As the title says, I'm running for the NRA Board of Directors and I need your help to get on the ballot. I know a lot of members here are also members of the NRA.

I have been a critic of the grifting and corruption at the NRA as well as a critic of the refusal of some Board members to acknowledge their part in allowing it to happen by looking the other way. If you have read my blog, No Lawyers - Only Guns and Money, you know where I'm coming from. My reporting of events at the NRA has even made it into the trial of the NRA in New York which was a shock to me.

I had long thought I could do more to help reform the NRA being on the outside looking in. My viewpoint has changed. After discussing it with my wife, I have decided to run for the Board of Directors. While my name has been submitted to the Nominating Committee as one of the reform candidates, I'm not going to hold my breath that I will be nominated by them.

I can still be on the ballot by petition and that is the alternative that I am following. I need to gather 398 valid signatures from voting members and submit them by October 8th. Voting members are either NRA Life Members of whatever level or Annual Members with 5-years of continuous, unbroken membership.

My petition can be downloaded from here.

If you are a voting member, please consider signing my petition. My goal in running as a reform candidate is to see the NRA returned to its former glory. By that I mean training thousand of new shooters monthly, working with hunters to protect our sport from animal rights activists, and strongly advocating for the Second Amendment on both Capitol Hill and in the state legislatures.

To get my mailing address, either send a private message to me here or use the email in the link with the petition.

I want to thank Jerome for granting me permission to put this request up here on AH.

When I get onto a computer I'll download the petition and see about a few other members who are Life Members + to do it also.

This is the best news I have heard about the NRA in along time. I truly hope that you have some success and start some real change from the inside.
That said, I let my membership go many years ago for all the apparent reasons… BUT if it looks like there is the potential for some real reorganizing of establishment priorities I could easily be persuaded into joining again….

I will print it out and have wife, son, daughter, son-in-law, and myself sign it and get it back to you.

PM sent your way...

I wish you well. Sorry I can't help. I gave up on that outfit a long, long time ago when it started peddling bogus cancer insurance. The hole has been dug pretty deep for a long time. Good people were blinded by the 2nd Amendment.

G'day John

Good luck with your efforts. Irrespective of its faults, American firearm owners need an effective NRA. This will be even more the case should Harris win the US Presidency. She and her followers have made no attempt to hide their intentions re guns.

On that note, have you consulted with lawyers on how to protect you and your family's assets etc. Better to have things in place before you need them rather than afterwards because I'm sure a Harris Administration will aggressively come after all involved in leadership roles among the firearms community.

That's an excellent point. We recently redid our wills, POA, and HCPOA. We had a long discussion about setting up a trust. We may end up having to do that. I let my CFP(tm) lapse last year since I was retired.

I'm an NRA Instructor for 3 disciplines, and have been a member for 31 consecutive years.

I'm having trouble downloading anything.

PM me and I will give you anything you need.

The NRA needs to regain complete dominance in American 2nd amendment issues.

The last 10 years needs to be completely erased!

John:

Please take some time to consolidate your point of view re: reform. There are a lot of who I’ll euphemistically refer to as “the old guard” who aren’t going to take an hour and a half to comb through a blog to ascertain what your version of “restoring the NRA to former glory” means.
I’m a hunter and a competitive shooter and if you and I spent 20 minutes together I’m sure we’d agree on very much on this matter, but if you want to carry the day you’ve got to sharpen your communication plan for this campaign.
Please feel free to DM and discuss.

An Update:

I am on the ballot for the 2025 Board election. I was nominated by the Nominating Committee. Perhaps no on is more shocked by that than me given my criticism of the Board and NRA leadership has been, shall we shall, rather vehement.

Through a mutual friend I heard that former NRA president Marion Hammer thought I was only nominated to shut me up. Another person suggested that it was to show the judge in the NYAG's trial of the NRA that the NRA has changed as they just nominated one of their biggest critics. A story from my blog did make the trial and there was an attempt to enter it in evidence.

Regardless, I will still be running by petition as I wish to be "double nominated". In addition, there are another 14 reform candidates who did not get nominated by the committee including former NRA President Jim Porter and former SCI President Paul Babaz. I will have their petitions up on my blog this weekend.

They can also be found on NRA In Danger.

I am from Europe, and out of this game, but I wish you success in your initiative!

I have been a Life member of the NRA since 2000. A Benefactor member since 2010. I applaud your throwing your hat into the ring instead of just withdrawing support and complaining. I will download the petition later today.

I have bought NRA memberships for two people in England and one in Belgium. It can be done. -----The woman from Belgium would read her "American Rifleman" magazine, share it with her Dad and Uncle, then rip the address off and mix it in with the waiting room magazines where she worked. :D

I was thinking about this option for a American Rifleman magazine. But now, a friend from USA sends me the magazine
BTW, in UK there is NRA UK (established few years before American organization), but obviously today with less social influence then NRA USA.
Regardless of magazine, to have a voting rights in this case one needs to be member for at least 5 years.

I thought you were commenting you couldn't be an NRA member. My mistake. Cheers!

Let me correct that slightly. To be a voting member you have to be either a) a life member of whatever level or b) an annual member for at least five consecutive years without any break. All members are eligible to vote for the 76th Director if they are attending the Annual Meeting which this year will be in Atlanta.

I will admit my wife and I gave it a lot of thought. Initially, I thought I could do more for reform from the outside but came to the conclusion that one had to be on the Board of Directors to effect real and meaningful change.
