If I Owned A Double Rifle

Gents:
For my taste, many of the rifles here are too modern and gaudy. Artistic, yes, but too much ornamentation. How about this fine 12-bore double from about 1870 by Whistler? 26-inch barrels, fully rifled for a round ball. Weighs about 11 1/2 pounds, and very accurate with 5 drams of FFg GOEX or 40 grains of Blue Dot.

How do I get them larger? Not sure what's the process.

Thank you.
I will post this rifle in the for sale section in a day or two now that I can do the larger pics.
Again, thanks.
Cal

Now, I can't fine the edit button. I need to correct some typos.
Cal
round ball, not sound ball
ornamentation, not orientation

The edit feature is on my above posts and this one, but not the original. Is this because you worked on the pics?

I love old doubles with Damascus barrels. One day, I hope to own one...

Shortly I will put the 12-bore (above) for sale here. If you are interested you can email me at <pappas@mtaonline.net> and give me your phone and we can chat. It is for sale now. I'm flexible and time payments are fine.
The old doubles are wonderful. I shoot all of my doubles every week--.350 up to 4-bore.
Cheers,
Cal

Thank you. You are a gentleman.

There you go, calling people names again!! But a serious question. Do you know as much about Damascus barrel shotguns as you do rifles?

A little. What can I help you with? I've been shooting Damascus rifles and shotguns for 25+ years. I love the look and pattern of the iron and steel mix.

Hi Cal, I am at work now. Will send you a couple of questions tonight. I'm about 10 hours ahead of you!

@cal pappas I will be shopping for a English Boxlock double in either 12 or 20 in about another 5 weeks. Even though I will be primarily be looking for 2 1/2 in. chamber gun from the 20s or 30s, I may could be interested in an older Damascus gun. If I were to buy such a gun designed for black powder, where would I buy ammo for it. RST has plenty of 2 in and 2 1/2 in shells, but not black powder that I am aware. Is there a substitute available on factory loaded rounds? (I don't reload) And #2, I would want to use this gun to hunt dove for sure and hopefully quail and pheasant. Is this practical or even possible. I would not want to buy it just to hang it on the wall.

Anyone on the forum is welcome to answer. I just thought Cal would have the most knowledge on the Damascus barrel guns. Until joining this forum 3 years ago, I thought all of the Damascus guns were just to look at now. Didn't know people still hunted with them!!!

@sierraone Would have to buy from a custom shop to get loaded ammo if you don't handload. I have a couple 1880's time frame 12 ga 2 1/2 in shotguns that I hunt with on a regular basis for doves. I mainly use smokless loads that keep a 1 oz load at the same pressure parameters of the black powder. But a big cloud of white smoke of the black is just so much fun. I also had a 500BPE double that had damascus barrels, it got traded for another double. Shooting older BP area double rifle or shotgun will be a chore if you don't reload. If you choose to go the fine old double route there are several on the fourm that can help you.

So the 1 oz 2 1/2 inch loads from RST would work for the birds and be safe for the guns?

Will have to look and see what pressures those loads are loaded to. I have always handloaded my own and kept the pressures below 7Kpsi for shotgun shells in a pre 1898 shotgun. Let me check with my records tomorrow and get back with you. I will also check on the RST loads.

I appreciate that since I am considering buying a Damascus gun in London in about six weeks. But if I do, I want to be able to use it and not just look at it!

@sierraone Was able to find some info on the RST loads and they are loaded below 7Kpsi according to the article from this URL
http://www.shotgunsportsmagazine.com/archive/nov14/story1114.html

Reccommend reading the complete article. and you can decide if you wish to shoot your old shotguns and rifles loaded to spec. I also recommend taking each shotgun and place it in a test fixture. I cobbled mine from some 2x6's. attach a LONG string to each trigger and shoot several pairs of shots before you shoot it in your hands.
