Murder

On the first question - lots of states do not require a waiting period to buy a firearm. I've never had to put up with a waiting period and (anti-gun laws in general) was one reason I turned down a transfer to California years ago. Our state governments do have some serious powers, however - not always a bad thing with the libs often in control of the federal part of our government.

On the post office delivery thing - the assassination of a president with a mail order rifle had a far reaching effect on that score.
I’d gladly put up with a wait period in exchange for the assassination Of a prime minister.

I have a question as why do Americans have to wait to take possession of a gun, and use FFL and such. I n Canada I can buy a gun and the post office delivers it to my door. Granted we don't get cool guns like the Americans, but if.we own a gun already we don't have to wait to get another.

Just seems silly

In Australia after the Port Arthur massacre we have to police approval to buy any firearm.
What I don’t understand is for example if I have say a 308 and want say a 30/06 I have to apply.
I’m waiting for approval to buy the Kimber 84M in 308.
I argument is that I already have numerous bolt action rifles so why all of this bureaucratic rubbish??
Just another method of suppressing us. I’m also waiting for my handgun licence. State government apparently said to the police to take 5 months so we lose interest etc.
Never use to have this bureaucratic rubbish except for handguns. Basically no handguns/concealed weapons allowed except for pastoral people etc.
The tough new gun laws (for law biding citizens ) introducer after the Port Arthur killings meant we had to have a licence, a good reason to own firearms (such as joining a gun club).
Semi autos were banned a big buy back scheme was undertaken.
I believe that in New Zealand where the government “confiscated” semi autos that the result was about 5% were handed in.
The NZ government says something like 95%. Hmmm!!
I guess New Zealanders watched what happened here in Australia. The thin edge of the edge story.
In is approximately 463,000 semi autos and pump action shotguns were handed in. I know a ships captain who said he personally carried from Hong Kong 1.1 million SkS/Ks.
Do some calculations here!
Now I’m not against some sensible regulations but this is ridiculous. The “antis” always point to the USA and the gun statistics and mass shootings!

Buy back is just plain shit. The government never owned the guns to start with so how can they buy them back.

There is a somewhat strict ownership requirements here , but once you own a rifle or shotgun it makes no sense to have to wait for another. That is just stupid. What's next a ten day waiting period if you need some cartridges to go hunting?

It is just going to get worse. More and more of these left wing socialist style governments getting elected all over the world sticking their noses in where they don't belong.

I have taken some time off work after some natives decided to try and steal a mobile fuel tank and ransack my machine in the bush. I drove up while it was happening, three of them, armed , piled into their truck and tried to ram my pick up. I managed to get a partial plate number in side view mirror.

5:30 pm, daylight. They weren't scared . I have been shook up ever since.

I was armed, I always am in the woods due to the bears, wolves .

I think what upsets me the most is what could have happened, and the problems my family would have if I did what I thought should be done.

The rcmp were helpful, but because they are natives, even if they are arrested it is catch and release.

Hopefully the week off eases some of my tension. It hasn't been pleasant.

Dr Ray,
Yes, the whole point regarding background checks, licensing, etc., whether your country, ours or anyone else's country, is the criminals don't comply. They steal or get their weapons through the black market or other means. Actually, in countries with strict gun laws where the law abiding citizens are unarmed, criminals don't need firearms and do use knives/sharp weapons to commit robberies, home invasions, murders, etc., with little fear of anyone fighting back. If/when they do get caught, the courts don't incarcerate them for the many years in prison necessary to protect the citizenry, especially from the career criminals. The police agencies are really good at solving crimes and catching criminals AFTER the fact. But, no matter where one lives, there are not enough law enforcement personnel to protect one from being robbed, kidnapped, raped, murdered, etc. The defense of ourselves and families from violent crime is all up to the law abiding individual. Countries that deny this to their citizenry are complicit with the criminal element in my opinion.

Almost all murders in Australia are from knife wounds. In fact in excess of 85%
I didn’t see the murder but I was very close and heard the arguing.

In New Zealand we go through a a series of checks where background is checked and there is ( or supposed to be) interview with spouse or partner if married etc or other close family member and a non related referee. This is a 10 year licence but used to be lifetime, and allows for the buying with no delay or number limit for any rimfire, shotgun or rifle within A category (being both bolt and most semi auto with mag limit
. B is pistol and there is the pistol club reccomendation to go along with other checks but again no waiting or limit on numbers.
C is collector and the firearms can not be taken out of the house for shooting purposes.
D is dealer and
E is for military styles semi auto

And the victims I'm guessing were mostly unarmed with anything that could have saved their lives? I read somewhere awhile back, where the murder rate in London with knives/sharp instruments was VERY HIGH. I want to say the article stated it was as high or higher than New York City, but I can't remember for certain.

Well, other than maybe the extended time for the background check (including interviews), that isn't nearly as bad as it could be with regards to private ownership of firearms, as long as the process is an objective one without undue bias towards the applicant?

Yeah right (unbiased)

Yep, that's the kicker! The "non related referee"? He's usually a cricket referee, but does this on the side. If the applicant likes the team he doesn't, the only thing he'll get approved for is a 6.5 Creedmoor AFTER proof of growing a manbun! Ha! Ha! Ha!

The referee is one that you nominate and has to be able to testify to your good character.

Only criminals can go about armed

Khans knife crime is almost the same as lightfoots gun crime.

I’m glad you didn’t see the murder.

The laws here relating to firearms are about embuggerance. They hope to make things hard enough that people just give up and do something else.

Some do, but many go to the effort just to say; “F#&@ ‘em”.

You know Ray, it’s been a few years since I lived in the town, but I don’t remember feeling unsafe anywhere other than Bentley Park and even then it was more about being a bit lost.

Mind you I never went to any backpacker haunts - deliberately….

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
