I agree. One of the things I get nostalgic about is the mood. When you are in a specific geographical area to do this dance of the hunting lifestyle. Guns food sunrise sunset the animals the colors and sounds and smells of Africa whiskey perhaps a woman brought along. For most of us today it's a just a small proportion of our lives in a 2 week vacation that's planned and paid for months or even years in advance. Where people of the past lived it everyday or 100 years ago could go for months at a time. It's something I think most of us dream about and what makes us so nostalgic for those timesthanks for sharing all these nostalgic photos @D.M.V! Reading and hearing about those days are part of what got me interested in hunting in Africa. I will say that certain modern luxuries are appreciated though, like a nice lodge and a comfortable bed to fall asleep on after a long day of hunting!
Except for the Malaria, Blackwater, Trypanosomiasis and the million other ways Africa could kill you back in those days... I whole-heartedly agree... However.... 200 years from now, people will probably be looking back at us and wishing they had lived in a "Simpler Time"... or should things go the other direction, "The age of Light" as so many dark age scholars wrote of the civilization of the Roman Empire from the dank, candlelit interior of their windowless, 7th Century stone monastery. Those were the good old days, but I have to be thankful that Africa is still open to the hunters of my day! It may not be so in 100 years.I agree. One of the things I get nostalgic about is the mood.
