Hornady CX

I kinda wonder how those would do on Buffalo. I know that the conventional wisdom is 300Grain bullets...but the monometals are large for weight anyway and the increased velocity should make up for it, penetration wise. I think that bullet would equal a 300 grain lead core and should be good for buff.
I think you’re probably correct as monometals penetrate above their weightclass. I would like to see some evidence that the CX bullet is as well constructed as BARNES however. I wouldn’t be the first to try it out on a buffalo. I choose 300gr Barnes softs/solids for my upcoming trip to Zimbabwe. it’s hard to not take something so proven.

Buffalo Bore makes an interesting 270gr monometal flat point option too.

I'd want to try it out first up close on something like a 500 lb cow elk, or plains game of same size or larger and hopefully recover the bullet. I'm thinking cow elk because where I hunt sometimes you can put the Big Sneak on and get within buffalo range.

What animals did you take? and which did you recover the bullets from? Have had very good luck with the GMX bullets, wondering if the CX is the updated form of the GMX.

Signed in. I’m wondering if there a little softer Barnes ttsx? Might open up a little better at lower velocity’s.
I know I'm late answering your post and you probably know by now, just in case, Barnes LRX bullets have a higher ballistic coefficient than the TTSX. The LRX doesn't require the same velocity to expand and it extends your hunting range by about a couple of hundred yards. They tend to lose petals if they hit a target at high speed but penetrate every bit as well as the TSX and TTSX.

That’s good info. Thanks!

I took an Impala, Eland, Wildebeest and Gemsbok. and yes I think it is a updated GMX, as I've used them too with the same results.

I've been on two hunts where they were used last year. They don't expand as much as TSX was what I noticed.

If you hit bond with these bullets exit holes are large. Here a warthog with a 375 @ 855m/s

I used them in my 30-06, 180 grain. I thought they performed great on Sable and Gemsbok. My 375 did not like the 250 grain outfitter CX so I went back to 300 grain barnes.

I loaded the GMX in my 375 Dakota. Wanted to shoot up to 400 yards. They really did well on the plains game I hunted. Would definitely recommend. Have not tried the new CX bullets but it’s sounds like they would perform similar.

Apologizing in advance for the poor picture quality.

The bullet at the top is a 338 win mag Hornady 225 CX taken out of a gemsbok shot at 150 yards. The middle one is a 338 win mag 185 grain Barnes TTSX taken out of an aoudad at about the same distance. The one with no pedals is a 300 win mag 180 grain Hornady TTSX and I can't remember what I shot with it.

The CX and TTSX both expanded well with maybe the TTSX a little more. The 185 TTSX is a hand load and it was screaming so that may be why. The TTSX is redish in color and the CX more yellow, maybe that tells something about the alloy.

I have taken 8 African animals with the 185 grain 338 TTSX, 9 with the 180 TTSX 300 win mag, 2 with a 180 grain TTSX in 30-06, and 2 with the 225 grain CX along with a bison, and a very large black bear. All were one shot kills except for a blue wildebeest I shot with the 30-06 that I had to shoot four times due to a flubbed first shot. None exited and the bullet was usually under the skin on the far side.

The 185 grain Barnes TTSX hand load is my favorite.

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA
