Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but does anyone know much about Montana rifles? I think they are closed, but re-opened under a new name maybe. Reason i ask is because i am looking at a Model 1999 Pro-Hunter in 505Gibbs. Asking price is $2300 U.S. I know there were lot's of complaints regarding QC and wonder if i may be getting myself into problems if it needs work or parts. I would like to handle it, but it's a few thousand miles away, so a bit of a gamble. Any questions i can ask the seller about this particular rifle?
Any info is appreciated.

Earle, you are right, Montana rifles went out of business a few years back and is now back in production with new management. I have a Montana model 1999 made by the original company and I’m very happy with it. I think it was a good value for the money. The action is a slightly modified model 70. A bit different bolt release button. Trigger is almost identical to the original model 70 trigger. The action is investment casted like the Ruger guns. When I originally received it it was a little rough, and I mean just a little, and seems to have smoothed out with use. From what I’ve seen the new company is making a slightly modified version of the 1999. I think the gun you’re looking at was built by the original company. I really don’t think you can go wrong with it. You could check with the new company and see if they honor the warranty on that gun, but I highly doubt it. That said, anything wrong with that gun could be easily corrected by a competent gunsmith.

Seems like a deal on a 505 Gibbs if it functions and feeds well.

That would be the big question. Taxes and shipping bring the total to +/- $3800cdn. Just have to decide whether i want to toss the dice or not.

Whoa! @rookhawk .. if you care to elaborate, always appreciated.
Smithson is one of the finest custom makers in America. He takes on very few clients. He is most famous for double square bridge rifles with integrated, invisible mounts and his custom rings. (the gun referenced doesn't have his most famous feature)

So then it comes down to "what's it worth?".

It would probably cost $27,000 to get on the list and have the gun made new, no doubt about that. But first-buyer "bespoke experience" isn't a transferrable aspect of a gun's value.

It's a mid-grade custom 500 Jeff by a very reputable custom maker, with a full-retail max max pricetag as a second hand piece.

For every 1000 buyers that recognize Jeffery, Holland, Boss, Purdey, and Westley, one might know who Smithson is. Therefore, future collectibility is restricted to a very, very small collector world.

Just out of curiosity, would something like $16-18k (less or more??) be more realistic for a secondhand price? Just a rough guess based on quality components and a consideration for name/quality of work

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
