detachable scopes. When I approached my Buffalo the scope was off my rifle. I'm certain that my way of thinking is going away but I don't care. Hell, I shoot clays with a British hammergun.

I bought a Dead Air Primal from Silencer Central at the recent SCI convention and its beautiful. This particular can has interchangeable caps for the big calibers. I will use if on my .300wm, .375H&H, and my 9.3x62. Right now, Silencer Central is offering free tax stamps with a purchase from them. From the time I purchased mine till the time I had mine in hand was six weeks-AND they offer military/first responder discounts.

I’m sure suppressors are great on many rifles for different purposes. But I just can’t bring myself to shorten barrels on my handful of larger bore rifles. My two 20” barreled Rugers are already threaded so I might try one on those someday.

Your can is nothing more than a sound modulator. The buffalo I shot have all been within 50 yards. Just take careful aim because they will turn and charge soooo fast.
