Murder

Take to walking with a walking stick Ray. I do now that there has been a couple of knife attacks with one in my local city. solid rimu with heavy walled brass ferrul under the knob and on the foot (with rubber insert for grip) and weighs in at 1lb 6 oz /600gm with balance point 4 inches ahead of the top brass ferrul. Wow!!

Cairns Central Shopping Center is right in downtown Cairns
A murder in daylight involving people who are/were unknown to each other.
I cannot fathom that because I heard them arguing and who carries a knife into a shopping Center???
Police have gone very quiet about it.
I carry at least one knife and usually have two handguns on me everywhere I go! Big difference between paranoia and preparedness. I carry because there are people out there that will slash your throat over an argument and I’m to damn old now to knife fight with enthusiasm.

Yep, no reason to bring a knife to a knife fight. My Glock 27 or 29 (depending on my outfit for the day. Ha! Ha!) are my answers to that situation!

depending on the weather, a glock md 22 in .40 or colt 1911 in .45. when warm a S&W md 60 in 38 spl or a S&W 3913 in 9mm. but always armed. for use old guys a five year CCW is very cheap, i guess they know we can,t run very fast.

Back when I was at university, I'd walk down off campus to get a pizza most Friday nights. I'd take a similar stick with me just in case, although I doubt mine was as sturdy as that one looks to be. If I could've carried a sword-cane I would've done, but of course I couldn't have one of those on campus. I have since acquired a fine blackthorn stick should I ever need one.

+1. Right on Leslie!

For up close and personal you might want to consider a stun gun. I carry a Talon 18 megavolt stunner and flashlight combination. It fits nicely in my pocket.

I have carried a buck 110 every day of my life since I was 16. It’s for using not for defense. I don’t really carry anything for defense, I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. Violent crime is not an issue here.
Violent crime isn't an issue where Dr Ray lives either? Yet? We don't have much here either. Except for the occasional carjacking, convenience store robbery, drive by gang related shooting, etc. Here, as in many other cities across the country, it's not so much you are the target as much as your caught in the situation at hand. In my hand, will be something of the perpetrator(s) nightmare, if I or another innocent bystander becomes the focus of their violence.

Get a collapsible baton. They are only about six inches when collapsed in their belt holster, but extend 18-20" when extended. I take mine when walking around the neighborhood to keep viscous loose dogs or kids at bay. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Ah well NOW I can carry a swordcane all I want since I'm long out of uni. Or a pistol because, y'know, convenience. Hell, when my favorite cousin got married a couple years back, I went in full Scots formal wear with a claymore over my shoulder and dirk on my belt. I only had to make do with a stick since I was living on campus.

Baton's not a bad idea, though, but thankfully I have neither vicious dogs nor vicious kids around here. Raccoons, though... Might need a spear for those adorable little bastards.
